What It Takes to Fly The $340 Million C-17 Globemaster III | Boot Camp
One of the biggest cargo planes in the world, the C-17 Globemaster III has a payload capacity of 172,000 pounds. The massive plane is used in a variety of missions, including evacuation efforts and troop transport in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021. This aircraft requires only three crew members to fly: a pilot, a copilot, and a loadmaster. Insider spent three days at Travis Air Force Base, where we observed the training required to fly these giant $340 million feats of engineering. That training included mastering the flight simulator, planning the proper execution of a mission, and then putting that mission into action with an instructor pilot and performing it in the sky.
In a previous version of this video, our voiceover incorrectly stated that the C-17's maximum payload is 585,000 pounds. That number refers to the aircraft's maximum takeoff weight. We regret the error.

The one thing I'd like to see added to videos like this is recognition of all the people who keep these planes moving. For every pilot, there are several people working on the planes, fueling them, etc.
As an aircraft mechanic for an airline, we are used to not being recognized, but I do appreciate this comment.
@@jw3133 Everyone thinks of soldiers and tanks and planes when they think of the military, but I bet that soldiers comprise only 10% of the force, with the vast majority being mechanics, office staff, cooks, accountants, etc. One could argue that mechanics are at least as important to keeping people alive in planes as pilots are. More so even, as pilots have to deal with problems once they occur, but mechanics can cause problems directly if they do something wrong. And pilots have various computer systems that make their job easier and safer, but no computer is going to turn your wrenches.
because your typical high school kid surfing KZhead more interested in flying than turning wrenches or pumping gas. but you’re right, the support functions deserve a lot more credit and visibility.
I accumulated thousands of flight hours in C-141s and C-5s. I could not have done that without all the professional efforts of the vast network of warriors in maintenance, supply, admin, etc. For that I am grateful, and wish the current warriors success and safety.

It's already iconic...
@DON'T alright I won’t.
I was proud to be an engineer on the C-17. Initially, we really screwed it up, but we turned it around and provided the taxpayers with a great airplane. It exceeded all of the USAF requirements. It can land, unload and take off in minutes. It can backup with a full load on a 3 % grade. It can takeoff and land in less distance than a C-130 but carries three times the payload. I designed the cargo lighting installation. See those fluorescent lights in the cargo bay.
How will the taxpayers benefit from it?
@@siloemascolo2769 they do not
@@siloemascolo2769 Taxpayers pay for weapons systems. The US military tells the legislators their strategic needs. Budgets get approved and bids are put out. Products are designed, tested and delivered. In the past, many of these projects failed in terms of cost, quality and performance. Billions in cost overruns, the product doesn’t meet the original requirements. The C5 cargo jet never fulfilled its original capabilities and cost billions extra. Taxpayers get fleeced when this happens. Taxpayers are not the end users, but they “own” this stuff and it should work as planned. One could make the same case for other tax funded things like schools. Nearly all big city school systems fail at this.
The interior lighting is great! I was a crew chief on C-17's for ten years and a flying crew chief for 4 years before getting hurt. C-17's fell short in cruise speed, fuel consumption and maintience hours per flight hours, they didnt exceed every requirement. Its still an awesome aircraft, but it was over sold and under delivered in many aspects of cost and maintience.
@@lsxpowertuning Thx! I know that maintenance costs go up as years went on, but that’s normal as they age. I’ll take your word on fuel consumption. I was there for first flight in 1995 and moved onto another job.

Great to see the crew and aircraft perform so well! It was fun for me to hear the aircraft's warning messages too, since I helped design it back in the late 80's! I'm sure my design has been replaced once or twice since then, but it's always good to know that your work has been useful.
There’s an army base by my house and these planes fly over my house all the time. They’re loud. Got to see inside of one when I was a kid, very cool! Definitely a lot bigger in person than what you see on the internet.
Great video! I did the same drill about 100 years ago in the C-141. Glad to see a new generation carrying the torch.
Same here.
One of the cool perks of military service is being able (mission permitting) to travel as a passenger on these aircraft. Took my wife for her first visit to the mainland on one of these and it was great. They look so industrial on the inside compared to commercial aircraft and you get the sense you are in the back of a semi truck but you can stretch out and layout a sleeping mat (unless you are in that 800 pax Afghan getaway). It’s a unique and cool way to fly that beats the pants off of the cramped seats of commercial. Wife was very impressed.
Air mobility FTW, I know fast jets are the “Badasses” but C-17’s are great too
I often hear them coming over in Amsterdam. High in the air. I can follow them with flightrader! Beautiful plane 👍

If I had a choice between flying fighters or the C 17, no contest: globe master. You get more hours in a multi engine heavy, which has to make a difference in airline hiring, plus the missions are more interesting and fulfilling.
Plus it’s stick flying, handles pretty great, has a nasty climb rate and stall speed as well as does missions that really matter.
@@JonnyBabyaka I live under the approach to Willow Grove Joint Base (used to be an NAS) and when the ANG squadrons are there for exercises, C17s seem to float like nearly silent whales. I was riding my bike one morning, and “sensed” something behind me, like pressure, looked back, then UP. There it was, barely a sound until it was directly over head, then nothing more than a high pitched whispering sound from the engines. They got this one right. I got to fly in one several times coming back from Iraq. I even got a chance to watch the Loadmaster use the boom to refuel another plane. It was so cool seeing that in person.
Bullshit. You were not in a C-17 if you witnessed an aircrew member using a boom to refuel another plane. The C-17 does not have the capability to refuel another aircraft. On a tanker aircraft (KC-135, KC-10, KC-46, etc.), the aircrew member that manipulates the boom is the boom operator - not a loadmaster.
