The Battle of Hastings[a] was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman Conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 mi (11 km) northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory.
The background to the battle was the death of the childless King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, which set up a succession struggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned king shortly after Edward's death, but faced invasions by William, his own brother Tostig, and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway). Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig and Hardrada at Stamford Bridge left William as Harold's only serious opponent. While Harold and his forces were recovering, William landed his invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September 1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold was forced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went.
The exact numbers present at the battle are unknown as even modern estimates vary considerably. The composition of the forces is clearer: the English army was composed almost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of the invading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found his army and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confront Harold. The battle lasted from about 9 am to dusk. Early efforts of the invaders to break the English battle lines had little effect. Therefore, the Normans adopted the tactic of pretending to flee in panic and then turning on their pursuers. Harold's death, probably near the end of the battle, led to the retreat and defeat of most of his army. After further marching and some skirmishes, William was crowned as king on Christmas Day 1066.

Thankyou for sharing your work and much appreciation for the time and effort you put in.
@@eardwulf785 Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment.
Mate please do more of these…I’ve a huge passion for history but this video is one of the best I’ve seen, your channel deserves way more recognition, this goes to show the KZhead algorithm sometimes really suprises me, chuffed I found your channel
Τhank you very much and welcome aboard! I'm doing my best to produce similar videos as fast as possible, but being a single person the whole process is very time consuming. That being said, I'll soon have a video about the battle of Edington ready. It should be published within 2 to 3 days from now. So, stay tuned!
@@historybattles3D no mate, thank you honestly! I’m even more amazed there’s not much people involved with these videos, your doing an amazing job, cannot wait for the battle of edington 👌 keep doing what your doing mate
This presentation, together with Part 2, is a phenomenal teaching aid and the stunning videos certainly bring this earth shattering change to Britain to life in a way books could never come near to. Such hard work and dedication to bringing history alive deserves much accolade. Thank you for your great work.
Looks really good! Absolute legend! I noticed someone already noted the odd animation for some individual characters, it kinda blended with the voice over in places. I liked it and look forward to the battle. Cheers from Tennessee
I think I understand which animations are a bid odd. I believe that the mouth twitching is what causes this. I'll think about it. If it turns out to be too distracting I'll either remove facial animations altogether or remove some strange parts from the animation.
@@historybattles3D It wasn't distracting per se, but there was a part when Duke Billy filled the screen and his mouth moved with the voice over. I thought he was narrating his part until it didn't match. After that I got used to it. I liked the whole vid. Can't wait for the battle. I'm still betting Duke Billy goes far. LoL. Cheers from Tennessee
@@paulceglinski7172 Ah, I see what happened here. The facial animations are not meant to mirror the voice over. They are just "cosmetic" additions to make you think that the character is talking in the background. Yeap, Duke Billy is going to change history I'd say...haha Cheers man! Thank you very much for being here.
This was last time Britain was invaded over a thousand years ago. The Spanish tried it in 1588 (the Spanish Armada) The French had drawn up plans during the riegn of Napoleon Bonapart. Hitler had drawn up plans also it was called operation "Sea Lion " They all failed.
@@chrisholland7367 Frenchies invaded England in 1216 and were able to gain control over London during the baron's revolt
Think about that. No radios. No internet. No gps. 700 ships? Amazing loyalty and navigation.
i always find it amazing that a runner went 270 miles up to stamford Bridge near York and found Harold (i mean how did he know where to find him and where he was going) then harold marches his army 270 miles south with no sat Nav..and finds William's gang which (the biggest surprise)..ARE STILL THERE!
😂 I hear ya. I’m thinking maybe things were actually more chaotic and we add organization to it through the years.
That, my friend, was excellent and I can't wait for more! Kudos for a job well done!
More to come!
This is amazing! Great work
Thank so much!
Excellent, thank you for this. William a ginger, nice touch.
You're very welcome
Love the work, keep it up
Thanks! I'll try to
Damn this looks good! I found another history gem!
Great stuff 👏
Thank you 🙌
Can’t wait for the full video!
I'll upload it within a few days. Thanks for sticking around!
Been periodically checking in to see if anything new came up. Happy you continued the good work brother🤙🏻
Thanks for sticking around! It is quite time consuming, unfortunately. I wish I could upload once a week.
