  • Thank you Adam and greetings from Finland! I´ve studied Welsh for 21 days now😄 Mainly Duolingo-based but it´s very good to hear something different, for example gardening things. I visited Wales (Snowdonia) first time 1998 and since then there has been a special Draig-place in my heart. Probably because my lovely wife is 5% Welsh. Planning to come back to Eryri next July. Take care Adam a hwyl fawr!

  • Adam, you have a talent for linguistics. I'm struggling to roll my rrrrrrrr's due to the fact that the muscles in my tongue have not been used to make that particular manoeuvre but I'm persevering! Iv'e only just stumbled onto your channel and I think you're doing a great job! I fancy you may be a school teacher, you are so adept.

    @oceanwanderer8065@oceanwanderer8065 Жыл бұрын
    • Maybe you've already learnt that, but if someone is still out there learning, try these tips: - say words with r, but replace the r's with d (because that's about where your tongue should be) - say many d's very fast, dddddddd - in fact when saying r your tongue isn't pushing as hard against the palate(?) as in d, but lighter, because you have to be able to push some air between them, the sound happens in the very front of your mouth, so you don't blow air like in Welsh ll or ch or such, but only very little to get the tongue's tip moving a bit - then you can try to imitate an old car or something starting with d, drn drn drn or add a very short vowel for example dren dren or d'rn - try words that start with dr, like drown I think they use at least some of these in speaking therapy here in Finland if a child can't say rolling r, but personally I find r more difficult to say with d, but again it's probably because of the location of the tongue why they use it. So when the tongue is in the right place try many other words, too. You might find them easier to say. It may be easier at first if you open your mouth widely in horizontal way, but not vertical (sorry, not sure how to describe that in English), little bit as if you were grinning like this 😬 Hope that helps. Hwyl fawr!

  • That was great Adam, so much better than Duolingo which I am also using to learn Welsh. Your explanations of the trickier "ch" sound was really helpful and I shall be practicing my motorbike noises for "dd" for the rest of the evening :-) Fascinating to learn that so many plant names in Welsh come from the Latin. Look forward to the next video. I've made lots of notes! Why in Welsh is a word sometimes starting with "c" and other times with "g"? compost and gompost for example.

    @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading3 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you Stephanie that's the ultimate compliment! haha I hope you kept your motorbike within national speed limits whilst practicing! Yes, definitely there are so many similarities. Thank you :) That's a really interesting and good point about the C changing to a g it's down to a grammatical rule that's called 'mutation' whereby we change consonants of words depending on the prepositions before them so the words am, ar, at, gan, tros, trwy, wrth, dan, heb, hyd, o, i, all trigger a soft mutation whereby c becomes g, t becomes d and p becomes b. But don't worry about that yet :) we will explain it all moving forward, think of the words for now :)

  • This is absolutely brilliant, thank you. I'm a Welsh woman who learnt it very poorly in school, and then after picking up more at University have lived in England for many years. I was following you gardening Instagram because I miss hearing Welsh (and love gardening) this is even better. (I love being able to see whether I can understand what you're saying before looking at the subtitles.)

  • Interesting!! I found some or a lot of similarity with romanian language... :) *Shwmae? = Ce mai e? / Cum mai e* "Ce mai e?" or "Cum mai e?" is used in Romanian as *How are you?*, *How are you doing?* or "What's new?" *Ti - Tu* *Dw = Eu* *i = și* *Weld = Vezi* *Tyfu = Tufa* But "Tufă" means bush in Romanian. *Ffa = Fasole* *Garddio = Grădinărit, Grădină*
