Sri Lanka's civil war was one of the longest running in modern history. The conflict between the Sinhalese and the island's Tamils was brutal and terrifying, yet its origins were surprisingly recent. This video examines the forces of populism and population that grew into the horrifying experience that still scars Sri Lanka today.

Geopolitics is the key to disabled the power house....by doing that srilanka could be under foreign powers all the time, that would allow them to carry on their Trade,Global supply, and strategically safest spots for many western and Eastern countries... Still srilanka is one of the important country in Geopolitical Terms...

    • Rubbish. There is no such insight here. The video is produced with the intentions of sugercoating old and new versions of economic, cultural and political colonialism. A project Anglo British culture intiated long long time ago in order to ensure the long term spread and survival of the said culture, and they have succeeded so far, for better or worse, because that's how the human social animal function when it comes to our true behaviour.

  • Tamil people were never enemies historically, Chola empires had an enemity with Sri Lanka and other "indian" Tamil people like Chera and pandyans, Who happened to be allies of Sinhalese depending on their ruler. What caused the war was how British tried to separate major two ethnicities like how it is in Burma. And as a Sinhalese i believe that certain politicians will use the negative sinhala Buddhist nationalism(almost feels like a twisted version of christian culture of Europe simply localized.) And Sinhalese Royalty had always had intermarriages with Chera and pandyan tamils from India. But this doesn't mean today everything is all hunky Dory with our races its simply a battle with the good and bad. There are bad and good tamil/sinhala/muslim politicians. Bad and good priests and bad and good military personnel. Its just a very human story about people who will sacrifice many things for peace and those who will be greedy.

    • Indeed! Well explained. The author has stepped into an area he has very little knowledge about the recent or past history. Branding Dharmapala as a xenophobic, Sinhala racist is pure ignorance, if not fueled by vested interests. Dharmapala was a product of his time, the same way colonials, Tamil and Sinhala privileged politicians had created Prabhakaran. The only difference between Prabhakaran and Dharmapala are the biggest differences in the opposite direction. Prabhakaran was a dedicated, ignorant and stupid megalomaniac. Dharmapala employed the tactics of modern western liberal culture to attack cultural and economic colonialism. A far cry from what colonials did in this island and what the LTTE did.

I need to emphasize that the racial division has lead to the civil war and thousands of casualties along with economic damages. But it has done more damage to the country by keeping the corrupted politicians in the power. Until all sinhales, tamils and muslims comes to a true reconciliation I don't think Sri Lanka will ever be the country that it really capable of.

    • @@AlexRothman it doesn't look like that at the moment. You know that there is a certain group of people, elite people in countries like Sri Lanka that want to keep the things as it is so that they can continue whatever they were doing. This people's moment was a big blow for them. Yes they got a step back aroun May-July. But with the appointment of Ranil W as the pres they have slowly building up their authority again. We see huge repression against the activists in the peoples movement, media campaigns to change the people's mind set and build bad picture on people's movement, attempts to delay any elections these days. There will be 10 time hard economic crisis around this march than 2022 march. They are getting ready for that. Thing is Rajapakshas, Ranil Ws are the people run this elite class. These politicians give the required protection and the elite group provide the financial power. This is the cycle that causing all these issues. This racial division is just a tool that they use and with the stupidity of the most of the Sri Lankans its a very effective tool. Until the majority of the people realize this there is no hope for this country. In my estimation on 20-30% population are in this people's movement. That's not good enough to turn the country upside down which is exactly what SL required. Btw half of that people who seeked a change now have left the country since there is no hope staying here.

    • @@AlexRothmanIt's not just the ethnic conflicts that made Sri Lanka to this present day situation. People are trying to make it look like it's the main cause. The politicians that are Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim are responsible for the downfall of our country. Each had their own agenda and didn't care about the country or her people. Especially business owners, government officials were so corrupted and blame only the Rajapakses. Corruption have been happening since 1947. Majority SRI LANKANS do not change their foreign currency in banks, but from private business owners, because they offer more for your dollar. Where do the money go? To their foreign bank accounts. So first of all the govt should put restrictions on that. Corruption should stop from ground up. Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims here and living abroad were able to bring Sri Lanka to the present state of chaos, and pointing fingers to others.

