Viciously Tuned 400 HP Audi S4 | Farewell to the Iconic 4.2L V8
Hey guys! Today we're driving a modified B7 Audi S4 and what's the first thing we noticed?! It sounds AMAZING! With Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2L V8 under the hood and a Milltek catback exhaust system, this modified S4 is one of the most angry sedans we've ever driven on the show. The owner has made changes to the suspension in the form of coilovers as well as a set of brakes from an RS4. If I didn't have a thing for good fuel economy, I would totally have this as a daily! Enjoy.

Love the video, but I'd beg to differ... I have a modified B7 RS4 that you can drive if you're ever in the Denver Area (; I have a few videos on my page.. Also the engine is NOT the same as the R8 and RS4. The S4 doesn't have forged internals and has a timing chain problem unlike the R8 and RS4.
Thank you for lisen to me haha but i whant to se you test audi s4/rs4 b5 biturbo 6 cylinder :)

God damn that exhaust sounds unbelievable. Whenever I see one of the older S4/RS4 or S5/RS5's on the road they always catch my eye. Very nice review!
Lol Same, That's what made me buy my s4, It's also frickin yellow. So I'm just a cop magnet now.
Don't forget the c5 allroad
Every time I start getting down on my car because of it being dirty or whatever the case I always come back and watch this video and remind myself that I have a pretty bad ass S4 Audi with a 4.2 L V8 and it still only has 65k original miles and the paint/body is in perfect condition. Then I smile and it makes me want to go take her to get detailed. 🤣
NA V8 + a sedan + man tran ... what more could you ever want
rear. wheel. drive.
@@mannyfox8089 Where I live, RWD won't due in the winter.
avant (wagon).
Lightweight is what you want over all of those things you mentioned except maybe the manual transmission.
for me? no malfunction lights is a must
Loved the video!!!! Glad you liked the S4, looking forward to making more videos with you.
Where did you get the intake from? Do you have the link?
I love those 4.2 liters engine! Had an old S6 fow a while and the v8 was sooo nice! But the Audi S6 C6 has a 5.2 litre v10, would fun if you check that out! ;)
I have the exact car never seen a winter road in Canada and with the borlo exhaust and 6 speed standard morgello blue ,it's a Quattro as well with the full Blk leather Recaro seat's. We're all smiles every beautiful day it comes out of our garage.
0:07 I love the sound of that bike passing by.
If you find one, I suggest you make a video of the Passat W8. It isn't exactly fast, but the sound of that engine is it's high-point. It's just breathtaking..
I have an 05 s4 avant 6speed in arctic white with resonator and mufflers deleted...sounds amazing.
Love the reaction when I tell them it's a v8.. tuned.
Very well done on the video and the sound. Lovely car and video
That sound is sick for sure. I am in the process of unloading and stripping down my Stage 2 15 WRX in search of a 2012 S4, i wanna drive one for a couple years before going electric. I have considered an 08 S4 B7 but due to amount of driving I do and concern over expensive maintenance I am just not willing to take the gamble as I know stock will just not be good enough for me after seeing and hearing this video lol
awsome car , thanks for this vidéo man
Just got my new motor and ordered all my parts ready to bring the beast back out this summer
Used to have a 4.2 S4 and loved it. Solid car and total tank in the winter! Side note the 812 is still Naturally aspirated but I agree, will definitely miss the big na motors of past.
Best winter car ever man
Elo. Thanks to you, now I always do between gas after reduction. Holy movie. I'm just waiting for the exhaut to expose ten between the gas.
•love showin off my pipes when i'm around any american v8•always catches people off guard•
I have an S4, and have never noticed it being nose heavy. I had my exhaust done and it sounds just like this. It does drone in the car at certain revs, but I love it. Mine has 122,000 ks. Yep, I do think about that timing chain from time to time. And in all, I love the way the S4 drives. I enjoy it every time I get in the car. I don't the looks I get with my XR8 ute, but it drives so much better.
Hi what did you have done? Im thinking of doing my exhaust soon.
7:53 I feel you there!!!!!!
I would love to know what setup this has between the cat back and the cylinder heads, it it stock???
