My cvt transmission just went out with my Honda Insight 2010 but it does have 440,000 miles so safe to say Honda cvt is great 👍🏻
You did great.
Thank you! But it hurt to see my beautiful car break down for the first time 😐

How often did you change the fluid?
Literally just bought a 2016 Altima with a CVT in it 5 days ago. And NOW I’m seeing this video. I hate my life.
I bought my Grand son a 2018 Altima, a few weeks ago now I'm hearing this,I'm asking for mercy on this car
Sell it quick while you can. It will become a pain in tha neck if you dont get rid of it. I had one
I bought a 2014 Nissan Versa and the transmission at 77,000 is now completely ruined and needs a new one The dealership is charging me $5,000 to fix it bc I am out of the warranty And if I fix it at an outside mechanic, the best price I found was $3,000 I am now in the market for a new car & am never buying a Nissan again But I’m glad yours was covered, I wish mine was, ive only had that car for 5 yrs 😩 Worst car EVER!!!! ...I would take RMs advice and get rid of it Look at my situation, I am barely seeing this now, $3000-$5000 in the trash
I sell new Nissans and I'm well aware of the CVT. It's a transmission fluid temperature reader that's not keeping the the fluid cool. Make sure you service it at the dealership so the technicians monitor it. The CVT wears out when the customer isn't aware that the temperature gauge has overheated and the transmission begins to wear out. It's avoided by not reving your engine in gear unnecessarily. Don't push the car to pass people aggressively. Service with the dealership and get a diagnostic every oil change. Diagnosis are free. What Scotty doesn't mention about the CVT are the benefits. CVTs save gas milage is the best yes but they also shift extremely smoothly. The ride in a Nissan is much more comfortable than any other Japanese car because of the CVT and the noise cancellation interior makes for less road and engine noise to. Nissan's push for innovative technology for a superior ride and they release new saftey and convenience technology before the other Japanese manufacturers. Stick with your Nissan, take car of it and service it well. Just like any other car!
Plato's Ninja yea, you sound like one of those a**holes who sold me a 🍋
Why is everybody so obsessed with gas mileage these days? Personally I say reliability and better performance over 3 more mpg.
Those all go hand in hand nowadays that's why.
Aytug Demir because in Europe, as an example, fuel is realy expensive... thats my reason🤷🏻♂️
Probably because gas was so expensive about 10 years ago.
i know its not your saving 7k on gas a year
In Iceland gasoline at normal gas stations (without discounts) is about $1.92 per litre and diesel $1.86, and at those special discount gas stations, gasoline can be as low as $1.63 and diesel $1.58 per litre, it's a little lower at costco with gasoline being $1.58 and diesel $1.54

Matthew S I feel you mate, had my Murano’s CVT replaced at 100.000 km. Engine also had a 4000$ issue. Get rid of this Nissan while you can and get a Mazda 6 - drives so much better.
You should still have warranty.
@@anon4041 I do but that doesn't give me a piece of mind knowing the cvt can go out at anytime..
@@scottsuem3384 The CVT doesn't just go out at anytime. There has to be wear and tear on it or mechanical failure. You also get warranty on the replacement too. CVT transmissions actually last a long time, but you need to do proper maintenance on it. A lot of people don't bother changing the fluid ever lol. Be happy you still have warranty too, as many people don't. I don't think it is the CVT itself that is the issue, it is the company that supplied it. Which is probably why Nissan still uses CTV. If you are that concerned, sell the vehicle.
Matthew S get a lemon law lawyer and get all your money back, thats what I did
Had a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder with a CVT had no issues with it but I sold it as I watched too many CVT failure videos (and I was out of warranty) and bought a Mitsubishi with a regular torque converter unit. More peace of mind now. Scotty loves his Toyotas.

@@Network126 delete the comment to not get hurt for it when you go to court for the accident lol 😆
VW/Audi does DCT very well, and they are wet clutch systems whereas Ford is dry clutch system. I knew about this, so I looked high and low and found the 5spd manual 2015 Focus. My last 2003 Focus 5spd manual lasted 166,000 miles on the original clutch and it was still going strong. Changed the fluid a few times and everything was peachy.
A few years a friend of me rented a Focus from Enterprise. That transmission was awful. It never shifted properly when going into a higher gear. Amazing how these auto engineers go to college and study engineering but cannot develop a transmission that shifts smoothly. This is not rocket science and they are not developing warp drive. Makes me wonder what they are really studying in college because it is not engineering . Nissan could probably care less about the CVT "problem". They will place the fault on the owner. Besides most lease the vehicle & after three years they do not have to bother with the CVT going south because it will end up being someone else's problem.
Dude I love your channel. Entertaining and accurate. Keep up the good work Scotty.