The government has always tried to incite racial conflict but thank God nothing serious ever came from it. We Malaysians have probably learn from our past history. Back in 1969 May 13, there was a huge fight between the Chinese and Malays right after the general elections. Hundreds were dead in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. I won't go into the details but the incident is still classified till this day. Rumor has it that UMNO was the one that stir the conflict because they lost a lot of seats in the capital. Anyway with our new Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim currently, I believe Malaysia is in good hands.

    • Sinhala only act created conflicts among Sinhalese and Tamils true. But this act affected mostly Sinhalese as only Tamils, Muslims and Burgers were allowed to study in English medium. So the Sihalese were unable to secure highly paid jobs. Ceylon was called "Asia's Treasury " in her Golden Era. But due to J.Rs corrupted open economy ruined Sri Lankan's local companies like DASA, Velona, Hirdramanis, Vilasitha Nivasa which boosted Sri Lankan local goods. JR helped his business lobysts prosper by letting them export foreign goods. Dasa mudalali who brought the department store concept selling all Sri Lankan goods, and Velona and Vilasitha nivasa selling all made in Sri Lanka textiles and clothing couldn't compete with Majestic City foreign goods. Who owned most businesses in Sri Lanka ? Tamils and Muslims. Dasa mudalali the only Sinhalese entrepreneur was thrown to the curbs. Even the paddy farmers, and farmers who produce vegetables, onions, coconut were thrown to the curbs. Now the main exporters of coconut products overseas is Thailand and Phillipines. The propagandists say Coconut is a superfood now. All foreign currencies are given a high exchange rates by jewellry shop owners in Sri Lanka, and they promote it to the tourists who come to Sri Lanka. All Sri Lankans, including Sinhalese, tamils, Muslims and foreigners that come to Sri Lanka do not exchange their currency in banks. Hence the shortage of foreign currency in Sri Lanka. So in my opinion the downfall of our nation is due to Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim politicians, business owners, government officials, and a percentage of citizens. Once a Prosperous country now have to export rice, even onios from India, thus affecting our local farmers. So sad to say bringing Sri Lanka down to her knees is not the fault of one ethnic community, it's a team effort by the Sinhalese, Tamils and muslims.Vultures are waiting for a perfect opportunity to have a piece of our beautiful land.

They had a hard time securing jobs even with a university degree. Rich including the Bandaranayakes sent their children to private schools, UK and other western countries and private tutors. The govt company that I worked at had two peons who were degree holders from Peradeniya campus, because they couldn't speak or write in English. I have been researching on the connections between occultism and nationalism and broadly about extreme political ideologies. In the context of Sri Lanka, it just strikes me how Buddhism is the result of a socio-cultural set up by on European main strand of mainstream occultism. Nationalism is in my opinion the real globalist strand of political ideology. In the case of Sri Lanka it shows perfectly, mainly by its destructive effects: a wonderful island destroyed

  • This dude doesn't know what he's talking about. North wasn't a Tamil state before. There was Sinhalese in the North. However, due to invasions from South India, Sinhalese had to fled the Northern regions to stay alive. It's like the situation in Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine many times during the history and killed Ethnic Ukrainians in Eastern Ukraine. Then populated those areas with Ethnic Russians which carried from rural areas of Russia. Then in 2014, Russia called Crimea as a Russian territory. Then in 2022, Eastern and Southern Ukraine as Russia. Why? Because the majority of the population was Russians. But the truth is, it was forcefully populated by the invaders over the centuries! Sri Lanka was governed by Portuguese and Dutch before British. Before them, there were kingdoms which were fighting with each other. There were many invasions from South India before the arrival of damn westerners who are trying to teach history to us. A s a result, there were Tamil Royals who received pardon from Sinhalese kings lived in Jaffna. As the Sinhalese kings fights each other, those Tamil royals betrayed Sinhalese kings and started a kingdom in Jaffna. That's how Tamils started to live in Jaffna with a Kingdom. Now this %%^%^ a$$ is trying to tell a $h!tty story which has no evidences. He's probably referred to some websites or books published by LTTE Terrorist diaspora who living in Europe by fooling decaying westerners which funded Terrorism and Child soldiers.

