Dating apps took off in the early 2010s and changed modern dating forever. Today, thousands of dating apps have flooded the market and people are spoilt for choice. Yet, they seem to be ghosting the apps. More than a decade after their rise, dating app companies are bleeding money, facing losses, lawsuits, and slump in downloads. For instance, Bumble and Match Group, which owns Tinder, make up nearly the entire industry market share. They have lost more than $40 billion in market value since 2021. Many dating apps are in the same boat. What’s behind this supposed death of dating apps? Will they be able to recover? Palki Sharma tells you.

  • I hate the concept of dating apps as they exist today. They only filter people based on looks and give little to no importance to a person’s character. How is anybody expected to find true love just through looks and a few superficial characteristics? It’s the kind of stuff that makes men desperate, women entitled and everybody shallow. Dating apps - as they exist today - bring out the worst in people. That's why I never downloaded one myself.

  • There are many romance scammers using dating services. There are many unaware people becoming a victim to these scammers! The best way to meet someone is to get involved in local social type groups, and trying to meet other people through friends. Many people meet each other where they work, when shopping, dining out, and etc.

    • Exactly! Women don't generally choose a partner based on looks alone. Only a very superficial woman would do so. I used to like the OKCupid website because we could write long profiles, along with answering hundreds of match questions with meaningful information. I only matched with someone if they bothered to write a long profile and answer enough questions for me to see their personality and see that we had enough in common. A pretty face tells me nothing.

  • My 2 cents as an indian being on DAs: These apps are mostly for hookups, you need a lot of communication skills, looks and luck to get matches and most Indian men dont know how to talk to women in a compelling way especially online. Second, these apps' free version are designed to work against you in getting matches and force you to upgrade but the premium versions go as far as 5000 INR per month (Hinge) and still no guarantee after that. These app runners think Indians can aftord these amounts.

Dating apps is like the club on steroids all the average looking men get rejected by 90 percent of the woman who aren't even hot.   • It’s high time these apps get sued. There are so many risks with the law of the land, that users are unaware of, when they sign up for these apps. They have bad relationships or breakups or even get drawn into scams, all of which can have legal implications on users who are unaware of these consequences. The apps need to educate users better on the risks before getting into online commitments. They obviously don’t because they want more users and naivety drives more activity, so yeah in a way this is good. This industry needs a serious setback so it can re-think using apps to develop better quality relationships than just focusing on commercial value and quantity.

  • Unless there is the possibility to SCREEN for quality of matches - criminal record check, education, credit status, marital status and employment record, its a waste of time to go on these apps and start swiping. Most of them lie about theselves. I think matchmaking services that have actually screened potential candidates may be a better bet in future. I'm not wasting 15 minutes of my time on bottom feeders who I would not give a second look to. No thanks. I have better things to do with my time.