I enjoy watching your channel. It helps me increase the knowledge I learned from my Father about the basics of car repair and maintenance.
I have a 2011 Nissan Sentra with the CVT. So far, I've put 155k on it with no issues at all. I do stay on top of preventative maintenance as I put 100+ miles a day on it. And I get 33 mpg.
Good for you. You got a good one.
Sam LaQuey mine is a trash can and i only have 60k miles. Plus you must not drive your car very hard because i only get 24 mpg on average.
The cvt works for conservative driving. You can notice the engine should not be driven so fast for a transmission allowing the motor to remain constant at certain rpms to get too speed. I have a sentra and I too get around 33 to 35 mpg.
Sam LaQuey my theory is that it depends where your car was made. If most of the cars Scotty works on are made in Mexico then yeah it won’t be as good.
@@evan8tor21 mine was made in Mexico
I think the belt is the "weakest link" for a lot of the CVTs out there. When that belt blows, it's a mess of shrapnel inside the transmission. Toyota doesn't use a belt to achieve CVT in their Prius: it's all done by varying RPMs in MG1, MG2, and the ICE. Cool stuff.
Hey Scott just wanted to say thank you for your help and videos. You have saved me a tons a money. One more thing if you got haters , than your probably doing something right.
Scotty i was about to buy a 2019 subaru wrx with the cvt and it was already in the subaru shop for warranty work on the trans. I got a 2018 acura tlx a-spec instead and i love it. So glad i saw this video lol
Just got a notice from Subaru Canada the they are Extending my CVT warranty for my 2018 Outback to 10 years. Feel better now 😃
Beware because Subaru will fight honoring that warranty. I'm dealing with my CVT transmission stalling and causing my front axle to break. Horrible experience on an LA freeway. I'm dealing with Subaru not honoring two active warranties on my car. It's a nightmare.
I'd rather have a tranny that works right than one that breaks all the time but is covered by a warranty. Think of the hours of time you'll waste dealing with towing, scheduling the work, waiting for it to be done, hoping it's done right, getting a ride to the dealership....on and on and on.
thanks for info. my 2015 Sentra, 85k, slipping.
Yeah, good luck with that one.. warranty is only valid by their definition of the fault, and they only announced that because the word is out how crap the cvt's are, and sales were plummeting as a result.. any claims you make will be severely challenged.. guaranteed
Our Subaru Impreza sucks . They rebuilt the engine twice and now the transmission is failing at 85000 miles and we're having problems with the cam .. Hate Subaru !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the funniest and best video about CVT! I'll subscribe! So, AFAIK, CVT (or a version of CVT) is a Nissan Patent. The Patent ended a 1 or 2 years ago. Thanks, Mr. Kilmer!
I wish I would have started watching this guys videos my 2010 Altima 171k transmission torque converter through a failing code RIP
94 olds ciera s 3100 v6 bought with 21k miles 3 yrs ago, now 61k miles still going strong. Love old cars they're the best.
The achilles heel for all CVTs is torque. The first CVT used in a passenger vehicle sold in the U.S. was the 1987-1994 Subaru Justy. But the Justy weighed just under 2,000 lbs and had a 1.2L engine cranking out a modest 73hp and 71ft/lbs of torque. As a result, the CVT in the Justy had no significant service issues, as I recall. I think the reason Toyota and Honda CVTs last longer (so far) is because they're offered mostly in Toyota/Honda's smaller FWD vehicles, where the engines don't have much torque, or in their hybrids, wherein electric motors bypass the CVT when moving the vehicle from a dead stop, thus eliminating the vast amount of torque strain that CVTs in larger non-hybrid and/or AWD vehicles experience. This relief greatly extends the life of the CVT. When CVTs are connected to larger vehicles with more powerful engines and/or AWD systems like the Nissan Rogue or almost any Subaru, the CVTs can't handle the constant torque load, so the belt/chains in them strip and can't grab the variable shafts and pulleys anymore, rendering the transmission useless. That is why, for the indefinite future, I can't see myself buying any non-hybrid vehicle with a CVT, especially since I live in a mountainous area, which is hard on any transmission anyway.
As someone who had a 2014 Honda Insight [hybrid], i had zero transmission issues up to 154k miles as the second owner. Thanks for your 'insight', pun intended. Reducing the the load on the CVT is logically a good idea
Thank you, Scotty!
Bro , I love the enthusiasm with the arms in every video !! 🤜💥🤛✌️✌️✌️✌️
75k on my 2016 Altima SR ...almost all highway and I'm a maintenance nut but so far so good. Thanks to Scotty's warning I did buy the 100k power train warranty just in case ...but I enjoy driving that car. Fingers crossed 🤞
I've got a Jatco CVT in my Suzuki Kizashi. It has run flawlessly for 100K miles now. It is the nicest transmission I've ever had in a car. Silent, smooth, drama free. I was apprehensive at first with the CVT but have gotten great service from the Jatco in my ride.
My 2009 Nissan Sentra has 130,000 miles on it and I love the CVT. I'd gladly buy another Nissan with a Jatco CVT. I have three neighbors that have owned a number of Nissan vehicles with CVTs. None of them ever had issues. People I know at work have Nissan cars with CVTs. None of them ever had issues. I don't understand why Scotty says their not recommended.

