We Love Baby Skunks

Today our baby skunks "graduated" from their dog crate den. They now enjoy a more spacious play area inside Harmony's neonate building. They will stay inside just a bit longer, then move into an outdoor pre-release enclosure. We love watching them play and wrestle - every animal has a unique, hilarious personality.

  • I used to do skunk rescue and I raised 8 baby skunks in my one bedroom apartment one year. All but one were returned to the wild. The last one just loved humans too much, and ended up as an education animal which visited schools to teach kids about wildlife. They are awesome animals.

    • @@NeoCreo1 oh Jeez I know they wouldn't remove their scent glands if they're being rehabbed 🙄 obviously that'd be a death sentence for the skunk... I thought Ronald's comment was about raising them as pets, and if that's what he really means, then yes, their scent glands would be removed. If not, then rehabbers keep their distance when raising baby animals to later release in the wild so they don't imprint on humans

    • @@gildedpeahen876This was a great question and I just looked it up. There are a couple of common stripe patterns and so it's just a genetic luck of the draw which one a skunk will get (in fact, skunks bred to be pets are often selectively bred to produce different stripe markings than their wild counterparts). There's no difference in coloration between males and females.

I kept watching, as a mother skunk walked out of the bushes with 6 babies behind her. They were adorable! Mum and babies had their tails held high as they walked. The last 3 got scared and rushed back to the bushes while mum and the first 3 walked a few hundred feet to another wooded area. Then mum came rushing back for the timid 3. It was sweet watching them! I spoke softly to them the entire time to let mum know I was there, and not a threat to her family. I was a lovely moment that I will probably never again experience.

  • These little babies are adorable. I noticed they each have different patterns on their coats. If a skunk is not startled or threatened they won't spray. My husband caught one in a catchum alive trap on our back porch. We weren't sure how to release it without getting sprayed. I called a vet and he said get a long pole and run it throught the handle of the trap and GENTLY carry it to where we wanted to release it. We used the long pole to lift the latch on the trap, again GENTLY, and opened the trap. The little critter calmly walked out and looked at us as if to say "Thank you". He didn't seem to be the least bit upset being in the trap. It may have been that there was some cat food that he really seemed to be enjoying. If that had not worked I was going to go after the vet (a good friend) with a can of fart spray.😂😂😂 Be safe everyone and enjoy some of the beautiful wildlife.

  • The smell of skunk, like on a country road, is one thing - I don't mind it actually - but point blank is another thing entirely. Two quick stories: when we lived in the city, unbeknownst to us, a skunk was wandering across our gated driveway early one morning. Our German Shepherds startled it when we let them out. Got the dogs of course, and the front of my truck (it looks like chewing tobacco spit). Drifted down the vents of mine and my neighbor's clothes dryers and were we in for a rude surprise next time we used our dryers! It took special descenting stuff that a coworker used for hunting to get the smell off the truck. Next time was after we moved to a place next to woods and fields. In 25 years there's been only one skunk incident but my dog, Phil, got it right in the face. It was later in the evening and nothing to do but run to the grocery for cans and cans of tomato juice until we could get to an open pet shop in the morning. He was a very long coat German Shepherd and he stunk, especially when it rained, for months after that. But the point blank smell is something one wouldn't even recognize, like burning wire insulation. It's truly dreadful. 😷

    • @@meganbella8262 That’s what was nice about them. As soon as they are weaned, they all go off on their own. I just got to observe them in their young, playful stage, and then they all left except for the momma. She had another litter this spring, but she moved out with this batch of babies. I liked having them around, without having it be a problem.
