A history of friendship...

... and a history of DANGER!
In the 1920s and 1930s, Canada and the United States both developed secret pre-emptive attack plans for… each other.
Canada called their plan “Defense Scheme No. 1,” and the U.S. called their plan “War Plan Red.” Both were created for the possibility of a hypothetical war between the States and Great Britain.
In 1928, Canada terminated their plan in order to pursue peaceful U.S.-British relations, and many of the associated documents were destroyed. The U.S. discontinued their planNING in 1939 with World War II looming, although they never discarded the plan itself…

  • Good thing this would NEVER happen because there is NO WAY... that America would survive the apologetic guilt trip Canada would throw at him. 🤣 But do you guys know of any other countries who, despite an long-time ongoing friendship or alliance, almost (or DID!) end up becoming enemies???

    • The US and China, sadly. Before 1949, the Republic of China and the US at least had a trade relationship going back decades, and they were staunch allies during World War II (it's partially why Japan was so furious with us, for giving the Chinese diplomatic support against them in the 30s). Mao's Communist victory changed everything, and sadly it looks like we'll be enemies for the foreseeable future.

It was a horribly tragic incident near Alaska where both Canadian and US soldiers panicked thinking each other was an invading Japanese force (blinding fog may have played a role IIRC). Both sides immediately took steps to ensure that such a terrible mistake would not be repeated.

And for a good 40 years post ww2 our alliance almost by itself kept Russia in check. Russia had a fear of Canada post ww2. Even America got a bit paranoid which tbf I can't blame them they did kinda get a first hand account at our other side. But we tend to view you guys as your brothers and sisters as well. And ill go make my own country!", where as Canada was the dutiful son and stayed loyal, they even got a few licks in for the old man in the form of burning a certain house down. This is why I'd like to say rest in peace in advance for Canada, because once that happens, the USA is undeniably going to make Canada undesirable for tourists from the outside world, with your own downsides as mentioned above, this is going to be yet another hideous crimes from you Americans and I hope you suffer for it >:(
