  • As an Irish student, it still baffles me that there are tests where all the subjects are packed into one 5 - 10 hour paper and the examinable material seems to be mostly based on memory. It seems like it's more of a test of your stamina than anything. Does anyone think this is helpful for the students in an educational sense? I'd love to hear somebody else's opinion on this.

    @googane7755@googane77552 жыл бұрын
    • Not helpful at all, out here you are mostly teached to pass an exam, and not to learn something, that is a problem in itself, and most of the times, it is encouraged by the school. That way, most people leave high school knowing only the basics (maybe not even that) and for sufficient time to do this exam, forgetting things afterwards. Also, in my opinion, these types of tests don't evaluate knowledge efficiently the more they make you get tired, and the less time you are given. ENEM, for example, is perceived as one of the easiest tests content-wise, but due to the nature of the exam, the measure of how much you know is impaired by external factors, as rush/hurry and fatigue.

  • As a brazilian student, i should add to the video that: in order to get the best grades in ENEM you must focus on getting the easiest questions correctly, because there's a system that tracks how many easy questions you got right and the amount of hard questions you got right, so basically, your right answers will be worth less and less points if you get many hard questions right and fewer easy questions right cause the system will 'think' you're just guessing the answers randomly. • Hey, brazillian survivor of the "process" (nice analogy, btw) here. I wanted to share a couple of things about the exam. First thing is that in the first day of the exam, in which we take Languages and Social Sciences, we are also supposed to write an essay (within the 5h30min). The second observation is actually my opinion: the exam is not hard, it's painful. ENEM doesn't test your knowledge, only how many right squares you can paint black after smoking your brains out for 5 hours. That's more of a resistance than a smartness test, c'mon. The questions themselves are not always difficult, but it is very easy to make mistakes when you also have other 44 to take with the clock ticking. Just as a reference, through enem I got into UFRJ (one of the best universities in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiro) in 4th place for physics. I'm not, by any means, trying to brag. My point is: I did well and still hated it.

Mas mesmo se for esse o caso, ou seja, mesmo assumindo que avaliação seja eficiente num geral, não vejo sentido algum em avaliar se o cara que quer fazer direito sabe química ou se o cara que vai fazer medicina sabe história. • I did this exam sometimes. The questions (isolated) aren't hard. The difficult comes in the fact that there are 180 of them, requiring a very spread background knowledge. But my real critics to this test is to the industry of courses which this test created. This is a national exam, but generally, the public schools in Brazil don't have the structure to prepare the students to attend to this test. This caused a blown up in popularity of paid schools in Brazil because the only way to pass this exam is doing the courses which these paid schools offer. Add the fact that Brazil is one of the most unequal (it's a rich country, but few people have the money) countries in the world. Only few parents are able to pay these courses to its children, then we know why only 3% pass this exam. I could speak of the problems of this exam for hours, hahaha. I'm undergraduate in physics in Brazil, I studied the education issues of Brazil a lot. The sad part is that this is a good exam in its essence, what turned it in to the dark side was the other problems in Brazil never solved before.

    • It has the additional issue of pressing high schools to become specialized in teaching students how to pass ENEM. Even if teachers keep to their original educational goal, parents might decide to enroll their children in schools geared towards teaching students how to pass ENEM. (Also, it stimulates schools to pursue legal loopholes to inflate their ENEM approval rates. But, anyways, it’s unrelated to the above and more concerning issue.)

Many students take the ENEM test without knowing basic math, unfortunately. Nevertheless, all the pressure about the exam ist that almost every university require your results on ENEM to ingress. Many people can't finish it properly cuz they're simply too nervous To see a really hard exam, I recommend the ITA (Instituto Tecnológico da Aeronáutica - Airforce Technology Institute), the thing is evillish. Since all the courses are in engineering areas, the test is almost purely math and science. It's the hardest national exam, causing chills in anyone just by hearing it lol

