The Hawker 850XP is a medium-class business jet, a modification of the Hawker 800 series created by the American Hawker Beechcraft on the basis of the famous British business jet British Aerospace BAe 125.
The aircraft can accommodate up to 8 passengers and has a flight range of about 4800 km. In total, more than 1,700 aircraft of the BAe 125 family were delivered, of which about 650 are of the 800 series, which makes them very popular and beloved around the world. The serial production of business jets was closed in 2013, however, their number in the fleets of many organizations and private owners continues to support their operation.
In today's video, we will meet one of the representatives of this eminent family: the Hawker 850XP of the Sirius Aero business aviation operator.

  • I flew Hawker 800As, Bs, and XPs for 8 years and nearly 4,000 hours. It was a great airplane; easy and fun to fly, stable, and tough as nails. Like a dump truck with wings. It wasn't the fastest, the longest range, or the newest, but it was a joy to fly and with a great cabin for a midsize aircraft, most passengers loved it. Eight was a fairly common passenger load for sub-3 hour flights. Since then I've been flying Gulfstreams for the past 5 years, and while better in nearly every measurable way, they aren't nearly as enjoyable to fly as the old Hawker.

    • Built them for 20 years and they are strong as a brick outhouse .Wing centre section is a collection of beams that carry loads with ease. Any aircraft that can take on a Mig 21 and survive is something to admire!

    • I gave the 800/850XPs about six years of my life over about 35 or so different serial numbers. Definitely one of the most enjoyable types I've flown. Unlike a lot of other models I've since flown, I never felt the Hawker had inadequate performance when I needed it. It's a rock solid design, well balanced controls, good brakes, excellent lift dump system, even the TKS never gave me a reason to worry. The biggest drawback was when we'd have it full of people that thought we were running a moving service. The Hawker was not designed to move a lot of cargo. Other than that, awesome machine.

    • I do agree with you completely and I would add that its penetration into air is perhaps, the best. Flying this beauty is like sliding on silk even with turbulence. I guess that it has been underrated nevertheless, it is a legend. It isn't a Ferrari like a Lear or a Gulfstream (I've never flown a Gulfstream), but as you've said, it is a joy to fly it.

  • I worked for RAC and HBC and had the honor of redesigning the emergency oxygen system for the XP, and the glass cockpit on the 4000. It is a shame the old girls are no longer in production, but that is the way of things when an investment consortium purchases a business and a market bubble bursts. It was a good feeling to come to work and look down the assembly line at the Hawkers, when their nose cone is open the planes look like they are smiling.

  • Liked the video. As a technician with experience on the hawker family 700 - 850xp and the 1000 it brings back some memories. My employer has sold off its fleet a few years back. The plane was built like a tank but was not every maintenance friendly. The main gear actuation was like a Rube Goldberg machine. TKS system was a corrosion nightmare. Still though one of the best aircraft I have worked on.

  • We absolutely Loved our 3ARA with Rolls Royce Viper 500's. Designed with great power and short grass field capability. There were a couple airports that charged us a $500 noise violation fee, sounded like a fighter jet on takeoff. Worth Every penny to see the people come out of their hangars and homes to see what the heck just took off! The later 400 series was common to take the fan conversion. Slower and quieter but more range. I still like the vipers though...

  • The Brazilian Air Force is a long time costumer of these aircraft, from the first model until the 800 series. They are used not only in VIP mission, but also for radio calibration duties and other stuff I can't remember. If Embraer didn't start to offer jets in this category, I bet they would still be buying new versions of them.

  • My Dad’s company used an HS125 as a target aircraft for radar testing. I got a tour as a kid and the main thing I remember was the sheepskin trimmed pilot’s seat and yellow paint job.

  • You need to mention that Hawkers are built like a Tank. Saw a picture of one after a flight somewhere in South Africa that took a ground to air missile to its left engine which was blown off, however the Hawker landed without anyone being hurt. Don't know how anyone's underwear made it though.

  • I know it's an old fashioned jet but what the heck, I love it! If would have the coin, for sure one would be mine. I've always thought the is beautiful and yet safe private jet. The one thing I like very much about the airplane, it's the smooth penetration into air that is noticed immediately while it is aloft.