@@historybattles3D im sure it is veryyyy time consuming. You’ll get there eventually. If you ever go back and look at some of the most successful history channels first videos, you’ll see the increase in videos. Just takes some time and catching traction. I know you have way more subs now since the first video.
Omg! This is amazing! Hopefully many others discover your channel.
Thank you so much!
Looks really good!
Hey BI3D! Thank you very much for commenting here. I'm really honored.
Wow crisp animation and amazing voice over
Thank you so much! The battle is coming within the next few days.
Since you mentioned Game of Thrones, I’ll let everyone know that doesn’t jic they wanna learn more, The dance of the Dragons which is what the new HBO show House of the Dragons is based on is actually based on a real life event called “the anarchy” it happened in England from 1138-1153, also Game of Thrones the original run is based around “the war of the Roses” in England from 1455-1487. If you read up on these historical events you’ll easily be able to see who the character in the show is based on in real life. Obviously George added dragons and ice zombies, but the plot gets its foundation from these events. Even the Targaryens who were invaders from the east with their bright silver/blonde hair riding dragons are based on the Vikings who a lot had fair skin, blonde hair and the ships they came to England in had giant dragon or snakes heads on the prow of their ship, yes others would of had other mythical animals as these carvings were meant to protect the ship and crew from bad weather, raids, other men, and Sea Monsters. Also, each of the 7 kingdoms represents a real kingdom in real life, The Reach is France, the ice wall represents hadrians wall, the north is medevial Scotland and beyond the wall is I’ve heard a representation of picts from Ancient Scotland, Dorne: is Spain during the times of the moors, The riverlands is Netherlands and Belgium, the vale is Switzerland/Austria, the Westerlands(castle rock) is England, iron islands is Norway/Iceland(Scandinavia), Stormlands is Wales, across the channel places like Slavers Bay are Egypt, Essos is Asia, the Dothraki are mongols/Huns mixed with Native Americans if I’ve heard right.
BOI you made something wonderful. You mad lad did it!
Thank you so much! Within a few days I'll upload the battle which is made in the same style.
@@historybattles3D Perfect! I'll be waiting for it.
Awesome 👌
Thanks 🤗
Bruh brilliant ✅
Wow, amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Finally it is out! Looking great so far. I bet the next one will be a bloody affair. (btw, in some scenes - the mouth animation look a bit odd..is it UE4 limitations?)
Hey my friend! Maybe some animations are weird due to the motion capture method I've used. I cannot resort to expensive solutions yet.
What engine you made this? Look like a game?
Really superb! But the moments of perfectly still heads with wandering eyes and twitching noses is really creepy Of course, that may have been intentional, just adding to the overall impact of the video...
His name was pronounced Guiyelm, not William. He is best known as Guiyom (spelled Guillaume in French) the conqueror. And he didn't look like an English trader from the city, either.
I knew that he probably had red hair and he was clean shaven. That's what I've tried to depict here. Everything else is kind of generic because we don't exactly know how he looked.
@@historybattles3D You nailed it brother. I'm fairly well read on Anglo Saxon England and his red hair is recorded. Thankyou for choosing The Battle of Hastings as one of your historically important battles. Wassail!
@@eardwulf785 Thank you very much for your kind words and wonderful feedback! I'll be posting the battle within a couple of days, max.
@@historybattles3D Looking forward to it
I think this animation shows how William might have looked in his gap year between boarding school and university when he decided to go travelling
5:12 William's jaw.
I love this kind of content but the faces and their animations are unsettling
Yes, it was due to defective motion capture I guess. Budget limitations. I have since removed these facial animations altogether.
@@historybattles3D ah great. Great stuff otherwise!
@@alexanderkappelhoff2819 Thank you!
If Godwinson didn’t have to fight two different battles and wasn’t spread so thin he would have won and England would have an English king.
Next, making about Ottoman empire
its like a total war mod
I don't think that the close-ups have any resemblance to a total war game tbh.
Great videos lad but what’s going on with the guys chewing and twitching their noses like they’re on drugs haha 😂
Just keep the battle total war style and make the next battle of hastings video as strategic and detailed as the first video.
It is the most detailed battle video I've done yet. It will be published today at 6 PM, central European time.