  • Thanks, Tibees! Nice video :) I passed ITA, IME, Escola Naval (graduated from ITA) and the point she makes is absolutely valid and true. The question we should ask is not which test is more difficult, but why a fairly easy test (in content) like ENEM has so few students achieving minimum scores. We have to face the reality that, despite ENEM has a lot of problems (including politics influence), it is the best diagnostic of Brazil’s Education for our High School, and since we conditionate many life opportunities to this exam (access public university, find good jobs etc), it is a very important photo of how our population is and how we help them. For instance, ENEM had 6.2MM registers in 2019 (pre pandemic), while ITA had 10k, so this says nothing about Brazil Education, especially because military exams have far less incentives. Many specialists and known professors like Elon Lages (an influential figure in the development of mathematics in Brazil) say that we should not force everyone to study the huge mass of content we do in Brazil. If you take the ENEM exam, it’s easy to see why it is so big and needs 10h to do: there are some things to “test”. Is there so many TRULY IMPORTANT things to test, comparatively? I don’t think so. Why does a 15 year old student already inclined to study arts (as shown in his scores) need to study complex numbers? It didn’t even appear in ENEM before! I tend to agree with them, we should let people be best at what they want, like and have inclinations to, and let them contribute to our country naturally. edit: consequently, many students who pass to public schools come from privileged families indeed (remember, the majority, not the totality), and that applies to the difficul military exams for higher education forementioned as well. Like another famous mathematician (Augusto Morgado) sad in a metaphor: “Mozart would never have become Mozart in Brazil, because his low grades in Chemistry would never let him enter Music University”

  • The Enem, and the SISU system are usually required for Federal Universities, which are free, but can be used to get discounts on private universities, but there's the State and Regional ones that usually require their own tests, with more difficult questions, but less than Enem, so there's more time for each, these ones sometimes have 2 phases, and in some cases the essay is only in the second phase, so only a few do them. It's important to note that most of the Brazilian youth that wishes to pursue a higher education wants to do so in Federal universities, so the competition is higher than that of the others, because you're not competing with people from your town, or from your state, but with millions of Brazilians, and because of that it's pretty hard to get into some of the most popular universities, if I believe correctly to get into medical school in my state's Federal university you needed almost 810 points on Enem, so it can be pretty hard to get into your dream major AND your dream university. The SISU is basically a system that uses your Enem's grade and puts it against others in a list for certain major in certain university, you can only choose 2, so it's like choice one=major(1,2)+university(1,2) choice two: major(2,1)+university(1,2) , you cannot apply for the same major and university twice, only for another major in the same university or the same major at a different university, and it puts you on a list, if your grade can't get the necessary points to get into one choice you still have the other, but of you get approved in one you cannot wait for the other or choose this kne if it's your second option because the system gives priority to the first choice, so you have an week to apply and change your options. Boa sorte a todos que passaram pelo Enem e vão passar pelo SISU!!!

The ENEM requires a LOT of preparation, you have to study everything, especially for an essay of thirty lines on the first day of the test because nobody knows the subject of the essay, and you have to write a dissertation-argument text about the topic that they will reveal on the day of the exam, they analyze each part of the text, if you used a good repertoire, used the Portuguese language cult norm, correct punctuation and how would you solve the problem that the essay gives, everyone has to prepare a lot for this. And the question about football teams has become a topic that has been discussed a lot on the internet here. I still can't take this test because I'm not in high school, but I think I have a chance to succeed, I'm very good at school and my Portuguese teacher always praises my textual productions. Wish me luck! Some unis have free living arrangements although not for everyone. If you qualify as low income you can also receive compensation just on that or help with transportation. Another thing is in public universities the dining halls can often be extremely cheap, as low as 1 real to eat there, and you can pretty much fill your plate as much as you want with the exception of meats which you usually only 1 or 2 portions (depending on the dish), so a lot of students really take advantage of that and fill up! It's definitely still hard for low income students to give their all to their studies but there's certainly a lot of measures in place to help them. The real problem is in the lack of funding on prior public education, because Brazil's public university, even if they don't have the greatest funding, are miles better than many places for struggling students. But because of that most public universities are filled with high income students as they are better equipped to pass the tests to get into them.

  • Hi Tibees! It's great to have commented on the National Secondary Education Examination in Brazil, it is the test most awaited by students who want to pursue an undergraduate degree in a specific area. As I said, they are two tests given on different days that have an essay, and they have questions on natural sciences, mathematics, humanities and languages. The test of natural sciences and mathematics has strategic questions that cover the content covered during the three years of high school, there are a total of one hundred and eighty questions, with extensive statements and some interpretation "gotchas", which requires attention and acumen to the take the test. Here in Brazil we usually have less difficulty with ENEM than with other tests at federal universities.

  • I attended ENEM in 2015. In that time the strategy that my teachers and my friends taught me is that ENEM is especially about time managment so the best way to answer the questions is to ready the question first, not the texts. This way you already start knowing what really the question is looking for and then you look for it in the text or in the graphics. Other quite important thing is to already know or at least to have an idea of what course you wanna attend because different courses in different universities have different values for the areas that ENEM envolve so when the student know what course they want then they know the questions that they have to prioritize.

  • Hey, Tibees, great video. I recommend you take a look at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, ITA) exam, it is, simply put, amazing. The absolute best students from Brazil take it every year and, usually, it has an 1 in 100 acceptance rate. It's specific for engineering courses and it covers Math, Physics, Chemistry and Languages. It's divided in 2 phases, where only 550 (from about 10000) manage to get to the 2nd phase. I really think you would love the physics part of it.