  • You can really tell these are of an different era when you spend some time with a Hawker. From a ground handling point of view, they’re quite quirky. They fuel extremely slow, the lavatory is interesting to service, use of TKS, and a wacky baggage compartment. Oh don’t forget the loudest APU on the flight line! The flight deck also looks straight out of a Star Wars movie with the upper dash design.

  • I've had the pleasure of working around the 125 for some years . And had the pleasure to fly on a few. It has to be one of Britain's finest aircraft designs. Very popular in it's time for a mid sized jet . And sold well all over the world . The 125 has come a long way since its early days at Hatfield in the uk .

    • Not really. Big jets need big APUs, and they aren't really that large anyway. Remember how small the Hawker is. And of course a an APU you don't need a fan section (not applicable to turbojets, obviously), all you need is the gas generator core and an extraction turbine and power output. And the nacelles make them look bigger than they are, covering up all the ancillaries, etc.

  • In the book DaVinci Code Sir Lea Teabing owns a Hawker business jet that he uses to shuttle back and forth between France and the UK. I think it was the 800 series. Can't remember exactly. So I automatically equate that plane to British Gentleman.

It sounds like he is saying that 125s are most commonly _seen_ burnt out on airstrips, because that is when they end up in the news. Which is why he said they are _being found_. That is not the same as saying 'the majority of Hawker 125s ever built have ended up burnt out on clandestine airstrips'. At most he is saying that of the limited number of these planes still in service, it seems like most end up burnt out on clandestine airstrips. That is neither meant to be taken as a factual statement, nor is it meant to include _all_ Hawker 125s ever built in the total. When I say 'damn, it seems like most 1969 Camaros end up butchered and ruined by some hack _modding_ them', it is not meant as an argument that 51% or more of the 243,000 1969 Camaros ended up ruined by bad hot rodders, it means that of the few remaining, many are being ruined, or most of the ones you _see_ on the streets or in magazines are ruined. Since probably 230,000 of those Camaros long ago went to the scrap yard, I don't need to prove the existence of 125,000 bad hot rod Camaros, especially since it was a figure of speech in the first place, not a precise statement of fact: a lot of 1969 Camaros are being ruined. That is the gist.

  • The US uses the jets as the C-29, IIRC, and Japan builds them under license (I think) as the U-125 and U-125A SAR aircraft. Korea has a similar variant called RC800, but I think those are just converted from production jets, while I am reasonably sure the US and Japanese variants were built as military jets.

    • Roland Lawrence yes looks that way. I was surprised to see this too because as an ex Raytheon & HawkerBeech salesman, I know that the FAA never certified the 125 for unprepared field operations. Maybe that was an early promotional video clip?

  • TKS never worked well. As you fly, you are packing dust in the leading edge of the wing where the TKS is supposed to flow. Yes, you are supposed to run the “egg timer” for... what was it?? 4min every hours. That could be wrong, but when you fly it according to the manual, and maintain the system, it is always dripping slippery TKS on your hanger floor over night. You always have to refill the tank as you should always be running the system. The FAA has cited people for carrying TKS onboard as it is hazardous. It was expensive! Not as bad as the Astra, but it just doesn’t have much interior volume for the price. Not much space for baggage either. There is no way to load baggage for eight and crew in the winter. I flew all the early ones through the XP. You might think having a Rolls Royce is a good thing until, you fly the 522’s. The BR’s were a big improvement. The maintenance is covered in other posts. It’s going to take all hands to do the maintenance. I don’t miss them at all.

  • One of the worst planes for maintenance (800/850/900 series). Guaranteed to get cut/scratched going into the Hell hole in the back.. Tire changes are a nightmare compared to other type /Anti -ice system quite leaky.. Pilots and clients like them though..

Coin slot screws and imperial standard bolts... and the way they did cotter pins... Nope, nope, nope, never working on one of these atrocities again if I can help it.