  • According to Wikipedia The early form of the Sinhala language is attested as early as the 3rd century BCE. of course it is over 2000 years old, but The earliest period of Tamil literature, Sangam literature, is dated from c. 300 BC until AD 300. It has the oldest extant literature among Dravidian languages. Tamil was well developed even before a single word of Sinhala existed. and also Tamils were closer to Sri Lanka and at the time people could even walk to Sri Lanka over Adam's Bridge. The early form of the Sinhala language is attested as early as the 3rd century BCE. The language of these inscriptions with long vowels and aspirated consonants is a Prakrit similar to Magadhi, a regional associate of the Middle Indian Prakrits that has been used during the time of the Buddha. did you notice the word "Regional associate of the MIDDLE INDIAN Prakrits"? Tamils have a history of ruling even far away lands, including Sri Lanka too: i.e: Southeast Asia: Tamil traders and maritime activities influenced various Southeast Asian regions, including present-day Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The Chola dynasty, in particular, had strong maritime connections and established trade links with these regions. Tamil inscriptions and artifacts have been found in Southeast Asian countries, indicating their historical presence and influence. Sri Lanka: While not a faraway land in the strictest sense, the Tamil Chola dynasty exerted control and influence over parts of Sri Lanka during certain periods of history. The Cholas, for example, invaded and ruled parts of Sri Lanka in the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Maldives: The Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, had interactions with Tamil traders and occasionally came under the influence of Tamil dynasties like the Cholas and the Pandya dynasty. Tamil inscriptions have been discovered on some of the Maldivian islands. Sumatra and Java: Tamil traders and cultural influences are believed to have reached Sumatra and Java, in present-day Indonesia. The inscriptions and artifacts discovered in these regions suggest the presence of Tamil influence. Philippines: While not under direct Tamil rule, there is evidence of Tamil trade and cultural influence in the Philippines during ancient times. The presence of Tamil inscriptions and artifacts has been found in certain areas. These examples shows that Tamils have already explored more nations in the early stages of history. I am not saying that we should rule the country. I am just asking a simple question. "If you (Sinhala politicians) are so sure about the country's history, why destroy the historical artifacts which are related to Tamil people? If what you say is true those artifacts will only prove it and make your point much stronger!

Archaeological evidence of megalithic burial sites in Sri Lanka that are similar to those found in Tamil Nadu, India, and date back to the 5th century BCE. Ceramic sequences similar to those found at Arikamedu, an ancient Tamil port city in India, have been found at Kandarodai (Kadiramalai) on the north coast of Sri Lanka, dating back to 1300 BCE. He was nothing of the kind. Dharmapala's choice of words and phrases were to address the lethargic, politically illiterate Sinhala people in that certain era of colonialism in Ceylon. Dharmpala took on a mission that was too big for him and eventually, more or less abandoned it when he started noticing the exploitation of his work(or the results of his work being below his expectations). Perhaps, he would've come to a realization that according to the Buddhist world view, both Sinhala as well as Buddhism(as an organized religion) will eventually vanish from this planet, as everything will, including humans.

  • Great white explaining lol! The modern conflict between the Tamils and Sinhalese is due solely to British colonialism and the system’s preferential treatment of the Tamils. This can be seen in Africa with the ethnic tensions between Indians and Africans, and Malaysia with the ethnic Chinese and Indians with the Malays. Buddhist Sinhalese have mostly lived in harmony with the Tamils throughout history with the exception of the Tamil invasions by the Chola dynasty. As you mentioned, Buddhist Sinhalese royalty often intermarry with Chola princesses. Buddhism in Sri Lanka is syncretic with Hinduism. Oftentimes, one can see Hindu deities in Buddhist temples. The British destroyed this mutual cohabitation with their imperialism. But really how can I expect a kiwi to remain impartial in his explanation.

