Madara is the name of the historical-archeological reserve, which covers several hundred acres, since 2006 should be a protected area. It is located in northeastern Bulgaria. The center of the reserve is around the Grand Cave - a rocky canopy about 30 meters high and adjacent to the Little Cave. Both natural formations provided shelter to the most ancient population in the Balkans.
The main occupation of the population inhabiting the rocks is the collection of roots, fruit and hunting of animals. Due to their grandeur and unusual character, as well as the abundant water flowing from the rocks, they have become the largest cult complex in the Balkans - much more ancient and large-scale than the Delphi, Dodona or other known Greek lands today.
