Today we are doing lots of different jobs around the farm and Baron just wants to run!!! We are cleaning the barns and dealing with some sawmill and tiling problems!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

  • If only every domestic horse on the planet had such good lives. Good nutrition, solid vet care, a purposeful job, grooming, guidance and love. Heck, the humans could all use that too. Have a great week Jim and Co.

    • @@christinehoffmann8512 I'm glad you are looking out for the comfort of the horses. But Lady is perfectly fine. Shes taken a step back and is not up by her feed box. You're on the wrong page of you're looking for mistreated horses. These horses have a great life. Stepping back in to the alley is not mistreatment by any means. Move on to gaited and dressage horses that wear gear that hurts, feel spurs and flex necks that is not natural and have rules that wont die. Or horses and livestock that are very mistreated on their way to slaughter.

  • Wow... the steam coming off Ken after the run...! What a great canter... Thanks Jim! And Baron just wanted to eat! If Kenny needs to let off gas, I'd sooner that... than have him encounter the difficulties of colic... I still remember Buck... (still miss him) because horses can have trouble passing gas... The solution of the water drainage via the tiling is a good one... just a matter of time... like every thing else when you live on the land... Blessings to all! ❤

    • I thought the steam was breath. I don't think they even sweated, way too cold, was a short workout. Had they sweated, Jim would have put their pretty red ruggies on, can't leave a sweaty horse standing about un-rugged, they get pneumonia real easy.

It was interesting that something like that ball of what ever it was could cause Baron not to pee...but once it was removed there he goes peeing like a race horse and saying...ahhhhhhh I feel better now!!! Thanks Dad for bringing me to the vet. Ken and Baron had a good trout as did Skippy with a good run. Skippy will sleep good tonight. • That is totally interesting. The movement of water is how I made my living as a Hydro-electric Power House operator, here on the West slope of the Sierra-Nevada. I enjoyed your explanation of your field drainage systems. The placing of drainage tile in the ground is one thing. The getting water into the tile is quite another. Jim is a good student and teacher. Thanks Jim and Brenda for some interesting parts of the life.

  • Thank You Jim and Brenda, on sharing your work around the farm today. Good luck with the Saw Mill Engine hopefully it's just a seal or a gasket replacement and not a catastrophic engine failure. . Baron and Ken are perfect examples of extremely fit and well fed horses and it show us viewers today. Jim right it takes an top flight teamster to let a team out into a canter and also that they know that Whoa means Whoa.

Please stay safe and God bless you and your family, William too.

  • I see your video with drain lines near the forest. It is not unusual for the groundwater hights on hills to be so high that it reaches above ground. Artesian pressure, i.e. the groundwater pressure is so high in parts of the year, it pushes water up above the ground. Your idea of making a sand/leaf trap is a good idea, but will probably be difficult to maintain. Open drainage ditches near trees are easy to clean, in contrast to drainage pipes and sand/leaf catch wells. You probably already know this, but an open trench along the forest edge, between the grass field and the trees, could be a solution, where leaves, soil compaction and roots can be cleaned. The drainage pipes can be connected to it, possibly with a connection with a catch grid for the foliage. The roots from the trees go for water and moisture and never stop clogging drainage pipes.
