This thing has really changed how I look at gaming now. I want to play everything with it, and I nearly can!

I really like this, but even mine is starting to fail. I can't believe that during the whole time I was filming I didn't record it happening but mine is exhibiting the random black screen issue. I don't know for sure that it is related to the EEPROM that prevents it from turning on, but I suspect so.
More info on the problem and repairing it can be found here if you want to learn more:

I will be repairing mine so that will be coming up here some time.

    • I owned one and they were notorious for having high failure rates, which is why they never took off. Mine was no exception, it got returned almost immediately due to constant input failure with regular 2D games. My friend gave me his defective one as well, which I still own and sometimes works, but usually doesn't. The things were just cheaply made and just burned out. And yes, the first thing I said when I bought it was, it was a nice mirror from Sony.

  • I played Uncharted 3 entirely on 3D when it came out. It was one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. It's just unbelievable the way people ignored and even got angry at this attempt on 3D gaming. We should have had more of these. PS: Enslaved was also great!

    • Its weird how some people got SO angry over a optional feature.

      @sonicsnake44@sonicsnake442 жыл бұрын
    • People got angry because they're fucking sheep, all the articles would do backhanded compliments towards 3D via passive aggressive quotes like: "While you need to don those dorky glasses, the effect is rather interesting". Obviously people would internalize that and not even enjoy the experience because they became too self conscious, then they'd pile on those myths over "headaches", "cash grab", "gimmick"... the narrative was stacked against 3D... in English speaking countries mind you. Since these talking points didn't translate from English to other languages, everywhere else that didn't speak English, they loved 3D and adopted it immediately. But since America sets the trend, Japanese and Korean manufacturers stopped supporting 3D because 'Murica.

    @chlo_z7566@chlo_z75664 жыл бұрын
    • You can do this with any 3d passive tv. Put the 3d mode as the same as how the 2 player is split (either horizontal or vertical). You can either buy the glasses designed to 2 player full screen or cut out one of the lenses out of 2 glasses and paste it on the other glasses. Boom, 2 player full screen on any game.

  • Lmao, this used to be my daily driver for over a year when i switched to PC EDIT: Just got done watching the video, and i 100% agree with what you said, but i think it made a fairly decent PC monitor. If you could look past the ghosting and sharpness. I remember i had long broken my 3D glasses way before PC gaming was a shine in my Eye. Before i was going to replace the monitor for a shiny new true 144hz display i decided to order some new 3d glasses for the TV. After a bit of finicking around with Nvidia drivers and settings, i was able to get it working. And the 3D effect it produced was amazing. I played on a 1070ti so it was hauling really well and never any dips in frames. I tried many demos and such, but the only game i ever got to work natively was Overwatch, to my surprise. It was just a game that was compatible with the 3D vision/drivers of nvidia, i found it on a list somewhere. So i tried it, and it was incredible. Reminded me of playing Tron legacy but smooth af and the depth was great. Nostalgia aside, this monitor had many shortcomings, but it did what it set out to do well.

  • I've owned one for a couple years and use it as my main PS4 display as well as a secondary PC display. To be honest, I haven't noticed any issues with ghosting/motion/smooth scrolling on it, the colors are probably the best out of any screen I've used (and while my own have always been modest, I've used some quality panels) and it's just such a good size for a screen that's meant to be sitting fairly close to you rather than mounted on a wall a few meters away. I don't even own the glasses as mine came with just the panel haphazardly strapped between two pieces of styrofoam, but I've been low key looking for a second one of these and I'll definitely grab one if I see a complete set. I've also seen sets of three of these mounted vertically side by side to create a larger display, though the side bars on them are a little wide for that solution in my personal opinion.

I kind of like passive 3d a bit more then active but, that's really up to personal preference. That reshade program seems really useful as I've been having a heck of a time getting tridef working and, not just crashing after I run a game for 5 minutes.

