What It Takes to Fly The $340 Million C-17 Globemaster III | Boot Camp

One of the biggest cargo planes in the world, the C-17 Globemaster III has a payload capacity of 172,000 pounds. The massive plane is used in a variety of missions, including evacuation efforts and troop transport in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021. This aircraft requires only three crew members to fly: a pilot, a copilot, and a loadmaster. Insider spent three days at Travis Air Force Base, where we observed the training required to fly these giant $340 million feats of engineering. That training included mastering the flight simulator, planning the proper execution of a mission, and then putting that mission into action with an instructor pilot and performing it in the sky.
In a previous version of this video, our voiceover incorrectly stated that the C-17's maximum payload is 585,000 pounds. That number refers to the aircraft's maximum takeoff weight. We regret the error.

More so even, as pilots have to deal with problems once they occur, but mechanics can cause problems directly if they do something wrong. And pilots have various computer systems that make their job easier and safer, but no computer is going to turn your wrenches.

  • I was proud to be an engineer on the C-17. Initially, we really screwed it up, but we turned it around and provided the taxpayers with a great airplane. It exceeded all of the USAF requirements. It can land, unload and take off in minutes. It can backup with a full load on a 3 % grade. It can takeoff and land in less distance than a C-130 but carries three times the payload. I designed the cargo lighting installation. See those fluorescent lights in the cargo bay.

Products are designed, tested and delivered. In the past, many of these projects failed in terms of cost, quality and performance. Billions in cost overruns, the product doesn’t meet the original requirements. The C5 cargo jet never fulfilled its original capabilities and cost billions extra. Taxpayers get fleeced when this happens. Taxpayers are not the end users, but they “own” this stuff and it should work as planned. One could make the same case for other tax funded things like schools. Nearly all big city school systems fail at this.

They look so industrial on the inside compared to commercial aircraft and you get the sense you are in the back of a semi truck but you can stretch out and layout a sleeping mat (unless you are in that 800 pax Afghan getaway). • Bullshit. You were not in a C-17 if you witnessed an aircrew member using a boom to refuel another plane. The C-17 does not have the capability to refuel another aircraft. On a tanker aircraft (KC-135, KC-10, KC-46, etc.), the aircrew member that manipulates the boom is the boom operator - not a loadmaster.
