  • As someone who’s taking their driving test Saturday, this made me less nervous 😄 Can’t wait to watch this back after -- Update: I passed! Good luck to everyone who's taking theirs soon! (Also I've been waiting so long to get my license, I did driver's ed a year late, got my permit 3 months later than they told me I would, and then waited to get my actual license until I wouldn't have any restrictions bc it was only the difference of a month so it's been a journey)

  • I don't know if this was for content or real, but either way here are a few tips on controling a manual car: So, there are three pedals, on the right, we have the accelerator (some might refer to it as the gas pedal) On the middle, there is the brake pedal And on the left, there is the clutch pedal. The gas and the brake are controled with the right leg, and the clutch is controled by the left leg. Before you start driving, just know how to STOP, because knowing how to abort a procedure before doing the procedure is always great. Press down the clutch all the way, and gently press the brake. The harsher you press on the brake, the more sudden the stop will be and while not illegal, it can cause back pain. If you're driving at a speed that's above 25-30kph, first brake until you get to that speed, then press down the clutch (while keeping your right leg on the brake) Now, to start the car, you need to 1. make sure the handbrake is engaged 2. put your right foot down on the brake just in case 3. put your left foor on the clutch, all the way, and either rotate the key in the switch, or press the start button, depends on the veichle. Before letting go of the clutch, you want to make sure you're in neutral gear, and the way to do that is to try to wiggle the stick shift from one side to the other, and if it does wiggle, you're in neutral. If it's not, then the car is in gear and you need to move it back to neutral, which is in the middle. After you've made sure that the car is in neutral, you can take your foot off the clutch, and make sure the handbrake is engaged again, then take your foot of the brake. Now is the time to set up apple maps/google maps/waze, select a nice playlist and take a breath. How to start driving? Hold down the clutch, now, select first gear. Move your stick shift over to the left, and up. You are supposed to be in first gear. Here's a drawing of how it may look, but without reverse, which is in a different spot in each car. 1 3 5 | | | | | | ----------------------- | | | | | | 2 4 6 (Some cars may only have 5 gears) Now, make sure you hold the brake pedal with your right foot, and release the parking brake. Do not release the clutch just yet! After you've made sure it is safe to move off, (and I would suggest to do it somewhere quiet with a lot of space) Now, release the brake pedal, and lift the clutch until the car starts to roll. Hold the clutch at the point, which is called the bite point, then try to stop by pushing it down and braking. Do this multiple times until moving off is smooth, and stopping is smooth. Don't add gas just yet. How to shift? And why? The car has different gears because lower gears will have an easy time carrying the car in low speeds, while higher gears are more well suited for high speeds. Your first shift will be from first to second gear. Remember first? Over to the left and up? Second is just like that, but instead of up, we're going down. When shifting, hold down the clutch all the way, because it seperates the engine from the wheels, and if you shift without holding it down it could cause damage to your car. Try to shift a couple times while you're parked, and try to do it without looking. When you succeed (NICE JOB!), Try to do it while the car moves. So move off, but now, after the car has settled on a low speed (without accelerating), you can try to let go of the clutch. The car should keep moving, but if it suddenly stops and turns off, you let it go a bit too early. Try again, there's nothing to be ashamed off, it happens to the best of us. Add some speed with the accelerator, and when the engine spins at about 2500 rpm (maybe a bit more than that, even if you hit redline technically it's fine, but as a beginner you should never do that), the rpm is shown on the dashboard, let go of the gas, hold down the clutch, select second gear, and now you want to slowly lift up the clutch all the way up. try to do it in three seconds, not less. Now press the accelerator a bit and you should be in second gear. Congarts! If it felt like the car was jumping when you were letting go of the clutch, you didn't do it smoothly enough. That's fine, it takes a lot of time to get used to, but try to work on that, as this might be the most challenging thing a manual driver can do. Want to stop? No problem, hold down the clutch, then brake. (without letting go of the clutch). But what if you don't want to hold down the clutch? Maybe you're fearing of putting a lot of stress on it, which isn't as bad as people make it to be, but the owner may be concerned. You can hold down the clutch, switch back to neutral, and keep braking without holding down the clutch. This is not very good when stopping on a hill, as the car might need some gas just before stopping to make it smooth, without rolling back. But on (most) other occasions, it's perfectly fine to stop that way. This was jsut a quick thing I wrote to help you, hope you read this, and have a nice day. Good luck! And remember - don't give up and switch to an automatic if you feel like you aren't good enough. This is not the case. It takes practice, and you'll be amazing if you'll take your time and try. I believe in you.