  • Very interesting! I absolutely love 3D (and VR - like you, I don't see them as competitors) and I've been very sad to see its decline in recent years. I'll continue using my current 3D TV to watch 3D movies until the tech breaks, then I guess it's off to eBay or something because I don't see why I'd ever want to see a movie in 2D if it's available in 3D. To me, it's just such a leap forward, SO much more immersive. I've been looking for a decent 3D-capable computer monitor. Too bad this doesn't seem to be it either. I don't want to get something with 3D-vision; 1) because proprietary and, as shown here, it's sensitive to Nvidia losing interest, 2) because I just don't like shutter glasses in general. I've never tried a pair that worked well for me. Polarized glasses work a lot better for me, better sense of continuity in the image. And also cheaper and easier to replace, of course.

    • I'd advice you to go get an extra 3d tv now while they're affordable. The more expensive models like the big LG passive ones, forget about it, they're gone before you see them and they're expensive. Prices will only go up as there are fewer and fewer displays left, even more so when the last 2020 3d monitors are gone as well.

    • @@thespearofthor9629 Currently, I'm mostly thinking I'll replace my 3D TV with just watching 3D movies in VR when it finally gives up. I already watch a lot of movies on various services through Virtual Desktop on my Quest 2, and the cinema-like experience almost makes up for the not-quite-there-yet pixel density. Give it a few years and the resolution will be there, and in a virtual theater there's no reason each eye can't be shown a different image.

  • Awesome video. I bought a 3d tv years ago and a vr headset also. I gotta say one thing I miss about 3d tv was the simplicity of it. Putting on my headset feels like a chore now. You can use your vr headset to play any 3d games on a virtual screen in 3d as apposed to only playing VR games with it and this does work really well. But I would personally rather use a 3d tv for this. And your definitely right about emulation working well for 3d. Some of the best 3d games I played was using dolphin and if you like rpgs xenoblade chronicles looked fantastic in 3d.

    • 3d movies in theaters always did strong. Usually at a ratio of 60% regular screening 40% 3d screening. It's just that only high end tvs had 3d while budget tvs nixed it to cut costs. If only it was a standard to be included, the way that every tv now is a smart tv. Also cost of 3d blurays was usually $30 because it included bluray, DVD, and digital as well. But it is nice having them all. DVDs however really not needed. Even so digital retailers like VUDU, apple, sony, google should have had rentable 3d versions. While I only know of VUDU selling 3d movies digitally and it unfortunately did not include the regular HD version which was sold separately...both at a high price. Normally if you rent a 4k movie now or buy one, you get HD and SD. Essentially every tier below. Games were great. I played Uncharted 3 and it gave it so much depth. It was like looking through a window. Even in movies. I dont care for pop put effects. Some are nifty and magical. But depth to me was the best part of 3d.

  • The best 3D display these days is a modern VR headset. The Oculus Quest, Rift S and Valve Index all comfortably render 720p-ish virtual displays without the drawbacks to brightness, pixel response and refresh rate and are still actively supported hardware.

    @deanlillie7140@deanlillie71404 жыл бұрын
    • As an Index owner I'd say you still don't really get 720p quality. The only HMD that I know of that approaches that level of virtual resolution is the HP Reverb. There's some other drawbacks like godrays and comfort too. For as comfortable as I find my Index it still obviously gonna weigh more and be less comfortable than a pair of glasses. On the positive side it doesn't have the drawbacks you mentioned plus the 3D effect will always be perfect and you don't need to find a sweet spot like you would with glasses.

      @mikec2845@mikec28454 жыл бұрын
    • @@AndyAndyAndy11111 It depends on how far away/large the virtual display is. 720p is easily discernible at a reasonable size, though maybe not sized as a virtual monitor on a virtual desk. Even a 1080p desktop is usable, I regularly use Virtual Desktop on my Quest at that res though it can be a bit difficult to read very small text if there's not much contrast. I comfortably played Disco Elysium in bed for hours with my Quest using VD, the virtual display roughly positioned where my ceiling is.
