  • Be careful using that Derek. If that’s a fixed PTO adapter you really need an overrunning clutch. These are famous for people pushing in the clutch to stop and the momentum of the mower spinning keeps driving the tractor since the PTO is driven off the rear end. Lots of 8n Fords went over the hill cuz they were mowing with a rotary mower and no overrunning clutch.

    @slowride55@slowride552 жыл бұрын
    • Rotary mowers have 50 pound blades with a “stump jumper” that also weighs a metric crap ton this has blades that don’t weigh 10 lbs put together. Not saying your wrong because you are not but this mower is not considered a rotary mower

There is nothing better than doing things as a family. You just don't realize this while it is happening, but they are memories that come back to you as you get older, and you miss them and start wishing that you could have the "old times" back. The kids grow up too fast. They are very lucky to have a father and mother who care so much about them and does everything in their power to bring them up right and makes memories like this. It was about the size of a Ford 8N - about 20 hp IIRC. I never used it it heavy stuff - that's more brush hog work. It did a wonderful job on my yard. No lack of power. Note - I put a bass boat kill switch on the tractor - spliced into a coil wire (neg I think) - it's been a long time. The switch had a lanyard that I could hook to my belt. I wanted the kill switch in the event I got pulled off the tractor by a tree limb - or something. I was in a desolate area and this was before cell phones. tractors have governors - being dragged off and into the PTO would be a bad ending.

There was 85 acres left of it. Barns full of old goodies and equipment plus a three story log house with a huge hand built fireplace using rocks tilled from the soil. The 2 acre lake was really cool but the humidity and the harsh winters made us walk away. I see you on your farm and wonder sometimes if we made a mistake. The farm is still in her family but after we turned them down one of her cousins bought it just recently. It is located about 20 miles away from Carmi Illinois. Right along the Wabash river near Kentucky & Indiana. Great video Derek. Spending time with your kids is great.

Kind of brings a fella back to his old man stopping on a deserted farm road ( now engulfed by suburbia) almost 50 years ago and telling his kid sitting in the shotgun seat to slide on over and give him his first taste behind the wheel of a beat up 64 Ford pick em up.

  • We used to bail 100 lb two string hay bales. The Baylor wasn't quite as good as they are today. We would go out in the field and pick up scraps of hay that the Baylor didn't pick up and And also pick up the The bails that broke as they came out. As always I was a little kid so I was giving the job of driving the truck. If you were too young to do hard work you do usually got to drive things. We had a bunch of half ton Chevy fleet trucks. I remember I was so young and small I couldn't sit on the seat and work the steering wheel and work the brake and everything so I just stood up behind the steering wheel. Then we started hauling hay. We had these old hay wagons that would hook on to the draw bar on the tractor. Then the front axle of the trailer would turn. Then you Hook another trailer on the back of the first one with a linchpin. And then the front axle on that also turned. So you had to haywagons with four pivot points and you drive them down the highway without tying them down this was about seven or eight. Then I was about 11 or 12 and they threw me in a two-ton truck we used to haul potatoes or one of the two tons we used to hall grain or sugar beets. The only training I got was there's first second third fourth and 5th, there's your high low it's a 10-speed, don't screw up and break the axle or wreck the truck. I got into one of the trucks one day and turned the key couldn't get anything to happen couldn't get anything to happen. The hired hand came over and said what the hell's a problem. I said this truck won't start. And he said is the key on. I said yeah. Said you see that knob on the floor down there. I said yeah. He said step on it and the engine ordered to life. Floor board start around the 1952 Chevrolet. And this is how it went on and on and on. We were given responsibility that I wouldn't give to kids these days for all the money in the world. But they treated us like men too. We had old chunks of slough Small River running through our ranch. When I was 12 and I got my hunting license my dad handed me an old Sears and roebuck both action shotgun and a saddle scabbard for the motorcycle I just saved up for and a case of 16 gauge. He said have fun hunting. I could take my motorcycle or the truck or my horse anything. But he said if you screw up and do something stupid you lose your privileges. I work you like a man so I'll treat you like a man and tell you give me reason not to. I got my driver's license when I was 14. In Idaho you can get your driver's license then. My birthday was right on the cutoff date to put kids in kindergarten and my mom held me back a year so me and Mark Clark were the only 8th graders with driver's licenses. We had a parking lot at my junior high where we had 8th and 9th grade. Good times I had a carload of girls after school everyday. 73 Plymouth duster painted this horrible green color. It had three on the floor. Fast car. In high school half the guys with pickups would show up with guns in their gun rack in their back window. Most everybody had some kind of deer rifle, a shotgun, and a 22 and for pests like rats, porcupines that would get into our cattle and so forth. Everybody had guns in their truck so that right after school we could all jump in our rigs and go hunting. Nothing bad happened. Nobody ever got shot. Nobody ever got hurt. They work just like men and treated us like men.

  • I had a “beaver” 3 cylinder diesel tractor with a pull behind finish mower and it worked awesome. A good project for this channel would be to find and rebuild a “Gilson” industrial/commercial 18 hp hydrostatic tractor. It’s just the size of a big riding mower but it’s got a hydraulic pump under the seat. It’s hydrostatic drive. It’s got a pto shaft out the back of it. The one I had was a I believe late 80’s model. It had a rear mount pto drive rototiller with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive mowing deck with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive snow blower with hydraulic lift. And it had a 48 inch push blade with hydraulic lift. It had a 18hp horizontal shaft Briggs n Stratton. It had 75 pound rear wheel weights and tire chains. I have never ever seen another one like it here in Maine. I ended up loosing the motor ( valve guides) and sold the attachments. I kept the tractor and I plan on making a wood splitter with the hydraulic pump. So anyways if you could ever find one in decent shape they are definitely worth looking at. As always WORK SAFE 😎😎🇺🇸🇺🇸