    • Oh dear, well each to their own I suppose. ''Cotter pins'' are known as split pins in British parlance by the way. I think you are talking about the British custom of tucking the legs into the slots of the nut? It's a different way of doing it I admit, and takes time to master, but it leaves no sharp edges to catch skin or wires. The screws were I admit a pain in the arse, but again there were ways to deal with them. Never ,ever turn the head for final tightening and always put a thin piece of plastic between the bit and the screw head. Not sure about your complaint about Imperial standards they are common in the industry, every Boeing I worked on uses Imperial for example, so does every engine!

  • as a mechanic that has worked Bombardier, Falcon, Gulfstream, Lockheed, and Hawker I can assure u from a maintenance perspective they are terrible, worst plane on earth to maintain... If ur in the market just get a Bombardier Challenger 300.

  • Those things are maintenance nightmares and should have went out of production in the 80's. It's one of the biggest POS jets flying around today. The HF radio was from the 80's early 90's and constantly had issues, it was located in the dorsal fin. The APU was an after thought and was smashed in the aft equipment bay and was nearly impossible to access for maintenance. The electrical system still used fuses and still had components from the original design in the 1960's making electrical problems a common occurrence and a nightmare to fix with huge overly complicated 1960 contactors. The ZL panel holds electrical components and fuses and if a fuse blows you have to take out the batterys, aux oxygen bottle, DEECs, and other electrical boxes just to replace a simple fuse. The fire bottles were crammed up in the roof of the equipment bay and were a nightmare to replace. The pedestal literally has not been changed since the 1960 design and did not come apart easily like on modern jets. It was a nightmare to replace switches in the pedestal or do any kind of maintenance in it. The wind heat controllers were mounted upside down in the DA panel and it was easy to drop a mounting screw which would then fall into the CB panel and could take hours to retrieve. The doors steps were also made of WOOD! Yes wood! from the 1960 design and had shitty leaf type springs that assisted in closing the door. It was common for these springs to get jammed or break and the door would come slamming down and break the door handle and smack the ground. The springs also were dangerous to replace because they could "let go" if damaged and unravel super fast with razer sharp edges cutting off a finger easily. The hydraulic system used special British fittings from the original design and normal sized American wrench's would not fit on the hydraulic line couplers and you had to spend a lot of $$ to get the special British wrench set for it. The landing gear could accidently be installed on an older hawker from the XP and to prevent this they made the wheel axle nuts reverse thread and if you didn't know you could be there for a while trying to get the wheel off. Also the axle nuts require a special British tool again just to get off. Also the plane used British coin slot screws from the 1960 design, which always stripped and were a nightmare to get out. The only good thing about that plane was the honeywell engines and that's about it .

  • Total bullshit! I worked on a 400, The damn thing fell apart just sitting in the hangar! the pilot said it was the only plane he ever flew that had green exhaust! Then I saw the 800 being brake tested, Did Hawker ever build a flaps that did not have built in Corrosion? Then Beechcraft decided to get involved in it and that brought the end of Beechcraft!

    • I don't think you can blame any single aircraft for the demise of a badly run company. ALL aircraft have corrosion; I have worked on over 100 different aircraft types in hangers all over the world and every single one of them had corrosion .Why would you complain? Did you not get paid to fix it? And a 400 series? An aircraft possibly 50 years old and with thousands of flight hours and you complain about it? how well was it maintained, under what conditions? As to the brake system I used to work on them and had little in the way of problems other than the usual ones ..which again I got paid to fix.

    • Jeez John Haedtler; why so negative? And why start your criticism about the British-designed 125 series with a comment about the Japanese Mitsubishi designed 400 Diamond jet? Hawkers are great aircraft and hard to call it’s demise coinciding with the 2009 Great Recession after 45+ years of evolution and enduring competitiveness amongst its rivals. Chill out !

But to complain about corrosion on aircraft seems a trifle odd.I don't do aircraft maintenance now but the last 20 years of my working life was spent rebuilding older aircraft rebuilding them from wrecks to flight worthy condition. Now THAT'S corrosion! ! I've worked on thousands of aircraft and hundreds of types and the 125 is in my top 10 for fun and durability. I write for a living now but miss my time on the line and production line.
