In today's video, we are going to talk about the Compass Heading, the Magnetic Heading, and the True Heading.
The Compass Heading is the angle between the heading of your Aircraft and the Compass North.
In order to calculate your Compass Heading you need to know the Deviation of your compass, this is so because each compass is affected by the Aircraft Magnetic FIeld.
The Magnetic Heading is the angle between the Magnetic North and your heading.
In order to calculate the Magnetic Heading, you need to know the Variation of your Location, this is so because the Variation changes from place to place and with time.
The True Heading is the angle between the True North and your Heading.
If you want to know your true heading starting from your compass heading you need to know your deviation, which will give you the magnetic heading, and then add or subtract your variation.

  • Hi, this is a great video and very informative. I have been taught to use a table “chocolate dairy milk very tasty driving trucks” to also find the headings. Could you explain this in detail please as I’m struggling to understand it?

  • Good Day Capt Gabriele, on which chart can we find the variation angle, is it the jeppesen sid/star chart? Thanks for your video and have a nice weekend... 👍👍👌

    • Hey, you are more than welcome!! Check the Airport chart, normally the 10-9. You should see the information regarding the variation angle. If you don't find it check the video I made regarding the variation angle few weeks ago. I made a practical example with the chart on that video. I wish you a great day!

  • Great intentions and good info man! But maybe get a few sessions with an accent coach :D? the theory is hard enough without having to real-time decode words like "manjeteek" to "magnetic" lol

  • Great video, but what is the differenc between heading course and track..do we fly headings only? Also do pilots worry about these terns in real pilot life (th CN MN and TN) or does the plane and computers worry about these stufff...😅💪🏼👍🏻❗

    • Hey, many thanks for watching!! Next week there will be a video about your questions!! Stay tuned... Normally we fly heading, however you need to be able to follow specifics courses.. (more about that on the next video).. In places where the variation angle is big the pilots need to do some extra considerations. I wish you a great day!

  • Great video, thank you. So when planning a flight without GPS, VOR, etc: Do you first plot the True course on the sectional chart, then adjust for magnetic Variation to get to Magnetic heading, then adjust for magnetic Deviation to get to compass heading? Then the compass heading, adjusted for wind corrections is your heading, correct?

    • You are very welcome!! In most of the place the Variation is quite small (around 2 or 3 deg), however there are places where you really need to calculate it as you mentioned otherwise you will not follow the intended route..
