Harry Leslie Smith, the political commentator and defender of social democracy, has died aged 95. In 2014, the activist for the poor spoke at the Labour party conference in Manchester to reaffirm his support for the NHS. He devoted his final years to highlighting the plight of refugees and visiting camps across Europe

  • An outstanding speech. Tragically, 5 years later, England showed what its real priorities were.. Just as well Harry never lived to see what a shocking mess it's all become in 2023.

  • Jonny Host Thanks for providing clarity!. In front of that large an audience it can be a huge gamble to speak without a prepared speech. It also risks being much less engaging a presentation for the audience if one starts meandering by not being clearly focussed... although, as you point out, the benefit of speaking directly from the heart, like authenticity and spontaneity, may be lost.

  • We must NEVER forget this BRILLIANT speech; and what the Conservatives and "New" Labour have been attempting to do, in they continuous undermining of the NHS and welfare system! We need to go back to True Labour's roots as a truly socialist party and Government .