    @Verity888@Verity888 Жыл бұрын
    • There is no evidence of preferential treatment of the Tamils, that is a lousy myth and you clearly know nothing about Sri Lanka history. Note how I say Jaffna Tamils, other Tamils of the island did not have this level of academic success. It was a Jaffna peculiar thing. But yes it was definitely unfair that Sinhalese got into university with less marks than Tamils in the early 70s, my mother lost her place in university because of this racist system which did not reward merit. And the current state of the country reflects this corrupt state of affairs for not rewarding ppl purely on merit. • Just to be clear. Your history is wrong from the outset. Nobody really knows who was on the Island first for certain and it does not matter. But for the record Tamils were more likely on the Island first. Sinhalese migrated from the North, Tamils from the SOuth. Sri lankan archaelogists themselves have confirmed that Tamils were probably their first. Generally on an Island the minority were there first - Jews, Aboriginies, Maories etc. Tamil is an older language than Sinhalese. Hinduism is older than Buddhism. The Sinhalese were originally Buddhist fgs - a known fact. You have not mentioned the Mahavasama - which really caused the racial conflict. The Ramayana itself referenced Sri lanka and this book predates a lot of what you said. The Ramanya itself is a good proof that Tamils were there a lot sooner than you mention and probably the original inhabitants. The root cause of this conflict initially was nothing to do with Religion for the MOST part. It was the fault of the British who favoured the Tamils. The Tamils and Sinhalese got along fine for the most part. The British messed everything up. Dharmapala - nothing to do with the conflict. It was the ethnic minority being favoured and outperforming the majority which sowed the seeds of resentment and caused the war. Period. This video is so off.

  • Sri Lanka did not exist before 1971. It used to be called Ealam for more than 4000 years. Then the Portugese, Dutch and the British came, captured and ruled for nearly 1000 years respectively. During the colonial time, it was called Tabrabane, Ceylon. We had three kingdoms in the Island. Those were Jaffna, Colombo and Kandy that were merged by the British Empire as Ceylon for their administrative convenience. Jaffna Kingdom did exist for over 4000 years and the last king was Sangiliyan, defeated by the British Empire in 1614, and before Sangiliyan, was ruled by his father Pararajasekaran. Tamil language is the mother of Sinhala, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages. It has been on the record in the Oxford University archives. Also, it is well proved by a Harvard University professor as well.

Sanskrit is the mother language of Sinhala not Tamil despite Sinhalese scripts were heavily influenced by Dravidian Script as a result of Chola interventions happened during late Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa Era.

  • This video, for instance, is exactly the reason why Eelam Tamils in particular need to make their own history-related videos or gather information about the conflict. This KZheadr is not only whitewashing the conflict; he also spreads lies like the one that, before the war, Jaffna was 50% Sinhalese in his other youtube videos. The Tamils living in the foreign land are well settled, and they are not going to return to their ancestral land unless there is a Black July on those continents, which is highly improbable. So, as usual, the Eelam Tamils will never create or do anything to defend their history. On the other side, the Sinhalese are well educated-only politically when compared to the Tamils-and they are doing their best to tame and create a fake history about the Eelam War that is favourable to them while glorifying and whitewashing their genocide against Eelam Tamils. This video is created with some sort of agenda in mocking Eelam Tamils. There are 7 videos like this in this paid propaganda channel. This video clearly looks like a well-paid one because he concentrates on and contains the Tamil's struggle within child soldiers and suicide bombers (Eelam Tamil's Self-benefactors), whereas he glorifies the Sri Lankan military and its invasion and occupation of the Tamils' homeland, i.e., Tamil Eelam. The sources he used were written by Sri Lanka supporters and those who were in its favour. They are not neutral sources. As it's a video glorifying the Sinhalese victory over the Eelam Tamils and taming our freedom struggle as terrorism, as usual, the comment section is filled with Sinhalese who are appreciating and praising the video and the maker, who did this for money. Mark my words: sooner this video will be widespread, and the foreign-born Eelam Tamils will promote it and learn their history through it. Even now, I could clearly see some Tamils in the comment section appreciating this video. But I'm not sure 100% they are Tamils, because even Sinhalese with a fake Tamil name could comment like Tamils appreciated this video. This will result in our own future generations spitting up their own authentic, brave history because of the laziness and unwillingness of the present Eelam Tamil generation. Not only Eelam Tamil people but also everyone in the world will learn about our struggle for independence through this video, because it was created by a white man - without knowing that this was fake propaganda! Until we create a video about our history, this video must be reported or disliked in large numbers. Even if it is created, it will not be appreciated by our own nation and may sometimes be reported by our own people. i.e. paramilitary groups like EPDP, TMVP supporters and members and Colombo mixed Tamils. That's the unrest with the Eelam Tamils

