The execution of Lisa Montgomery - BBC News

2021 ж. 13 Ақп.
971 404 Рет қаралды

Lisa Montgomery was the first woman to be executed by the federal government in America for nearly 70 years.
The 52-year-old strangled pregnant 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, before cutting out and kidnapping her baby in Missouri in 2004. The child survived and was returned to Stinnett's family.
Her lawyers argued that she had been born brain-damaged and was too mentally ill to be executed. Family members say that as a child she was routinely sexually and physically abused by her father, and trafficked by her mother.

    • According to some articles written at the time of her execution, the brother of her father, Zeb, who brought her up after Bobbie Jo's murder (and I guess, technically her brief abduction) said she's doing well and Zeb was raising her well. He also said that she found closure in her execution in 2020, when I guess she would've been 15 or 16. I don't get why when adoption (and from birth) is an option, Lisa Montgomery ever chose to go the incredibly horrific route she did. I also just don't understand, in the first place, how you could possibly do that not just to another human being, but then to their child, while somehow deluding yourself that you can ever be its loving or caring mother after having done so. It's mind boggling, truly.

    • I think every one agrees the murder was horrible. However, it's been shown over and over that the threat of the death penalty does not reduce murder rates. Unless someone is hoping for death by cop, most murderers, most prisoners even, think they will get away with it. The penalty doesn't matter because they aren't planning to get caught. And, in fact, there is a 30 - 40% chance that a murderer will remain free, because so many go unsolved. All the death penalty does is affirm that killing is ok if you have a good enough reason and the power to do it, it does not lead to a more peaceful society.

It makes sense to me. Monkey see, monkey do. Do you honestly think that Lisa Montgomery had any chance whatsoever to be normal? Or to live a normal life? Hell no! But that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have to take responsibility for what she did and be sentenced for it. • This story seems so complex. I personally have a friend who suffered horrendous abuse as a child, suffered similar atrocities as this woman did, yet he has gone on to be an upstanding member of society, he cares for people, protects people, and makes sure his abusers don't win, by allowing himself not to fall off the rails. So easily he could have, and excuses could have been made from his childhood experiences, but he didn't. He did the opposite. An example that abuse that may have happened in the past, doesn't define you as the person you are now.

  • I see this video as an eye opener on what a traumatic childhood experience can do to a person, yes I have seen people become stronger land successful later on in life but most became scarred for life and others even turned killers like this one. Parents and elders should mold the mind of a child as God wants it and if parents fail then the government should take care of the child making sure his or everything is fine, and if the government fails then the church and NGO's should take over. It is complex but we should make sure that every child should have a bright future and a good upbringing.

    • Excellent, intelligent post. Hurt people, hurt people. And Lisa's evil mother and every man she brought into her life and allowed to abuse her, created a hurt and broken adult. How about instead of killing criminals, the wealthy USA tries investing money in prevention? Like making sure children are removed from abusive homes, and given the loving care they need in their formative years? An ounce of prevention is worth more than a ton of cure! There's no doubt Lisa was a very damaged adult, to have been capable of such an horrific crime. And motive is all - she killed a pregnant woman, to steal her baby. It was as crazy as it was barbaric, for she would never get away with raising that child as her own. How can anyone say she was of sound mind?

  • You can’t use sexual abuse as a get out jail free card. As an adult you have to find another way to,for lack of a better word, excise your demons. Besides how does a bad childhood have anything to do with cutting open a woman’s womb and remove her child? I’m sorry she suffered but there is no rationalizing this crime.