According to Wikipedia, Subaru has discontinued the use of Jatco transmissions and are building their own CVT’s
Yeah, they are, but they're still horrible.
@crookback Great idea, my 2011 subaru cvt went out @ 114k.
@crookback - Electric cars have a one-speed "transmission" - a reduction gearbox. So far I haven't heard of any of them giving trouble. After over a century of making reduction gearboxes, perhaps the engineer-bean counter war has been won in favor of the engineers. If the gears and bearings outlast the rest of the car, and the gear case doesn't fracture, maybe they are good at last? Bean Counter: "Can't the gear case be made of recycled beer cans? We could save 6¢ per unit." Engineer: "If you want warranty claims on broken gear cases, OK." Bean Counter: "Just so it lasts more than 5 years and 60,000 miles."
Hey Scotty you prob already know this but found this: For the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Toyota created an all new CVT with a "launch gear" or a physical 1st gear from a conventional automatic transmission alongside the CVT pulley. From 0-25 mph the transmission would stay in this launch gear to aid in acceleration from a stop and improve durability of the CVT. After 25 mph, the transmission would switch over to the CVT pulley.
Just bought this car. Good to know!

For what I've seen, the best optimal case scenario for a cvt's life is something around 200k miles, I'm sticking with normal geared transmission.

Nissan first adopted the Continuously Variable Transmission globally in 1992, and have gone through constant development, enhancement, and improvement ever since. The first major application of the XTRONIC CVT in the U.S. marketplace was the 2003 Nissan Murano.

Random trivia: In 1993, F1 team Williams tested a CVT on their car. It was later banned by the FIA, even so far as to make a rule requiring to have a transmission with between 4-7 gears. It was rumored that the car had lapped a few seconds faster than normal.
Race cars have FA to do with the garbage sold on the street.
Dear Scooty, what do you think is more convenient? an used honda with cvt? or an used jetta with triptronic? Thanks for all your videos, im learning a lot with them!
I believe Subaru makes their own Lineartronic CVTs. Subaru did use a Jatco 3 speed automatic, and their 4 speed automatic was based on a Jatco design as was the 5EAT.
Incorrect. Jatco makes all Subaru CVT's for Subaru.
Subaru does make its own CVT.
Subaru motor vehicles have used manual, conventional automatic, and continuously variable (CVT) transmissions. Subaru manufactures its own manual and CVT transmissions (for non-Kei cars). Since the 1970s, all Subaru conventional automatic transmissions have been Jatco designs adapted to Subaru specifications. Thats from Google
Scotty. THANK YOU! I purchased a used 2004 Infiniti and was wondering about the durability of the transmission (no problem yet). But watching this video, I know how that you considered the 2004 Infiniti bulletproof, vs the later CVT cars. Also was thinking about buying a new Accord, good to know you've not have any issues with that one either.
And honestly, if you're going to get a new Accord, might as well spring for the Sport package with the 10-speed auto. Geared transmissions are just quicker, even when CVTs get reliability issues out in of the way. And, subjectively, it's a lot more fun to drive in a shifting vehicle, vs a "smooth shifter"
My old Mazda 6 had an Aisin 6-speed auto. It was great.
Got the new Civic, came with a CVT system. Not a bad transmission in my book, Honda and Toyota seem to be the only brands that make well-built CVTs nowadays. I’m happy with my car, and I haven’t had any problems so far, and that’s good enough for me.
You saved me thousands, I was about to buy a Nissan until I saw this video!!! I feel like I owe you a favor!!!

