Listons Jab was a standout even from his excellence in ringcraft and his legendary intimidating physical presence. Ali might’ve sounded off like the famous braggart we all know, but he would be the first to admit that Listons boxing skill was seriously underrated, and he prepared like a demon so that he could keep out of trouble, put on a show and live upto his claim. Even Louis, Dempsey, Tunney who were watching this in the spectator stands said it was practically staged. Ali basically tapped him and he pretended like he was KO'd. Then Ali gave it all away with what Angelo Dundee told that Ali had said "Get up and fight you bum, nobody's going to belive this"- indicating that playing knocked out would be seen quickly as matchfixing by even the public much less the boxing pundits, commentators, proteges and ex - boxers.

  • Although I think Ali would have won regardless with his superior athleticism. It is hard to believe that this fight was not fixed. Everyone that managed Sonny Liston was directly involved with the mafia so if anybody would have the motive to throw a fight it would be him. Ali was never known as a first round finisher and Liston at the time was considered the toughest man on the planet so the odds of Ali finishing him in the first round would have to be at least 50-1 odds. I think Listons corner knew he won’t have a chance and made him take a dive with the first clean punch he took knowing they would make far more money. Boxers did not get paid a lot back then so Liston probably could have made far more money taking the dive than even winning the fight. You throw in the fact it was the most controversial punch in history with a questionable roll by Liston it is a no brainer for me. I do believe the first fight was legitimate but this was fixed

    • Look at the punch Ali threw @1:34. Former Heavyweight Champ James J. Braddock, said "I have a feeling that this guy (Ali) is a lot better than any of us gave him credit for," Braddock said. "It isn't the knockout punch that sticks in my mind as much as a punch he let go (earlier). ... It was a right to Liston's jaw and it shook him to his shoetops. For all we know, it could have been the one that set up the knockout” That punch at 1:34 is what Braddock was talking about, a hard right hand that hurt Liston. Ali planted his foot and threw his entire body into it. Liston’s thighs look rubber to me right after the punch landed. The knockout blow came at 2:10, 36 seconds later. It “…had so much force it lifted Liston's left foot, upon which most of his weight was resting, well off the canvas.' - sportswriter Tex Maule. Liston never saw the punch - it hit him in the temple and he walked into it.

His wife said in the documentar"the champion nobody wanted" that liston hated his rep and wished he could give the AA community a better look and clay much like patterson was loved a good bit of whites and blacks, she also said he wanted to get out of the public spotlight so many belive liston was gonna take the pay earned from this fight and become a small time fighter to soon retire.

    • It was called that on purpose *(as a novelty - Like Cooney was the great white hope) because Liston was inline between the punch & the camera......regardless of timing and all that...any punch with good timing is a good punch....it's the camera angle....had it been a profile shot, you would've seen it clearer. That's hot Steven Seagal looks good doing kick toward shorter guys.

    • People actually think its a phantom punch? One can clearly see his neck and head jiggle as the punch lands. As Conor McGregor said, "Precision beats power, and timing beats speed". Its all about landing the perfect punch at the perfect spot with just enough force to shut the lights out.

    • @@Xavier_the_Boxing_Nerd ,that's just the point he didn't knock him out when it was far easier to do that than keep fighting and hitting him shouting whats my name. all the experts from howard cosel to jimmy the greek agree that ali should have put Terrell out of his misery by knocking him out but instead ali mercilessly punished Terrell relentlessly all the time shouting WHATS MY NAME WHATS MY NAME. there is a clip on youtube where ali and Terrell are interviewed by Cosell and during the interview Terrell insists on calling him cassius clay and ali vowed in the interview that he was going to punish Terrell in the ring. which is actually a prediction that ali kept to thus showing the prowess of ali over all the heavyweights at that time. As for me for the record I agree with everything ali did that night even if it wasn't sportsman like. Terrell was nothing but an uncle tom he deserved to be punished even if it wasn't the right thing to do.

To the naysayers saying that the fight was fixed, imagine seeing a prime Ali saying his prayer and starts dancing.. Liston knew he was gonna get his ass kicked.. Ali said himself that liston was a harder puncher, had a better jab, and a better defense than a prime George Foreman.. This man was a very special and extraordinary athlete and a complete pugilist specialist.. Gave us ultimate spectacles of boxing ability for our entertainment and suffered with parkinsons syndrome until hos death at 74..
