  • Nice job. For your information, you shouldn't have sanded the outside of the transformer. The laminations are insulated from each other to prevent eddied currents in the core and unnecessary heating. By sanding them off they are all most likely shorted together. This is the reason you never see a cast single piece transformer core. It would be cheaper to make then this way, but they wouldn't work very well. Drilling and tapping the cores is also not a good idea. Think about it this way: the current flowing the the transformer core is current that could have been flowing through your wires.

    @DudleyToolwright@DudleyToolwright2 жыл бұрын
    • but the microwave transformers are usually welded together, probably because it's cheaper even though it's less eficient

      @l0k048@l0k048 Жыл бұрын
    • That's only on the surface where they are sanded, so internally there will be little eddy current. Should be ok. It will be noticeable in excessive heat in the core if there's too much eddy current. Nicely pointed out there, it shows you have good observational skills.

  • One improvement I can see for this, is to have a foot release to free both hands, and not have someone else to open the jaws. Started making one a while ago, but the vids then, had you grind the transformer apart to remove the coil in one go. This way is so much better, as I don't have to work out how to reassemble the transformer casings.

    • Mine is made with the same principle. I added a foot pedal ( dirt cheap from China) and a relay. It's in plastic housing, though as I don't like the idea of 220 VAC and a secondary with 150-200 A in a metal housing. Works flawless... :)