Honda CVT transmission with paddle shifters are quite impressive
The problem with the transmission is the cooling and the oil change interval. The Nissan cvt runs very hot and without proper cooling will have a reduced lifespan. If you install a transmission cooler and change you oil regularly it will last much longer.
I'm glad I watched this. I've been looking at Nissan Sentras but now I'm not.
You got to realize the secret to getting longevity out of a CVT transmission is to change the fluid. Our first CVT we owned was in a 2008 Nissan Rogue. I myself changed the fluid every 40,000 miles .. when we got rid of the car at a hundred and forty thousand the cvt was perfect... a friend of mine bought the vehicle from us and he kept up exactly what I was doing changing the fluid every 40,000 miles. And the last time I talked to him he said that he has almost 200,000 on the CVT with no issues at all. We also have a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 85000 and I have done the same for that vehicle. Change the fluid every 40.000 miles I do it myself it is a simple drain and fill
This not possible. Nissan is junk. 😂

They have a cvt also
From what I've read, the biggest fault of the JATCO CVTs is that the metal belt shares the same oil with the gears, so when it goes, it takes half the transmission with it. I have to wonder why JATCO didn't aim to make this belt-chain-thing separately replaceable without the removal of the tranny; it could have had a removable link, like a bicycle chain, so it could be replaced from the bottom for $300, instead of necessitating a $6,000 transmission replacement.
CVT in my 2012 jeep compass went to crap with low mileage-ditched it for a Honda!
most new hondas are using cvt now
This dude rocks. Thank you!
So my mom convinced me to get a small or midsized car as a first car, something I can afford. I saw that there were cheap used Nissans that were pretty brand new, from 2013-2018 that were under or above $10,000 and the Sentra caught my attention, but I was always so curious on why a newer used model of a Nissan was being sold for that price range. Now ik why it is at that price range. Looks like I'm staying in the Honda Family

