Had a cable snap on me once at 60 miles into a 120 mile ride. A pal had a gear cable in his wee bag for 3 years that he never used. Worked perfect.
How many 10,000’s of miles of use was there on that cable?
Also, the high limit screw all the way in can get you onto cog 4 maybe cog 5, then just work between your front chainrings to get home.
This instead of carrying a cable.
This is a much better video than the first example of the on the trail fix. Need to have the spare cable piece in the bag already
Use the one that snapped and tie the long piece around something. It's one of those things that never happens unless of course it does happen. Like a broken chain. Don't forget to pack a jumper in case the weather turns nasty.
I'm guessing, The barrel adjuster should work for fine adjustments.

@@am529 Not sure if I would like to readjust after changing the cables, although it's not really mich to do. Just inserting a small piece seems less work in the long run. And you can choose freely which gear to install.
Possible with just a screwdriver, no cable needed

The cable is the one giving tension for the cage to move and stay in position limit screws are only limiters to prevent your cage going off the cassette
@Fugitive_8 you are correct but you can limit it so it doesn't go down to the hardest gear. You can limit it upinto an easier gear

This is pointless, just change the limit screws and cycle home, you will still have a big and small ring for 2 gears anyway.
How does a gear cable snap? The forces aren't that high. (I have, however, managed to snap a brake cable once. Two years of winter riding apparently lead to a bit of corrosion. Add wet rims and not pefectly set-up cantilever brakes, and you end up applying a hell of a lot of force...)
Thr shift cable will fray inside the shift lever! They are really hard to pick out! It's a good idea to replace the shift cables every year.
Gear cables wear and eventually fray around the bends in the shifter. Especially with some downtube shifters - due tighter bends. On the plus side, when the cable wears and frays on downtube shifters, usually you'll feel a frayed cable end poking your finger when you reach down to shift. So there's usually time to replace the cable before it snaps.
They definitely fail, sometimes without tons of mileage. I've had one fail with less than 5000miles and kept others for +20k miles that probably would have kept going for a while.

why not just use the dereailleur end adjustment screw for this?
In theory yes but how far in do you get, let's say on a typical Shimano derailleur? Probably not 4-5 cogs inward so that you have a good middle-of-the road ratio?
What if you snap the front derailleur cable?
That fails to the easier gear. The rear fails to the hardest gear

Or - and I'm going out on a limb, here - just use the broken cable?
Many times the cable will break inside the shifter, so it is a pain to remove, and then you still wouldn't have the plug at the end to create some tension on the derailleur.

How am I supposed to cut down a gear cable on the road which is 4ft long? I would rather dial in the high limit screw in to get it to an easier gear.
