Who's Afraid of the Taliban? with Ahmed-Waleed Kakar

2024 ж. 6 Мам.

For twenty years the United States fought an un winnable and ultimately a self-defeating war in Afghanistan - only to withdraw in a humiliating way in 2021. The conflict ended what many saw to be a colonial enterprise. We explore that war, where it leaves Afghanistan, the geopolitics of the region, Afghanistan's relationship with Pakistan and the role of the Taliban. Many see the austere Islamic group as classic freedom fighters, defeating the worlds strongest and only superpower. But have they ultimately disappointed many in their time in government? The country suffers from poverty and near famine. Who is to blame for this terrible situation?
Ahmed-Waleed Kakar is no stranger to the country. Of Afghan descent, he is an analyst specialising in Afghan political history and the founder and editor in chief of The Afghan Eye @AFGHANEYE : an independent media platform offering English language analysis of Afghan affairs.

  • One thing to clear here, the humiliating defeat wasn’t only for united states but it was for the collective west including Britain for the fourth time.

    • The west didn't lose. Their goal was to disrupt the region. They won. We need to stop saying dumb things liek this. I served in the royal marines 2 tours, on my last tour I read the Quran and I converted in my last 3 weeks of deployment and ive been a muslim ever since. The Taliban are completely militarily inept, we wouldn't ever reciece a single casualty fighting them from small arms fire. EVER. They only ever got us from IEDs. Wed kill 30-40 of them at a time because they would just run towards us in clear line of sight. They have no understanding of even aiming down the rifle or firing in semi auto. As Muslims we need to stop saying dumb stuff. We didn't beat the kuffar, their aim wasn;t to conquer Afghanistan, if it was theyd of just done what Alexander the great did did when he conquered Khorasan and kill the population and make settlements. Their goal was to stop the entire region from becoming a stable power block. They have succeeded. They didn;t want to stay there. They wanted to grind it into staying an undeveloped shithole and they succeeded. My great wish is to one day fight for an Islamic state and redeem myself after fighting for the west. But its so depressing seeing Muslims be tricked into not realising their enemies are winning on every front.

  • As I walked through the blessed streets Of Yemen My gaze fell upon a little girl Her body was frail Her lips were parched But there was a twinkle in her eye Which took me deep to meet her Soul And heed the rhythms of her heart "O my sisters and brothers May Allah reward you For your compassion and your prayers And sharing with us your wealth, in our strife But please kindly do not feel pity for us حَسْبُنَا اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيْل For though we are suffering, and badly oppressed We risk only the danger, of losing our lives Whilst some of you may have nourished your bodies Whilst wrongly depriving your eternal Souls Risking the dangers of losing your Imaan" Then as a tremor ran through my veins The child looked up and gave a smile Which anointed the broken pieces of my heart And left with me a message to convey "Oh Ummah, harken And return to Allah"

Afghanistan is a beautiful place to be and the people that are leading the government in Afghanistan are the most wonderful people that ever existed in the Afghan history. I've responded to you many times and on many videos with facts, who h u kow conveniently forget. Anyway, here goes...those martyrdom attacks never targetted civilians, that was never the intention at all and if u look at the target precision rate of Taliban, u will see that they were mostly on point with hitting military and high value targets. Remember, Taliban did not have the advanced military technology and equipment, nor an airforce and drones, nor the luxury to be out in the open and time at the times of the attacks with then being hunted by the most advance technology and equipment, which is why there were unintended civilian casualties...why would they want to kill their own whom they were fighting to protect, defend and free! Also, remember there were false glag attacks done in the name of Taliban, a big one being the 31 May 2017 attack in Kabul, which Taliban has immediately denied. The infrastructure bring damaged was military strategy and smart moves...look at what the Ukrainians did or is is only acceptable to u when others do it? U don't even live in Afghanistan yet u are getting involved in our business....