As a result, parts yakka culture was well preserved with the Sinhalese to this day, veddah tribe rituals, devil rituals, sanni rituals etc. You can't see those native cultural values with Tamils, because your ancestors were the Chola settlers, that's why Jaffna culture is very similar to the culture in Tamilnadu, You can't see that with the Sinhalese & Odessa people. • Look like your history knowledge is weak, the Cholas went around south Asia around 1000 AD but no history of settling anyone anywhere. If you go to Trinco you can find Tamil writings which are from BC, Trinco used to be the tamil capital. Know anything about Ibankatuwa burial site? Pots were discovered there which were used for urn burials which around 2500 yrs old, the formation of the burial structure was exactly the same as the one found in Tamil Nadu, means same people lived everywhere in the south. If that not enough Sudarsan Seneviratne had some broken potteries with Tamil writings which go as back as 3000 yrs. Also they found coins with Tamil names which are from BC. Know anything about pancha Eeswarams? Know anything about Tamil king Ellalan who ruled most of the country during BC, at that time probably Tamils were majority.

  • There is no such Sinhalese pure origin. The Sinhalese are descendants from Indians and mixed with Indians time to time. 1. Vijaya came from West Bengal India and established Upatissagrama - 5th Century BCE 2. Mihindu Himi, Sanagamitta therani and 18 types of craftmans came from Kalinga Desha India in Anuradhapura era. 3. King Parakramabhahu is a Pandyan prince. 4. Many south Indian Chola Invaders and troops lived in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa era including Kalinga Magha, Elara, Arya Chakrawarthi 5. In Kotte era many Traders and soldiers came to Sri Lanka because of Cinnamon, Gem and Pearl Trades. Karawa caste people came for Mukkuru hatana against Moor traders in Puttlam - Chilaw areas. Chetti came for trades. 6. In Kandy era , four Nayakkar kings ruled country. They spoke Malayalam, Tamil and mix of Sinhala languages. Many singnatures in 1815 agreement with British rules had Sinhala and Tamil mixed letters. Sinhalese having a unique tradition currently when comparing to Tamils and south Indians. The beauty of it is , they derived from Buddhism, Ayurveda and some of the south Indian traditions.

    • The claim in the statement questions the idea of a "Sinhalese pure origin" and suggests that the Sinhalese are descendants of Indians who mixed with them over time. It references several historical figures and events to support this assertion. Let's delve into the details: 1. **Vijaya and Upatissagrama (5th Century BCE):** Vijaya, the legendary founder of the Sinhalese lineage, is said to have arrived in Sri Lanka from West Bengal, India. He is a central figure in Sinhalese folklore. While this suggests an Indian origin for the Sinhalese, it's important to note that Vijaya's story is part of a mythological tradition. 2. **Mihindu Himi and Sanagamitta Therani:** Mihindu Himi, an Indian Buddhist monk, and Sanagamitta Therani, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, played key roles in the propagation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. While this shows historical interaction between India and Sri Lanka, it's primarily related to religious diffusion. 3. **King Parakramabhahu:** There is historical evidence to suggest that King Parakramabahu had Pandyan connections. However, the Pandyan dynasty itself was a part of the broader South Indian cultural sphere. This interaction doesn't negate the possibility of a distinct Sinhalese identity. 4. **Chola Invaders and Other Inhabitants:** The statement correctly points out that South Indian Chola invaders and other South Indian groups had an influence on Sri Lanka. However, it's essential to recognize that such interactions occurred in many regions and don't necessarily negate the existence of a unique ethnic identity. 5. **Kotte Era and Nayakkar Kings:** The reference to Nayakkar kings is accurate. These South Indian rulers did have a significant presence in Sri Lankan history. However, the dynamics of rule and influence don't necessarily negate the development of Sinhalese identity. The key point here is that the history of ethnic identities is often complex, with interactions and influences from neighboring regions. It's also worth noting that the development of ethnic identity involves not only historical factors but also cultural, linguistic, and even genetic elements. While these historical interactions are valid, they do not conclusively negate the idea of a distinct Sinhalese identity. Ethnic identities are multifaceted and evolve over time, influenced by various factors. Reference: "History of Sri Lanka" by K. M. de Silva and Howard Wriggins.
