  • Short summary of what they said: - Show best work first - ArtStation is a Go-To place for portfolios/reels - Keep work quality consistent - If you use music in your reel, don't do metal, dubstep or country roads stuff - Always include your contact information (email, website, ...) - At 22:50 they show their reels - Reels should be around 1 - 2 minutes long - Especially for models, choose a lighting setup that shows everything you would like to show of your model (don't go crazy with lighting) - Show some range (character modeling, anatomy sculpting, hard surface modeling, etc.) - Inlcude breakdowns of your work Very important: Keep it simple! :D

I definitely think it stopped me from going forward in the process. I still have my ArtStation portfolio but I am making my own site as well.

  • Hey guys! I wanted to say thanks for all your tips. They are definitely helping me along my journey. It's so many things to take note of but I appreciate videos like this for artist everywhere. With this being said, I like product design and eventually I want to start a freelance/consulting business using my skill set (modeling and animation) but I want to explore different 3D industries such as games, film, automotive, and advertising. When applying to companies who are not particularly AAA companies would you say these same rules apply? Also based on what I want to do what do you suggest I model or animate certain things? I guess I'm just looking where to start?

I duely appreciate the advice in getting in this carrer and it has helped me build my portfolio tremendously , exspeacially since my portfolio was awful before this but the one problem i have is how to get those connection, im sure you had a video about this suvh as the internship video but i was curious if there was more ways other than that. But amways i really loved this video thank you so much, im truly greatful for all the helpful advice you have been giving for the longest time

  • Don't be like me and spend 8 months making things and just slapping it on a art site. Actually make sure you present your work well and in a clean manner to make sure its not off putting to whoever you are presenting to. I've been experiencing difficulty with my portfolio and keeping it at a consistent quality, a simple reminder was all I needed. The work is done all it needed was to be presented well (Except the things that really needed fixing). Seriously guys don't be like me and big thanks H&N for all the advice!

Ever since I graduated from school I've been getting a steady stream of freelance work from different clients and I am happy about that, however, I have not been able to secure a position within a company. • It's still so strange to me when someone's requiring reel for SCULPTURE, for example. I understand reels when it's on point, like with animation, simulation and all of that stuff, but just WHY FOR A STATIC THINGS? We live in 2018, you literally can upload your super-dense model to a web-viewer like Sketchfab or Marmoset viewer, so whoever wants to look at that could literally see it from any angle. That's kinda point of 3D, isn't it? Reels seems to be so anachronistic for this purposes.

    @bohdan_lvov@bohdan_lvov5 жыл бұрын
    • Totally agree! It feels very archaic.

    • Showreel takes a 1-2 min and shows the best representation of your works - it's short and it's all in one place. Clicking around links (on who knows what devices) to view your model "in detail" is something nobody has time to do. You are not the only one applying for that job.

    @eeveemikat@eeveemikat5 жыл бұрын

  • Hey, Greetings from Brazil. I'm studying 3d modelling for a while (eight months) while coursing Digital Games (most programming parts course). The course itself introduced me to the 3d world but I feel it's kinda holding me back for now. I spent so much time and effort doing homeworks and other stuff that I don't want to work with, like creating databases, online applications, Programming for mobiles. Would be better to quit the course to focus myself In studying 3d to become better on it? There are no specific graduations here to those who want to be 3d artists, so I would have to do online courses and kinda learn by myself. And it looks like there are a lot of things to learn yet and I can't learn faster because of the time I spent here. Kinda feels like a snowball. I try to learn, notice that there are 5 other things to learn(modelling techniques, optimizations, UV' s, Texturing ....) Sometimes I even feel stuck, not knowing how exactly evolve, what to improve. does anyone feel or felt the same?

  • Why Pros don't apply these rules? I've seen a lot of reels from pros that literally show shots of the movies they've worked in but that finished shots are made by a team of people and they don't even make a little breakdown focused on their specific work. I hate that reels, a lot of spoilers but no breakdowns.

    @leecaste@leecaste5 жыл бұрын
    • Once youre working in the field, you rarely get breakdowns from the studios, and the only thing you'll have to show are the final sequences. It's not ideal, but the best we can do. That said, people should always have a reel breakdown, as it's impossible to know what they did otherwise.