  • Had the potential for a great interview. Watched the entire thing despite the length, unfortunately interviewer does not ask hardball follow up questions when necessary. Most importantly, "what are the instruments of foreign influence and foreign aid your referring to" Ahmed claims vaguely that foreign reigns of power still exist in Afghanistan and haven't been divested from the country, but no specific example was given. Alot of America blaming, alot of Taliban apologetics, but very little actual explanation for what is going on right now.

    • @@redjoggers he has no relationship with the taliban or the country itself other than his elders having lived there. He mentions vaguely at one point, extremely quickly in passing that his ancestors fought on the soviet side...all while blaming america for occupying a country which can not developed as long long as its occupied...I have no problem with this analysis, its his right to his analysis and on some level what he is saying makes sense, but is this what we call an expert? He is admitting right off the bat, that he is of the afghans who fled to america because they feared the taliban, and not only that but his family were of the anti-muhajadine faction. Then he makes vague statements about how we need to give the taliban a chance...thats all fine but he doesnt know anything special.

    • @@lastword8783 I have no problem critiqing american occupation of afghanistan, even opposing it, which I did for many years. Im asking a simple question, of what does he mean by "foreign reigns of power still exist in Afghanistan" if he had explained what he meant by this even once in the video, I wouldnt critique him. But he doesnt, he does not give one specific example of how america is still using aid programs or economic infrastructure, or whatever he is talking about here, to continue to rule over afghanistan. If you can answer this question, I will gladly withdraw my critique.

  • Afghani culture and heritage is extremely rich, generous to their guests and hospitable. You are frowned upon in Afghanistan if your home does not have a "guest quarter" which at times is more furnished than the main house itself. That being said, the ruling "Taliban" who rule in the name of "Shariah" are doing anything but that. Talk to your every day Afghani and they will tell you how sad it is that their sisters and mothers are suddenly forbidden from recieving an education, making an income or the men not growing their beards etc. This forcefulness or forbidding what Islam actually does not forbid, does the Taliban no favours as it is a common understanding in Islam that our blessed Prophet's beloved wife, Khadijah r.a worked and was a successful businesswoman. So it seems on the offset that the Taliban is acting not of the Hanafi fiqh but mostly through their cultural norms, even the Deobandis today will not forbid their womenfolk to work/educate themselves nonetheless the 1st generation Deobandis still hold that mindset and it may take a few generations before that thinking is no more. Allah knows best but it may also be a result of everything that they endured which has led them to become to harsh on their people as if to say the so called "western freedom" has failed, so lets try it our way.

  • Your "hope" is needlessly mired in too many caveats. If the current trajectory continues the world will change its tune in 5 years, and Afghanistan will get past the bend economically in ten. You are correct that the one of the fundamental necessities of economic development is peace. I would add that the second necessity is a good government, and a fair legal system. By "good government" I mean a government that feels responsible towards its citizens, that is not gratuitously corrupt, that has basic competence, a sober worldview, and enough humility. A government that is willing to do the work that it has the capacity of doing. Any country which has all three of these things, 1) peace, 2) a fair legal system, and 3) a good government, will make perhaps slow but steady progress in every sector. Large dollops of cash infusion - for an economy that can absord it - works to hasten the process. Borrowing technical knowhow from other advanced countries works to speed up the process too. The Taliban are doing small things, buidling a dam here, a road there, holding a small expo, and so on, but they are doing a lot of these small things. And they would all start to add up. I would not be surprised if Afghanistan under Taliban actually starts to make rapid economic progress. So, as far as i can see, barring the outbreak of another war, or some other unforseen disaster, Afghanistan should either progress slowly but steadily or should hop, skip and jump on its merry way to prosperity.

It's the evil US sanctions and US theft of our Afghan assets which has maked the humanitarian crisis which started under the US-Ghani regime worse. Without sanctions and US theft of our Afghan assets, our government would be rebuilding Afghanistan and our economy faster than what they are currently doing.
