What Determines a Catalytic Converter Price?

Catalytic converter prices can feel difficult to look up if you want to know your converter value as scrap. Where is the catalytic converter price lookup app? I spent a long time trying to find a catalytic converter price list with pictures and serial number to make sure I was being well paid for recycling these valuable scrap components and after some frustration I was still left wondering; How are catalytic converter prices determined? And how can I access the precise value?
I found my answers through connecting with PMR, a catalytic converter recycling company equipped with a laboratory where truckloads of scrap converters are processed and tested every day. And if this video doesn’t answer all your questions, head to www.pmrcc.com/en/ to get in touch with the experts!

  • I used to scrap cats, aluminum wheels and copper wire almost exclusively. Those items are where the real money is. Considered myself above the fray, an elite scrap "dealer". The key was to always have thousands in 100 dollar bills. This was to impress the people you are trying to buy from. Make them want those hundreds. Did not have my own money at first. The big guy gave me money to buy cats and such in my area, as he did with many others "my competition". As a middle man I made a lot of cash then. Problem was that the entire thing ran on my ability to buy things from scrappers at the lowest cost I could, and my money guy did the same to me. The whole thing was based on your ability to take advantage of the less knowledgeable people you dealt with. My guy above me is now in prison for possession of a lot of stolen property including tractors, diesel rigs and cats. I got out way before that happened. It was like the junior mafia training camp. All of this could not have existed without the pervasive lack of general knowledge about the "Real Price". So, THANK YOU. This may be more important than you realize friend. 😐 🏴‍☠

    • Thanks so much! I realized it was a little back-and-forth with the info but that’s what learning about it was like. It took me awhile before I felt like I understood the info well enough to break it down but I do see now why it’s not as simple as “looking up the price”

      @thubprint@thubprint Жыл бұрын
  • You clean up nicely. That being said - not sure I am any less confused than when I started. I also do not get that many convertors so I guess I am less likely to do a deep dive on the subject. Thanks for the content

  • The smaller recycler will not be able to capture price hikes / peaks of the precious metals due to the small quality they can collect / sell. They charge more margin so they are compensated for the metal price negatives they may suffer due to this. The metal price positives are seen as a bonus in profits, they do not pass this on to the customer as the prices flucuate so much. It would cost them more in time / money to insigite this than they would make in bonus profit. Metals are similar to stocks / wheat etc are a commodity that fluctuates in price. The converters contain base metals like steel / aluminium plus rarer metals, this adds another layer of price complexity.

    @ebikescrapper3925@ebikescrapper3925 Жыл бұрын
  • Thanks for delving deeper into this. Kind of like dental scrap for me. Sure someone can come in a weigh the metal crowns and estimate (guess) it’s value and pay cash, but I prefer to send it in to a reputable place in batches that melts and assays the content. They pay on the value of Au, Pt, Pd, Ag. Minus a small percent of the value for a processing/lab fee which is fair.

  • I was told by my shop..when I bring my end of life truck to scrap yard to cut off the catalytic converter. Makes sense... But who knows in the end when where how I get it sold to a recycler?! More research on my end. But I was told it's well worth it when the person picking up my *scrap* is making double+ on just the scrap. Having that extra piece left on is icing on the cake lol

  • Here in Australia there's a company in northern territory will buy look at but only in a 44-gallon drum. They want you to cut and remove the catalyst. You send them the barrel and they crush it up and assess it and give you a price.

  • Nice video. I have been buying junk cars specifically for their converters for about 4 years now. If you know what you're looking for doing so can be extremely profitable. When prices were at their peak you could easily make more money buying a couple junkers a week than working a full time job. It was insane.

  • Diesel particulate filters are also worth money, depending on all the variables. AND, they aren’t regulated like cats. So no problem selling them as is. I’d say they are worth 60-25% of what the same size cat is worth. YMMV, of course.

    • You’re the second person to suggest that actually. I like the idea, I’ll try to make that happen on the next one. In fairness to me though, I’m a one-man show still and these take a lot of time so that’s more challenging than you might realize

      @thubprint@thubprint Жыл бұрын
    • @@thubprint I hear you-I edit videos at work, and you must spend many hours shooting and editing each week, especially the sponsor videos with such high production value. For those weeks, what about a scrapping one-take video concept that’s a quick shoot/edit, possibly shorter than usual? Like 10 minutes of continuous, real-time stripping wires and cleaning copper where you reminisce off the cuff about the coolest copper finds or tell us how you came to bottle picking and scrapping while you work? Or livestream from the shop and take questions

There IS a lot of theft in this business 😂 the buyers (recycling center) being ONE OF THE BIGGEST THIEFS- but I’ve NEVER stolen ONE OUNCE of metal - hell, I even WASH OUT my pop cans 😂 but NOT EVERY person who recycles is a piece of trash