When the audi r8 v8 was introduced in 2008 the 4.2 v8 had a different timing chain layout so it had duel row timing chains so they fix the timing chain issue the old v8s had just had to clear that up but great vid man loved it. but the 4.2 in the r8 is very reliable
The issue was more in the tensioners/plastic guides than the chain but yea I agree, the 4.2 in the r8 and rs4 b7 are very reliable, especially when compared to the b6/b7 s4.
ughh after watching this i wish i had not sold mine, loved the sound
Spot on with the review. This was my old car. Yes I wanted it to look like an RS4...prob wouldve kept it but going thru a litre of oil every 800km told me to parts ways. lol. Wheels are from a Audi TTRS et52 powder coated black, front brakes from a 2013 Audi S4. Full milltek exhaust, H&R coils... glad it went to a good home :)
Why didn’t he specify that the cars making 380 crank not wheel hp that’s a big factor sounds a lot faster than it is. Also that air intake isn’t actually bringing in cold air until the auxiliary radiation is deleted. Looks cool though.
What kind of tune did you have on it to produce that power?
@@MR.Icanfixit can you explain what auxiliary radiation is and how to delete
4:17 "OH MY GAWWD" :-D
music at 0:35 made me feel like i was in the loading screen of a Video game or some shit.
Damn! Makes me want to rebuild mine. Snapped timing chain.
Dammmn thats on hell of a sexy s4 man that noise the v8 produces is pure joy and happiness 🤤🤤
I have one too, love it, but you are wrong. not the same engine as the rs4 / R8. different internals, different cylinder head, timing, cooling, intake, injection etc
anjeroxjp same block, not exact engine
Still wrong, blocks are not the same. Not interchangeable. I found that one out the long and hard way
Lol, but the 42 was an opt for Gen1s
How has the car treated you maintenance wise? I’m thinking about picking up a 08 model with 94k on it.
Demeil Jacobs I have an 07 with 132k its a blast to drive just make sure timing was done with upgraded guides. Mine burns some oil so just be careful and see how much it burns if at all
I own a B7 A4 with the 2.0T, its great to see another B7 getting some show time lol
devin roopchand I own b6 1.8t
Absolutely not the same thing at all
Marcus ur the Best!!!
0:37 how much did it cost to powder coat the wheels black or darker like that? I have those exact same wheels on my 2006 Audi S4 and they would look even more legit if they were jet black instead of the stock silver color.
the interior in my 05 S4 is still minty fresh as well, and it has over 150,000 miles on it!
Have you replaced the timing chain? Just curious!
Nice. Was curious bout this car since one totally hung with my 15 tuned mustang gt today.
Surprised it dead destroy your stang lol...
My dad has a 4.2L S4 to. I'll tell ya there pure dacent for diffin in snow. I will post a vid tomorrow of it drifting in the snow👌
I cant believe I haven't seen this video. I have a 05 S4, I can't believe the difference in Sport mode. It feels awesome. If I was younger I would have got a manual but I also have nerve damage in my feet so I don't care to shift HaHa
Have two of them in my hometown in montana. One is supercharged also. Then theres an S6 V10 i think.
Love my 4.2 B6 S4, which is basically the same car as the B7 minus cosmetic exterior differences. Bagged and JHM tuned. I also love my supercharged B8.5 S4 which is much different. That being said the 4.2 was also in the B8 and B8.5 RS4s as well as the B8 S5 and RS5 which were all after this B7. There are a ton of things that can be done to upgrade the issues you seem to have with the car such as the shifter. JHM makes an short shifter takes makes the shift precise and rewarding with a clink in each shift.
Nice shifting.
Beautiful machine from Germany
I really want to buy one of these and there's one at my job with a 6 speed but these cars having timing chain/guide issues and you have to pull the entire motor out to work on it. The only thing that's stopping me from buying one of these beast.
Had this car in white for 3 years. Best times of my life
My favourite model of Audi S4/A4 :)
Omg..... that sound 🙄🙄🙄 Sick video mate ;ppp
I have the manual s5 4.2l with tuning ~400hp. Much love 👍🏻
Where and what tune do u have? I have a 2008 s5 v8 automatic
I have an 05 s4 I’m not sure if it’s b6 or b7 what mods could I do to it ?
Good vehicle! I own a b6 S4 and I don't think It could have 400hp with full bolt ons and a JHM tune. Maybe if it were supercharged but damn these cars get expensive quick when modding them. Good show and good review!
Lol the reword for an na one of these is 338 whp so buddy must have been talking about crank numbers.
And that’s Fromm Matt barrington at jackal Motorsports tuning
you up the rev limiter.
I own a 2005 S4 V8 with 30,000 miles/garage kept ! , couple upgrades, .
out of curiousity does this have the cats still in it with this milltek exhaust?
