Escape the Ordinary with the Unsinkable Skiff! The Ultimate Car-Topable Boat for Adventures!
This week: Laminated FOILS!!
Time to shape the foils blanks I glued a couple of weeks back. A well shaped foil makes all the difference to boat performance so time spent on this task is a must! Also managed to glass the shaped foils.
Glassed the tips of the spars too, to prevent splitting/cracking.
Got the hollow box mast almost finished as well as the hollow boom.

  • Thanks for this… I’ve seen so many builds gloss over the spars and foils part of the build, so it’s great to see you cover this in detail.

  • Hi Teo, thanks for another great video - I will be watching this one a few times in the next month or so as I start on my foils. I got my Goat sailing yesterday in very light winds with an old centreboard and rudder system from another build. The boat felt great and I will be getting out as much as possible in the next few weeks to get more experience. Now that the boat is out of my garage, I have room to get on with the foils.

  • Great job. A tip for shaping foils is to mark parallel lines from top to bottom on the sides. On these lines cut, with a circular saw, almost to the depth of the foil shape you drew on the ends. This gives you a guide for your shaping. Once the cuts are gone start using sandpaper on a block.

    • I think I might finish it in around 160h

  • It's sobering to see that this build will take you around 160 hours (despite your methodical and seemingly quick work). I keep thinking overly optimistic things about build times for various boats (and had convinced myself that this one might take me, a very slow builder, only 50 hours - lol; maybe 250). Storer himself mentions in the manual that people were able to build the boat in 3 days from kits that were prepped over a week. Obviously he's had a hand in building tens if not hundreds and has streamlined the process, though, and I bet they were optimizing for speed of assembly and/or cost at the expense of build quality. Realistically, though, I've spent way more than 160 hours reading about various sailboat designs. It's still a great use of time for someone who will sail it!

    • I'm not a professional but I am quite familiar with my tools and to be honest I believe most ppl will take the 160hours to build this boat if you want half decent finish on the boat. They build it really fast because they get a group of people to build each boat. Also I don't think in those specific cases they bother with several coats of primer/paint/varnish etc... I have spent considerably longer reading and watching videos of boats too! 😁 Cheers, Teo

  • I have often wondered if it makes sense to only shape the dagger board where it protrudes through the slot. That way would would have less drag caused by water flowing up and in the gap between the foil shaped daggerboard and the square shaped slot.

    @leemelbourne3297@leemelbourne3297Ай бұрын
    • I thought of shaping only in that area too but using this method of planning parallel to the edges would be trickier.

  • It is coming along Teo! I wonder, could you use a tiny drill to just pierce the bubbles on your foil and fill with resin using a needle applicator. I seem to remember seeing this done somewhere on KZhead.

    • I poked them with a blade and worked epoxy with my finger around the bobbles, it did end up "good enough" 😅

  • Hey Teo, I've got to make a new rudder and centerboard for my pastinaca! Was wondering how much does the fibreglass increase the thickness of the board? Example, I have an 18mm centerboard slot, what thickness board pre fibreglass would be good?

    @andyjohnson4485@andyjohnson4485Ай бұрын
    • Hi Andy, I think if you use 240g cloth on both sides it will add less than 1mm. Make a small piece of 15mm board, glass it , paint it and try it.

    • I'm thinking of changing from marine ply to the way you've done it. They have a touch of class. Cheers Teo, it's a ball park figure I can start with!

      @andyjohnson4485@andyjohnson4485Ай бұрын
    • @@andyjohnson4485 usually plywood boards aren't as strong since half the layers have the grain in the wrong direction, unless cut at 45degrees.