There is a Jatco CVT in my mother's Dodge Caliber with 130,000 miles its been trouble free so far.
LMAO @ "a leg up" picture.. ha ha.. Thanks for the video, Scotty. I was moments away from buying an Altima with a CVT. Guess I'll just keep looking.. Thanks..
Hey Scotty I am a seasoned mechanic and the only problem is that I've had with CVT transmission is when somebody tows heavy trailers and motorhomes etc. and really puts them to the test if these transmissions are driven normally and serviced well I think they are very good transmissions and the designers have done a very good job
I know a few people who've had CVTs die at incredibly low miles, who drove them very easy, and never revved them or towed anything. CVT are garbage.
@@fireblazer6661 I know people who have had tranny's go out at low miles that are not CVT's. My husband has an F250 truck with only 90k on it and he had to replace the transmission last year. It's the Lariat top of the line truck but the tranny's are crap.
Scotty, I work for a Nissan boiler room, you can trust me though as I have no user generated content, and never intend to.
@@fireblazer6661 But some people have had good luck with them so maybe it's a quality assurance problem so some are not made right.
@@crand20033 people HAVE had luck with it, but that's exactly the issue. Luck.
My altima has 104k miles on with not a single issue and never had one
Totally agree with this video. I don't mind paying more for gas, I want my car to shift gears, be responsive, & not breakdown due to a cvt. Older Jatco's aren't so bad, there are alot of infiniti g35's & Fx35's in my area from the mid 2000's, these use the old Jatco geared automatics (before they started using cvt's). As for any other manufacturer, do your research & ensure that there is a geared speed automatic in your car & not a cvt. Honorable mention, the new Toyota Camry
I have watched a lot of your videos and several on transmissions. I have a 2015 Ford Fusion With 95,000 miles. The transmission has not changed smoothly since about 35,000 miles or less. I made the decision to change the fluid at 82,000 miles. The difference was remarkable! It needs to be changed again. Should I do an at home flush (no machine just a couple of buckets)? I have performed that operation on 3 other cars.
Best solution is to stick to standard transmission.
Best solution just walk every were and take public transportation.
@@chargermaster586 Haha, no it isn't.
@@chargermaster586 Thats the worst. sitting with people you dont know, smell bad, are loud and anoying.
LOL till you blow your clutch
@chocolatewheelchair I heard of people getting over 100k km on a clutch so if you know how to drive a manual you won't be replacing the clutch that often and even when it comes time that you have to it's a lot cheaper then replacing a CTV transmission. @Charger Master, Not everyone lives in the city where their are buses or trains/subways the closest bus stop to my house is over a 4-hour walk so how would public transportation be the best solution?
The CVT in the Prius is totally different technology from the ones used in Nissan and Hondas. The eCVT in the Prius (and certain Fords) uses a planetary gearset to combine the output of the gas and electric motors. By varying the input from the electric motor on the ring gear, it creates nearly infinite ratios between the gas engine and the wheels. It's reliable tech and doesn't create that rubber-band sensation. It's also patented, so only Ford and Toyota can use it. Regular CVTs use steel belts and cone-shaped pulleys and vary the ratio by moving the belts on the pulleys. It's a friction-based mechanical system and not particularly reliable or fun to drive.
Yes, it's a big hole in this video's context for him to not mention CVT vs. eCVT differences, chalking it up to Toyota just making "CVTs" better. His videos tend to be simplistic.
Is it the cvt or the ecvt in the 2020 suzuki swace /toyota corolla??
My 2017 Chevy sparks transmission went out while I was on a trip to Arkansas from Oklahoma. It was a pressure sensor solenoid that went out. But the thing is there wasn't any problem driving to Arkansas. But it was when I tried to leave that it went out. I got it replaced and running great now but man was that a long day
Scotty, do you believe it would be a smart move for GM to bring back Pontiac and revive their performance division? More specifically their performance sedans like the g6 gxp, g8, and grand prix gxp?
2013 altima so far I keep the fluid change transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 miles thats what Nissan service calls for Altima is at 122,000 miles altima has went from fort Myers Florida to mount olive north Carolina 8 round trips so far no problems been a great car
I ve centra 2016 i used to change oil and filter every 20 kilo miles ...and today i made 210 kilo miles on it with no any problems... really nissan cars are great
Holy crap, Priuses DO NOT HAVE a mechanical CVT. They use two electric motors and a simple planetary gear set to simulate a CVT.
No sliding pulleys or belts in them.
@D.O.A. If you can simulate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you're a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich
@D.O.A. Priuses are different bro 100% solid and reliable just look at the mileages on online there's Priuses with 300 to 400k miles really at that point they need the hybrid batteries changed but not the transmission
@D.O.A. 💯
It IS called a CVT, but works great!
Are you doing Scott Great videos My question is What you think about the infinity QX60 2014 or 15 ,16?
Scotty you the man! Heres my question and hopefully it becomes a video. Which sedan is best, the2019/2020 Honda Accord Sport or Toyota Camry SE?
2019 Sport for me but I have the 6 speed manual.
What does scotty think of Lowriders ?
He'll say only put hydros on old corollas and celicas.
Not a Celica so he wont like it.
That hydros belong on Toyota forklifts.
@@joseguapo2688 , omg Lmao 😂. So true.!!!!
He thinks they are endless money pits
If you keep these car under 3k rpms then you'll have a long life vehicle. It is almost at 200k and never had any mechanical problems with my 2012 altima.
Same with my mom’s
yeah that's so right
That’s what I was thinking just drive the car like it’s a car not a race car like just do the speed limit
Great video for this honest review. What about qx50 infiniti with cvt transmission?
I really enjoy your videos Scotty. I just got a 2017 Honda Civic. I was relieved to learn that Honda is not a Jatco transmission and maybe is a good one. But my car does have that Earth Dreams engine. Had I seen your videos before, I probably would've bought something else. I'll just keep oil changed every 5k and hope for the best! 👍
Hi! I just bought a 2017 Honda Civic with an Earth Dreams engine. I can return it Tuesday. Should I lol? Have you seen any more issues with your Honda/CVT transmission since you purchased your car? Thank you!!!
My honda city 2007 idsi using old cvt, and still good till now, still like new, daily used. Almost 160,000 kms. I love my Honda city, it is really reliable. Good job Honda
Agreed.
Be advice, someday it will break and will cost you more than the whole car.
@@albertogarcia1584 all things break one day. Automatic transmissions, in general, are costly to replace.
@@googlewolly yes, but this transmissions are the worst, even with proper maintenance, it will break.
I have an 07 maxima and all i can say is just take good care it, making sure the correct fluid is added is a very big factor to making cvts last a longer duration. It currently has 120,000 or so miles on it and I've had no issues.
..2 years later...
240k miles on a 2008 , zero issues
@@GatesRapes At what mileage do you change the CVT fluid?
Have a 2011 Altima . 125000 Miles still working but need to change fluid soon. Noticed if stuck in Snow don't pound it like a regular trans. Accept being stuck