I made my A4 B5 1.8T RWD..... totally killed my straight line acceleration but 100% improved my steering ,braking feel and overall joy......yes it does 2 wheeled burnout (on a flat surface) but it really needs a LSD to be perfect......if you work on your own car then cars like this S4 just isn't a big deal because there are online DIYs for everything concerning AUDI as far as I can tell,so follow the instructions and you should be okay!
I notice driving these , torque kicks in hard at 5000 rpm , where a commodore ss is 3000 rpm
That exhaust note is out of this world
Fr they sound so unique
What are the mods to get it to that level?
The paint is soooo swirled
The 40V V8 has such a nice tone and sound we dont get with the 32V. Only thing that makes up for it is the addition of 2 cylinders in the 5.2L 40V V10. I have both so Im spoiled
i have this engine and i approve this video
Buying a 07 s4 with only 37k miles on it this week. Can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of this monster!
How’d this go for you? Looking at an 07 s4 with 60k on it
@nikkoavila7161 no regrets at all! Some common maintenance but all normal stuff. Some small side trim pieces came off of the car after Denver weather/salted roads… it’s still a thrill to drive just keep her full of oil! Happy gas prices came down recently 😅 puts smile on my face whenever I take it out!
@@nathanbrock574 any timing chain issues? I know it seems to be the grim reaper of these things and that’s all anyone can talk about with them.
@@nikkoavila7161 none so far, keep up on your oil changes. Always a worry though for sure but it’s usually around 100-150k miles. I’ve heard putting in a RS4 chain helps but haven’t looked into it.
Great video. I know that the 4.2l s4 had a lot of issues with timing chains breaking. How common is that on these vehicles?
HerkimerSnerd I have to completely disagree with almost your entire comment here. I have had 3 S4's and I love them but the timing chain is absolute shit on the B6/B7. My 2004 and 2005 Audis had complete timing chain failure before 90k miles. This was not maintaince neglect or because of race days either. They were "commuter cars". On that note, who the hell is doing your work? 8000 for the timing system service? On My 2004 i did the full system replacement including guides, tensioners, both chains, etc and the shop charged me $5825 total parts and labor.
Unfortunately very common on the B6 models. Especially the 04 and 05 models. Very few of those cars have made it past 150k without touching something with the timing chain or doing full replacement. A buddy of mine had an 05 he purchased for over 20k from the original owner with 29,000 miles on it. It had complete timing chain failure at 67k miles. If yoy are interested in getting one I would highly recommend getting one that has proof of the chain being done.
@@DannyHacker1 what shop was that? I had mine done and it was absolutely NOT the chains It was a guide. OEM chains should not "break" unless poor maintenance or neglect or abuse. The warranty company said otherwise the engine looked good. When my service engine light came on I absolutely immediately took it to get serviced to prevent engine damage. That happened at about 104,000 miles. I paid 7100.00 but I had other things done since the engine was already out.
Once you keep on top of your oil you should be good always check your oil don't wait for the light to come on.
My dad gave me his 2000 Audi S4 B5 Quattro after he bought a brand new Acura TLX.
why’d he downgrade lol
Actually he has two cars, he has a big 2006 Acura MDX as well. He doesn't need such a big car. The Audi is bad on gas for him, he wants reliability and something a bit nice. So yeah.
Take good care of it. Put some LED taillights & headlights on it. Keep it clean. Put an exhaust on it
Having owned (2) of these one stock and one JHM modified. Constantly watch oil levels and timing Chain slap. Unfortunately as much money as you throw at these they are still slower than a tuned golf R. So after $8k into my S4 I went 2+ E85 golf R.... Still give a thumbs up every time I see a modded one though
Haha at the end you said passengers in the back, either you are 4’11” or you have never sat in the back seat, rear seats in these are for toddlers, lil people or carry-ons, haha. Great review on a great car.
I love my bumble bee 2006 S4👍🏾
Weight distribution of 55/65?
Have you ever been on a road that you haven't traveled ?
You should checkout our recent Sharkwerks GT4 video we shot in California, as well the McLarens I drove on Sonoma Raceway (definitely untraveled for me). In addition, our recent POV episode with the Alfa 4C was on a road untraveled, and as well the Aston Martin DB9 video we put out the other day, we've never filmed a video on that section of downtown Vancouver before. I like your humor though, which is why we're packing up for California soon :D We'll be forced to drive nothing BUT roads untraveled ;)
The owner needs to take it to a detailer and get the clear coast swirls out. ;)
No mention of the chains i see 🤣
Did you say it has “B8 RS4 breaks”?
