Helicopters would offload almost an entire battalion of men (at least), skipping the bloodbath on the beach, leaving plenty of time to offload more men, tanks and supplies in a leisurely and orderly manner. Aachen wouldn't have been nearly so troublesome either. Berlin may have liberated before the Soviets could even cross the German/Polish border.

  • My opinion the fight would have been much different... 1. German Fighters would not make it into the battlefield nor even see the F-22's or F-35's, they would just start dropping out of the sky. 2. Attack would happen at 3am and all bunkers, artillery, runways, infrastructure, bridges and armor would be taken out by either Cruise Missiles, JDAM's or GBU-28 Bunker Busters from High Altitude. 3. Naval Forces would never have been that close to shore especially the carriers and would not have been needed for Air support since RAF Fairford is 160 Miles from Omaha Beach. F-22's and F-35's would have flown Air cap over the battlefield while the B-1's, B-2's and B-52's would have decimated the entire shore batteries. 4. They would not have needed C-17's dropping in tanks since the US Army would have used their LCU-2000 landing craft that could hold (5) M-1 Abrams Tanks and would have easily landed on the beach after the main attack. 5. Once all Targets within 15 miles out have been neutralized since German WWII Artillery had a range of 11 miles. Support Elements would start being mobilized to the shore. 6. The main objective would not be Omaha at this point but Sword which would allow the capture Caen Airport quicker and to create a base to allow C-17's, V-22's, C-130's and CH-53's to bring in the Tier 3 Units from Great Britain where they would be staged. It also would allow other landing craft to arrive closer to the base since Caen has an inland port which is 6 miles from the Airport. This would allow troops to stage equipment and supplies much faster and easier. 7. There would be no clearing bunkers with troops, A-10's would not be providing close air support until the bunkers, AA Guns, Artillery were neutralized. This fight would be very swift, quick and devastating since it would be done in darkness with Night Vision and Thermal Technologies which would leave the German's in complete disarray and their command unable to communicate. I believe their will to fight would have ceased within the first 30 min.

    • Ther would be no F-22 or F-35 at Omaha but F-18 since US send its carriers, and right now, they only carrier combat aircraft is F-18, and they would not send their modern air force to England Air Fields for 2 reasons. 1. @userjlj@userjlj2 жыл бұрын
    • @@userjlj there'd be plenty of bunkers left. The SAMs would have denied the air to any planes trying to get withing 200 miles of the beach. No amount of HARMs could make a dent in something built that scale. The idea that a western air force can just waltz in over an airspace defended by modern AA systems is jingoism and self delusion. SAM systems are a whole lot cheaper to build than planes are, and they're a lot more effective at anti-air ops too. You'll notice that in the last 50 years, only in the Arab-Israeli wars of 67 and 73 did modern aircraft face modern SAMs. There a reason why we don't do this anymore. And a reason why the Russian S400 and US Patriot is so feared. SEAD against such is IMMENSELY dangerous even with high tech weapons such as a F35. If Normandy had the equivalent S400 systems stationed there, no aircraft would have ever gotten withing 100 miles or more of the coast. They'd be stuck in Britain. WW2 tactics with modern weapons doesn't ever work, if your opponent also has modern weaponry. Only when they don't does it work out OK.

So suddenly the world around them just explodes in a hail of metal and depleted uranium as some rounds explode, and others just punch through everything. Pretty standard for the GAU-8 Avenger to run 'combat mix' as they call it. Then the sound of the gun gets to them. Why observers here two sets of sounds are thanks to the fire rate of the A-10 is from the impact of the munitions and some detonating, and then the sound catches up. Both sound about the same, since they have the same frequency. But the target is dead before they hear 'the fart.'

  • Whilst this shows the effect of modern tech against the Normandy defences, the _actual_ battle would have been much quicker. A modern Battleship would have sat about a mile out of Dover and just _DEVASTATED_ the beach defences. Each bunker would have had a cruise missile posted through the gun port. Instead of British and US paratroopers being dropped in prior to the invasion, a joint task force of SAS and SEALs would have HALO’d in and just played merry hell with the defenders and reserve units. British Paras, RM Commandos, 1st Marine Recon and US Rangers wouldn’t have fast roped on the beach, they would have fast roped _directly on to the bunker objectives_ The Luftwaffe wouldn’t have even made it into the air, all of the aircraft would have been bombed on the airfields the night before. All of this would have been done in the dead of night. The attack would have commenced at midnight, Allied troops would be pushing into Paris by dawn. The total liberation of France would have taken a week (give or take a day) Total German Surrender within 2 months.

    • So, one Surface Action Group. This would include a submarine, which fires TLAMs. TLAMs would deal with the bunkers fairly easily, and with a little bit of help from F-35 spotting, SEAD pretty good too. After that, its a matter of eliminating targets at will. Meanwhile, engagement of enemy aircraft that do manage to scramble will be done with AMRAAM or Sidewinder. Deployment of NATO coalition to follow after SBS, SAS, Delta, and SEAL forecon operations finish. Land invasion is really only limited by supply lines, armored divisions effortlessly roll up the Wehrmacht, only urban zones proving a problem. In that then, Apache gunships engage in CAS and eliminate with laser guided 70mm rockets.

