Alfonso's mother did not approve of Victoria Eugenie because the Battenbergs were seen as "not quite Royal enough". This was the same view held by the German and Imperial Courts. Henry of Battenberg (Ena's father) was seen as the son of a morganatic marriage (father was a Prince, mother was a Countess).