  • Brazilian here! It's important to note that students cannot bring calculators or any cheat sheet containing the formulas necessary for solving the problems. It isn't uncommon for students to bring large water-bottles and something to eat, however going to the bathroom during such an exam is very risky. Good luck holding that bathroom need for 5 hours! ENEM also requires you to read about 100 literature books (Brazilian and foreign literature) and sometimes the question you'll find on the exam is precisely about that one book you didn't read or a book never featured in an exam before (people keep lists!). You're also required to write an entire 1-page essay about some random subject that you probably never heard about (meant to test not only the writing skills but also if the student has been keeping up with local and world news). The correction of this essay varies from excruciatingly scrutinizing on the grammatical and compositional aspects to just plain lazy, you never know who's the poor professor/teacher who's gonna be grading your essay and how many other essays that poor person will be grading per day. And on top of that, of course, you have to choose a foreign language, between english or spanish, to take a test on. Meaning, mostly, only rich students who had access to a decent enough education will be able to get into a university. It gets even sadder when you consider that public universities in Brazil are 100% free and are considered to be better than the ridiculously expensive private universities. It's a shame because the idea behind ENEM is kinda cool. It contains questions and problems about all kinds of knowledge, including philosophy and sociology together with math and text interpretation. ENEM's issues wouldn't be so hard to fix, however the main problem left is inequality, poverty and poor access to free and good basic education for children and teenagers. Exams in Brazil (not only ENEM but so many others) are so difficult that there's a whole bunch of school chains dedicated only to preparing students for those exams. I had a friend who spent 6 years trying again and again to get into a university, and she would take a lot of exams each year, sometimes even on different cities or on the countryside. Fortunately I lucked out and somehow got into a good university without any preparation or expectation, whatsoever. And once you finally get in, good luck actually graduating! A lot of university courses in Brazil are meant to be brutally hard on purpose. I recently graduated in Computer Science after 8 years and a half (but that's another story). (BTW I love your content! 😉)

They have context and the information is sometime hidden in plain sight. Speaking of which, i also like these questions because the information has to be extracted and contextualised. You can't just skim read and answer a simple question. And as you said, you might even learn something. Very very cool, more exams, especially standardised tests, should do this kind of thing.

    • i also like the questions, i did both enem and vestibular (i needed both to enter my college) and while the other only had 5 questions per subject, each question was harder, you actually had to remember formulas instead of figuring out by context, the history and geography questions in enem presents a small article that you have to interpret or some graph, while the other was just remembering that part of the book that talked about that complex subject, with no attachment to a real life situation, i did a preparatory course, and it helped way more with the vestibular than with enem

    • PUC universities here in Brazil have a similar exam, where courses are assigned groups based on their area of knowledge. All candidates do the same objective test covering all high school subjects and two written tests based on their desired course: math/physics for Engineering, biology/chemistry for Med School, and so on. The candidates also have the option of choosing between english or french for the foreign language part of the tests. Except for the foreign language bit, I believe the FUVEST exam is structured in a similar way.

  • I've done ENEM a few times and it is indeed cruel. A lot of times it comes down to your stamina and psychological stability while doing it. It is important to point that you don't do well in the exam by just answering more questions correctly. The exam has what we call "TRI", a mechanism to prevent students from guessing the right answers and to show that they actually knew it. Easy questions (the ones students got right the most) are actually "worth" more points. Also, in the first day of the exam you have to write an essay about some political/social problem besides the language and social science questions. Amazing content as always, Tibees!

    @8maylon@8maylon2 жыл бұрын
  • your video is amazing! I'd like to add just about the essay we have to write a very specific type of text with tons of rules. we don't know nothing about the subject (could be literally ANYTHING seriously is so random) it's definitely the hardest part of the exam because you have to read the texts of the theme, think about what to write with the subject, think about what people can do to solve the problem, follow all formal grammar rules (in Portuguese is so many), follow the essay rules (a looot too) and all that in an hour. the essay is so important and difficult that is 50% of your final grade and the 180 questions are the others 50%. your analysis about the serie and the exam is totally correct. this exam is the only way we can get into college without paying for it, in the public ones. in brazil many jobs require higher education, so if you want have a nice job you have to go to college. should be something good for the poor population but we have to compete with the privileged people because public colleges are the best ones in brazil, were the best teachers for superior education are and of course the big majority of poor population don't make it because people with money are more prepared for the exam since they had better education in school. so... yeah is kinda horrible specially for our mental health