    @jmsmeier1113@jmsmeier11132 жыл бұрын
    • No, modern aircraft have a higher stall speed than any WW2 fighter's top speed, iirc. Additionally current RADAR capabilities are might not detect WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft, due to not having enough metal content in their construction, so those missiles wouldn't work. IFF would also only be "hearing" friendly signals, so technically that works as intended. Heat-seeking missiles might work, but they might end up targeting your own aircraft, or even ground vehicles, of both sides, but I don't know exactly how their seeker programming works. The best air defense in this case, modern United States Armed Forces, versus WW2 German Whermacht, would be to destroy the airfields the Luftwaffe are operating from. Classic SOCOM mission, see Britain's SAS in North Africa earlier in the war. Or add those airfields to the target list for the cruise missiles, and initial air strikes. Failing that, the Phalanx CWIS can do the job at the beachhead, once deployed, and before they are, the M2 .50 machine gun was originally from WW2, so any vehicle mounting one of these, as a pintle-mount, like on a Humvee, or atop the turret of an Abrams, can contribute to the air defense of the beachhead. Disclamer: I'm an Australian civilian, with no first hand knowledge of American military weapons, and technology. The above has come from my own thought expirments, born from an interest in 20th century warfare, including WW2 and Vietnam.

    • @@deathdisclover999 Every year for the last 5 years i have seen a tribute fight with the F-22, A-10, P-51 Mustang, and an F-15. If what you said about stall speed is correct that could never happen but I've seen it. With thrust vectoring I would guess that a F-22 can go slower than the stall speed of any fixed wing WWII aircraft. Don't forget the Harrier, it can sit stationary in the air if it wants to.

      @DanielTaylorOCMD@DanielTaylorOCMD2 жыл бұрын
    • @@deathdisclover999 While the metal content in a target is a factor in RADAR detection, it is but a minor one as modern day systems have a resolution strong enough to detect birds at long range, its however filtered out to prevent signal saturation. Remember, every single civilian passanger jet has a radar designed to detect individual water droplets that make up the clouds. IR-missiles however might see a drop in efficiency at least initially as prop planes have a sginificantly lower heat signature, but they would rarely if ever target friendlies by accident, as they are being fed the targets aspect directly before launch and ignore anything that doesnt have the same aspect. The workaround would be to simply fire the missiles are closer range where the high resolution seekers of the missiles have a much easier time to lock on to a planes signature. This was actually the big issue in Vietnam, early gen IR-missiles were tested and developed in a dry environment, but Vietnams humid climate made the otherwise sharp exhaust signature of a jet engine bloom out to a massive blob on the seeker head which lead to the missiles often missing their targets. While this was quickly fixed in later versions, the stigma never really went away in those days. On a final note, when engaging a significantly slower target, the Air Force has two options for engaing. One is the "boom and zoom" tactic where the engaging fighters take up speed, get into firing range, drop their missiles, fire a couple cannon salvos and leave the field without much maneuvering and then use their momentum to get out of the engagment zone, make a turn at a safe distance then come in again for another pass. Jousting, basically. The other is the "bait and switch" where one fighter actually slows down enough to make themselves an inviting target, becomming the bair, then when a tango gets behind them, the first fighter maneuvers in such a way to open the pursuer up for the second fighter that has been out of sight this whole time, effecitvely switching the roles between hunter and hunted. Your analysis on how the Luftwaffe would be crippled while still on the ground was spot on. Just to correct a minor technicallity, the ground based version of the Phalanx CIWS is called a C-RAM. ^^

  • Can you do the F-14 Tomcat vs Me 262? Inspired by the 1980 movie, The Final Countdown. P.S. I have a question, what if a Cold War era British Regiment (with plenty of troops, vehicles including tanks; like the Centurion (Mk.13) and Chieftain (Mk. 10), helicopters, plentiful ammunition including tank rounds) was sent back in time the Zulu War? And What will they do in this situation?

  • There is a trilogy by John Birmingham called WW2.1. It was about a 2020 United Nations task force responding to a emergency in Indonesia gets transported back in time to 1942 ? and accidentally wreck the USN. 1 of the novels actually had the D-Day landings with a mix of uptime, contemporary and auxiliary weapons and forces. Uptime - was those who came back in time. Contemporary (Temp) were those who belong in that era and used contemporary historical units and weapons and tactics. Auxiliary - were those who joined the Uptimers as a auxiliary force but under Uptime 2020 laws and rules. It was a United Nations task forced centered around the USS Hilary Clinton - Fusion Stack powered aircraft carrier (nicknamed 'The Big Hill'). The uptimers ended up making historical (by their standards) weapons such as F-86, Chinooks and even a 1944 B-52 variant.