Any celica gt4
I have an Avant and I love it
What year car?
i need to put the new used engine in mine😶🌫watching this give me nostalgia and reminds me how BA that car was

Wait till you get into a B7 RS4 😈 a friend of mine drives a supercharged one and I swear it would eat my car.
Are you talking about an aftermarket supercharger? Because the B7 RS4 had a NA V8.
Yep, though I'm sure a regular rs4 would eat my car as well.
5:05 OMG my ears.
I love mine but Shame about the chain issues
So nice ...V8... :)
so where do we get details on the car? I want to know what ECU he has and where he got it for my 07 B7 S4?
It’s oem bro just look up jackal Motorsport or hit up Matt barrington on facebook
I miss my B7 S4 Avant 6 speed. The engine has so many flaws, one being the timing chain mentioned. That is why you can find them so cheap now. You've been warned before buying.. I believe the R8 has a different variation of the 4.2 V8 which is the FSI 4.2 which is found in B7 RS4 and some of the S5's years (detuned 4.2 FSI) before both S4/S5 went with the V6 Supercharged engine. B7 S4's were not FSI engines. The 4.2 FSI engine is a lot more reliable and you only have to worry about the carbon built up.
Not only does it not have an R8 block, it’s not even close to the same.
Not sure if it's the classic across the pond power confusion but can someone explain how this S4 made 400hp with Bolt Ons when the stock car made 340bhp at the engine, That's nearly 100hp gain with the drive train loss. And the RS4 made 415bhp at the engine.
In his dreams maybe. There is no way the 4.2 BHF engine pushes 400hp without a supercharger/nitrous or some serious internal mods. Heck even the RS4 has hardly the power output claimed from the factory.
Justin Sherrod please tell me your joking.
Speed Obsession yeah load of shit you get nothing from mapping an n/a engine espicially this stupid s4 one. The b8 is far better.
I have 4.2 v8 Q7 amazing engine
Arthur Wall no didn't get a chance but I imagine there even more refined but still won't feel like a V8
What year is the Q7
Yooooo correct that paint! Looking so swirly
Nice vid. I own an S5 4.2 6 speed. Love the car but just like this one, all the warning lights come on for absolutely no reason lol. Ridiculously expensive to maintain and makes owning a Porsche look cheap.
Hey man I'm thinking about buying one, what went wrong with ur car?
Throw out bearing went two weeks after purchasing. Control arms went and aren't as simple or as cheap to replace as you'd think because Quattro is overly complicated. Carbon clean (happens on all early direct injection cars), new manifold, electronic parking brake light comes on sometimes for no reason, motor mounts etc. Recently it's acquired a taste for batteries which probably means the alternator needs to be replaced which is a very labor intensive job. It has a muffler delete so at least it sounds great going to and from the shop. The B8 S4/S5s are a good buy if you can find one in perfect shape with excellent service history- AWD, awesome sounding V8, super comfortable interior, hydraulic steering, decent handling and pretty cheap to purchase means it's still a decent car. It annihilated 300+ mile trips for work where I couldn't find a flight, and vacations to the sticks where I needed AWD were epic. Just find the right one and don't overpay.
How does this make a porsche look cheap to own..... I have own porsches for 25 years audis for the last 4 years and Vdub for the last 25 years also... But the audis are the cheapest to run in my book.
I'm talking about the total cost of ownership which includes depreciation and maintenance. A Porsche may have more expensive parts/maintenance but most 911s and Caymans are holding their value pretty well so the actual cost to own isn't much more than just basic maintenance.
Thierry Godard that is what I been factoring in also maybe I have had good luck with them mechanically strong the electricial problems are there but not as bad as the Porsche's but could be the few years I have messed with them. But over the years in a Porsche if you can see it it has broken on me and all my cars are modded from mild to wild! I'm just speaking from my experience and as a vw/Porsche tech.
I don't see many on the road down under . Because mostly every v8 fan can pick up a 2006 hsv clubsport for the same price 18000 aud
Ben Chesterman so fucking expensive lol. In the US, you can get one for around $8000-$10000 USD.
You usually don't ever have to change a timing chain. My 240SX has about 230,000 miles and has never had the timing chain replaced.
kylethestyle Its not the chain itself that breaks, it's the tensioners. They are some sort of polymer and when they break it will cause some damage.
Very very good good 👏👏👏👏👏
Got the same problem as mine black b7 the front end in chips.... Shit sucks!
•bro, a little research goes a long way•all s4's after that one are powered by a supercharged v6•the twin turbo you are referring to in in the b5•
