For the record, Ali's actions are taboo even from the viewpoint of most other Iranians. Legally speaking, there are strict laws prohibiting direct contact between men and women who are unmarried (can result in fines or imprisonment), and dishonoring women (at least the Iranian government's definition of this) is a crime that you can be arrested for. And the younger generations of Iranians are more invested in Iranian feminism; the strict and radical conservatism of the current Iranian government has never been universally popular among its citizens. The counter-culture and anti-government movements in Iran are huge. I think the fact that Ali is also willing to suckerpunch is proof that he was being a jerk. This was genuine disrespect. I do not see other Iranians supporting his actions.

Can't paint all of Islam with such a broad brush. There's a stark difference between the Shia and the Sunni. The Shia which is the majority in Iran are pretty liberal in their thinking, setting aside much of the dogma that the Sunni cling to. It can get pretty complicated at times because even though the two denominations are at odds over some issues, at the end of the day they both support a total domination of western culture.
