00:00 1960s Menswear Introduction
The 1960s was host to a plethora of different subcultures and fashion icons, most famously The Peacock Revolution. Men were freely expressing their artistic nature and their individuality through their eye-catching fashion choices.
02:22 Fashion Fads of the 1960s
Individual freedom was being held under the spotlight and challenged. Because of this, there was no longer a real uniform of dress anymore, and most people wore whatever they wanted to. Here is a brief rundown of some of the fashion fads in the 1960s:
03:06 Mod Style
04:20 Bohemia/Flower Power
04:45 Greasers
05:11 Skins ("Hard Mods")
06:20 Space Age
As we are here to focus on what the average, regular man was wearing with a focus on classic menswear.
06:48 Hair & Facial Hair
The hairstyles were very 1950s inspired and quite normal by today’s standards. As far as facial hair was concerned, most men were clean-shaven, aside from those who liked to wear sideburns or beards.
07:50 Hats
Hat wearing wasn’t as popular as it once was anymore. This was the decade that JFK famously went hatless when giving his speech at his inauguration. However, men were still wearing hats!
Whilst hats were very similar to those of the 1950s, they were growing increasingly smaller with narrower brims and shallower crowns.
Hats were created in an array of different fabrics, and colors, including plaids, two-tones, cotton, herringbones, tweeds, and even leather and suede.
09:36 Shirts
Shirts in the 1960s were wild, to say the least. Men were wearing much more vibrant and brighter colors than before. These shirts could come in..any pattern you can think of.
11:37 Suits & Jackets
Early 1960s
Business suits were surprisingly conservative. The suit was characterized by a three-button jacket with a rounded front, and a high gorge line, as in the popular Italian style.
Mid 60s: The Peacock Revolution
Men's clothing began to become more effeminate, blurring the lines between the genders & taking on a more unisex style.
Late 60s: Historical Revival
A great interest in antique and vintage fashions as a way to see what was already lying around instead of chasing the "next new thing". The true beginning of the ‘vintage fashion’ trend that still persists today.
16:20 Pants
Trousers are famously tight-fitting, especially on the upper leg & hip areas. Pleats were no longer on-trend. The biggest trend at the time was bell-bottom trousers.
18:08 Ties
The first half of the 1960s saw very skinny neckties, which were often knitted. During the Peacock Revolution ties went wild; explode with color, crazy geometric patterns, and other imagery.
20:06 Shoe Styles - 1. Chelsea boots
21:33 2. Cuban Heel
Other shoes of note in the era were monk strap shoes, suede shoes, sneakers, Cowboy boots, and loafers with little tassels.
22:47 Conclusion
The 1960s really saw the explosion of subcultures, rebel youths, and polarised fashion ideas & styles. There were a lot of really wild styles, especially after the Peacock revolution that saw big hair, bright colors, and psychedelic patterns like never before.

  • The 60s is my particular area of interest, and this is an unbelievably well researched video. This is a very respectful, fair and accurate account of the 60s and I'm glad that you managed to capture how ridiculously quickly culture changed in the mid 60s. I kind of wish you spent more time on hair and the popularity of long hair, sideburns and moustaches. I think that was a really huge change and it's still a pretty unusual in the last 100 years that all the big celebrities had long hair, super long sideburns and a beard or moustache. Mad Men captured the feeling very well of the advertising industry and older professionals really being aware of the massive amount of baby boomers and the power they would have over society and the changes they would create in just a couple of years

    • My college had a copy of every one of their yearbooks at the library. Comparing 1963 to 1973 is absolutely unreal. There is no bigger and quicker change in styles for any other ten year span in American history. In 1963 students still primarily dressed in suits - you'd rarely see anything more casual than chinos and an OCBD. Every man had short hair and was clean shaven. In 1973, almost all students had much longer hair, facial hair was widespread, and you'd be hard pressed to find a single student wearing a suit. Jeans and t-shirts were already the norm.

  • Great series. Would love to see you continue it into the 70s, 80s, 90s all the way to the present. Even if those decades aren't "classic", classic style somehow survived through them, and the full history would help understand the current style landscape.

  • I love Gentlemans Gazette, Great job with this. I think after WW2 most 20 yr olds were not wearing the hat so much anymore but their father's ,who were young in the 1930-1940's continued on. Some till they passed away. My grandfather was like that. I myself love men's dresswear and appreciate this channel very much. Thank's for the upload.

Would you be interested in doing a series on the outfits from Doctor Who, for the show's 60th Anniversary next year? The collegiate look that you touched on also impacted Mod. Bass Weejuns, Harrington jackets, chinos and JFK hairstyles survive today. Cheers. Well done.

I bought a pair of black 063 dress Blundstone boots because they were the closest I could find today to the chelseas of the 60s. I even started wearing high-hemmed straight-legged Carhart pants with them, so far in burgundy or olive. I'm a straight man, but I love Andy Warhol and his Sixties style too. Heck, I might try to find something like Cuban heels. I believe that stuff is going to come back. We've already seen skinny jeans. I could see it happening in more cosmopolitan cities/areas though, LA, New York... I'm in a not so fashion conscious area currently. It can be awkward for me to stand out sometimes, but I'm pretty brave.

I had just been reading an article about how austere conditions were in Communist East Berlin. My Beatle Boots were branded as "Watusi" by , I believe, Florsheim. One unforgettable trend was the prints in oversized polka dots, mostly in men's shirts and women's dresses.

  • Does anyone know, the proper name of spiral-like scrunchies/rubber bands worn on shirts, around the upper arm area. It was used for sleeves that may have been too long and kept the sleeves in place with these metal contraptions. Basically, instead of altering the sleeve to make it shorter, these contraptions kept the sleeves at an appropriate length of the wearer. Do they still produce these? Where to find them? Thank you, in advance. Regards.
