Pull start rope gets ripped out of hand

When your pull starter on a OHV small engine gets ripped out of you hand from high compression it could be a 15min. fix. The high compression is caused by the exhaust valve being out of spec. which in turn wont allow your automatic compression release (ACR) to function as it should.
I appreciate your teaching tutorial here. I have the exact same engine and exact same problem. Lucky I'm a bachelor because it's all apart in my kitchen. Next to my Kobalt electric lawn mower. I knew I would run into the solution if I just kept looking and turns out I saved this video in my watch later list about a month ago. So here's a shout out to you my man and guys clear out that watch later list once in awhile. You may have already stumbled over the solution and didn't know it.

Thanks for showing this, I own a bunton walk behind mower with a kawasaki 14hp engine. It caused a couple of my fingers to swell up because of the grip I put on it. I concluded the 14hp engine is stronger than my hand! I will check this ASAP. BTW You were very clear and straight to the point! I thought there would be a gasket on the valve cover, but apparently not.

Thank you! I have the same problem & thought that might be the cause. Now I can pursue the repair with confidence it will fix the problem. Mine violently ripped the pull cord from my hand & snaps the handle off. Having to fix the recoil starter several times was frustrating. This was the first time I encountered this problem. I have fixed many broken keys on lawnmowers but this is on a compressor. I was a little puzzled at first! After pondering the problem for a while the only possible cause must be the valves. Another peculiar symptom was the engine after sitting a while between use wouldn't start unless I removed the air filter & put my hand over the intake then it fired right up choke wasn't enough. I'm curious if this will fix that also.

I mostly see the Honda units with the cracked exhaust rockers. That engine there was built like a tank. Honda might be quiet but they do not hold up as well. The valve covers warp when removing them. You eather have to beat them back into shape or replace them. Guys get carried away using gasket sealer thinking more is better. It makes a mess and I charge more when I have to clean it up. A new cover would be better and cheaper.

Good video, I was showing to a friend because he was skeptical about valve adjustment. He did not wanted to accept my point of how many times someone threw away an engine of this because of this problem. And it pull your hand awful

My starter cable broke in my hand and now my knuckles are bloody. Popped the valve cover oped and sure enough the exhaust was super loose thanks for the help

My generator engine which is 6.5hp there is very hard to pull a kick or try to start it looks kick is stuck so what is problem??

my predator 212 started doing this after installing a mikuni carb hopefully this fixes it

You can take spark plug out put a long shaft screw driver in the whole then rotate engine and watch the screwdriver go up and down. Up is top dead center
Did you also check flywheel key for damage? That's normally the issue.
Not on that type of unit. Lawn mowers are prone for that. Honda engines experience the dreaded cracked exhaust rocker 99% of the time. I have seen snow blowers blow the flywheel key because of water in the tank, the owner sprays ether into the engine,causing back fire and anti- rotation due to pre-ignition. I have repaired many snow blowers with that problem. I always ask the owner if they used ether to start the engine. 99% of the time its a yes.

how about a stihl ms440 chain saw, sometimes its fine, sometimes, it is really hard to pull, when theres no spark plug turns fine
Some chain saws have a compression release button , but not sure if they would have an acr on a two stroke

2 strokes don't have valves, only release compression valves
My predator kicks out your hand after i changer the valve spings to 18LB's with stock springs it never did that??
u may need to get heavier duty pushrods, because the stock ones would flex and therefore, the compression release would barely work, or not work at all.
Same her ei did 18 lbs springs. Re adjust your valve lash to correct lash. And make sure your flywheel key is still intact and flywheel is lined up with crank. If still not fixed take the crank case off and make sure the cam and crank are lined up for proper timing.

Is the valve size the same for every small engines?
If you mean the valve clearance. I wouldn't know all manufacturers specs. But using .004 in. As a general spec. Is what I've always used
J La ok I have a old go cart from the 90s and every time I pull it, it yanks back and hurts. I’m thinking this is the problem how about you
Not helpful at all. Brand new cam new rockers new lifters adjustmet on lash yet works 2 or 3 times then starts kicking back again so no this has not explained anything other than lash adjustment
If the spring is broke or any part of the A.C.R. which is attached to the cam gear shaft, then you will get high compression pull back.
