Bringing Old Chess Pieces Back To Life and Making Extra Queens

A client who I'd made a chess board for a couple of years ago sent me some chess pieces and asked me if I could refinish them and also make two extra queens. In this video I show how I brought the pieces back to life and turned two new queens on my lathe.

  • My lady thinks chess piece vids are like the most boring vids ever but I enjoyed this. Man that vintage Lardy set… those knights speak to me and it warms my heart

  • I have my father's old chess set that I may try this on. Maybe then I could pass it down to my son. As always, thanks for the inspiration.

  • I have watched almost all of your chessboard-making videos. I think it would be nice to try to add magnets in pieces and the middle of squares. This means - they would self-centering on each move xD

  • Like others have said, beautiful work. It was great watching you turn those queens. That takes some real skill.

  • Hello Mike, really enjoyed your chess set 'restoration' & watching you hand craft those two additional Queen pieces ... You made that skilled work look so straightforward and easy; however, I know there is much more to making handmade pieces than meets the eye ... One wrong move & the chisel can destroy a piece in a split second 😬 ... Superb craftsmanship by you, as always ... Wishing you & your family a very happy Christmas. 👍

    • I know what you mean about one wrong move. I didn't have any problems with these two queens, but I started making an entire set a few weeks ago, and I had a few incidents with a skew chisel that destroyed a few pieces. I'm worried about running out of wood, so I'll need to slow down! Thanks for watching, and happy holidays!

  • I saw a chess board on a woodworking forum where the board's squares were concave and the pieces bottoms were round and weighted. Is this something you "wood make"? Or consider making? Thanks for your content

  • I wonder if goo gone would have helped remove the remnants of the old felt from those chess pieces since you were having so much trouble removing it lol

  • Why did you place epoxy in the chess pieces? Amazing finished product.

    • That's to secure the lead weights so that they don't rattle.

  • I'm not impressed. You should have removed the coating with paint remover then very lightly sanding. Because the way the deeper corners turned out makes it look like it's a shade. Not professionally done, sorry.
