  • Film simulations matter, but you can program a button or command dial for that. I think a dial dedicated to film sims is a waste of space.

  • Wow, I could not have imagined that Fuji would build in such a deal breaker into the X-T50. The previous dial was much more useful and this being uncustomizable makes the X-S20 a no brainer. It's much lower in price too! I was kind of considering to buy the X-T50 as the cool small retro camera instead of the X-S20 but taking a dial away from actual photography is such a let down. I get it that film sims are a big deal but you can even change them after the shot is taken but you can't change the shooting mode. This was the first thing I changed on my X-S10, switched the left dial from film sims to ISO and film sims would likely not be even in my top 10 choice for this dial setting.

    @veeaa@veeaa25 күн бұрын
    • Shooting drive modes aren't changed as often. My professional cameras (A1, Z9, Z8) I often don't change the shooting drive mode. The z8 puts them on a button as well. I think I'd prefer an iso dial but it would be too similar to Xt5 I guess.

    • @@nitni0002 Everyone has their preferences and I'm sure that the X-T50 film sim dial will find it's niche. I'm just very surprised what's stopping Fuji from adding an X-S20 dial instead to make everyone happy. Adding 10 different metallic dial stickers could be a fun bonus :) i.e. one for film sims, ISO, drive mode, etc.

  • Looks like the dials as in the X-S20. That SOOC (straight out of camera) feature via Film simulation is for me also really a time safer, and beside this, makes a lot of fun.

    • But that doesn't answer the "why a dedicated dial?" question. We can already assign a button or use the Q menu to bring up film sims

      @NJM1948@NJM194824 күн бұрын
    • @@NJM1948 The same I can say for the ISO dial or any other dial. The ISO is a button next to the Q Button, which is perfect, if I see a need to change ISO. Since I can set minimum shutter speed with ISO automatic there is no need to change often the ISO. Whereas changing the filmsimulation, without taking my eyes away from EVF is really helpful. With liveview I see directly which simulation is the best for actual situation. And beleave me, this I use on a daily base. No Canon, Nikon or Sony give me this creative eay to get my own look of my photos.

    • @@DrCharly2008 Yes, but those dials you mentioned are needed for exposure - films sims are for jpag shooters who want their images to be processed in the camera. Ask RAW shooters if they use film sims in camera and all will say no....because you cannot assign a film sim to a RAW image in camera. You can always add film sims in post edit if you so desire. @Skux720@Skux72021 күн бұрын
    • The issue with existing Fuji users is that they are existing Fuji users :) They don't look at a camera from the viewpoint of a new buyer. Fuji need products that have a Unique Selling Point, something that attracts *NEW* people to their range of cameras. This means more cameras and better returns for Fuji and we all benefit from future investment in the range as a result. Quite why existing users don't get that this is a good thing is a mystery to me.

  • I was over years, when I used Canon and Sony equipment RAW shooter. Always spent a lot of time afterwards to get the Look of my photos I want. Changing to Fuji my workflow changed dramatically. Cause I see durectly how the Photos will look like and in 90% I get straight out of camera what I want. I still have all the RAWs beside the JPEGs if I am not satisfied with my SOOC results. So if necessary I can spent later hours of time to change Film simulation without of seeing live if my result fits what I feel/thought during my live photo shooting. So this film simulation wheel beside EV wheel (aperture and manual focus at the lens) are the Real elements I need, while I observe my motive/target, without taking my eyes from the camera EVF.

With your information I could pre-order both the X-H2 and X-S20:) Regarding film simulations: If you have contact with Fujifilm, PLEASE ask if we could replace some of the built-in simulations with our custom recipes. The custom setting slots are way too precious to waste on simply using a recipe. For instance, I don't need Sepia or the 4 monochrome sims. I could replace those with my own. Using a NEW version of X RAW STUDIO, we could create a recipe, add a short description and save it to one of the slots so we can use them the same way we use the built-in ones. Imagine being to *film* using a Kodak or any other recipe. Of course we would be able to restore any slots to their original sim. I hope this gets some traction.

    • @@danieldavis6316 A good photographic tool should prioritize its dials for core functions, and there is not a lot of space on the compact X-T50 body for external controls. Which dial is the film sim dial going to replace, exposure compensation, drive mode? There are already other core functions which could benefit from a dial, e.g., ISO settings. The film sims are only popular on social media and is a marketing apparatus. The ability to customize the look of the jpeg image is a plus, but who needs to constantly switch among 12 film sim settings? The novelty quickly disappears after you play with them, and you most likely only need one, two or three of them. Where do all the colorful film sim images end up with? On social media only. They don't appear in serious photographic publications, competitions, photographers' portfolio, etc. Why? There needs a certain consistency in the appearance of photographs, and switching among many film sims destroy it. Still the majority of pros and serious hobbyists use the RAW format for which film sims are irrelevant. There is no great photographer who plays with film sims. Even in the film days, they just settled on whatever film they liked the best. I'm not judging the X-T50. Just saying it represents a change in direction. Incidentally, the last company that put a film sim switch on a camera was Olympus on the PEN-F, and everyone knows how that story ended...
