  • Magnificent Video, Dr. Goose... You hit the nail on the head describing the connectivity and the emotional component which some of us feel is absolutely essential and, unfortunately lacking in newer cars. Well Done.

    • Mark M z4 or z4m. The problem for each is the other. The z4 had a refresh that didn’t include the m model and the z435is aka it’s official name the z4 s-drive35is X-Drive Lmnopqrstuvwxyz-Msport is a superb car, same chassis with the famous twin turbo power plant from the 335i etc. and even just the 3 liter straight 6 z4 with the right options is superb as if that all wasn’t enough there’s a ton of the Z4 m roadsters just like the z3m roadsters and those always have a steep discount that makes them a bargain comparatively.

  • This video took me back to when I owned an E90 325i. I took it to BMW Roswell to have the fuel pump looked at. The service advisor informed me that they would be providing me with a loaner car for about 2 days. At the end she asks 'sir, are you able to drive a 2 seater with a stick?' I told her yes. I assumed I would be given the keys to a garden variety z4. Imagine my surprise when I noticed 4 tailpipe tips out back and an M-badge on the rear! The service advisor hops out the car, gives me the keys with a smile and says 'enjoy!'....and that I did! First and only M-car I ever drove....nothin else like it! In about 12 years since then, at least in Atlanta, I've seen only one out and about, they're super rare!

    • So true. I remember looking at a new E46 back in 2005. Seemed like a great car dynamics-wise, loved the engine. In the end, because of winter conditions I would drive in often, and a way nicer interior, I went for an '05 A4 (B6) with no regrets to this day. I still have that Audi, love it, but retired it as my daily a few years ago past 100k miles to preserve what life it has left in it. With modern cars and electric power steering, too much tech, etc. I realized you really don't know what you have until it's gone! I had hoped to get a BMW someday as a fun second car, but everything they make now doesn't have the soul the old ones used to. I hope they return to form someday!

  • It' double shot: most underrated channel reviews such underrated car. I've bought Z4 coupe (non M) with 3.0 motor and I love it. It's really dedicated car that gives you special feeling when you drive it. You have said it: it's not 3 or 5 series that tries to be a sport car. I assume it will rise in value in near future, because of rarity: only 4k where made. Even not all BMW fans know about this car. So when you see Z4M you know its likely the person who owns it bought it because they specifically wanted it. I'm excited for future reviews of such unique and underrated cars. Love your channel!

  • Z4 M Coupe is definitely a bucket list car. The complaints about the shifter are valid, but they're due to the shift carrier arm being on very soft bushings, and the shifter itself pivots on a nylon ball and socket. $300 bucks will fix it with teflon carrier bushings and a short shifter, although the short shifters really require a much greater effort than stock, which takes getting used to. BMW, like almost everyone else, has abandoned N/A engines, and it's a crying shame. Even their run of the mill engines like the N52 will put a smile on your face. When you mentioned that the party starts at 5500RPM, I laughed out loud. I know exactly what you mean. These cars are pretty quick if you keep the revs up. Great review, as always. Keep them coming!

I found the 3.0si a much easier car to live with than the M, mainly to do with the M version’s harsh ride on the UK’s compromised road surfaces! With so few of both versions produced, particularly in right-hand-drive, they are a rare sight. I went for ruby black over piano black accents and parchment interior, in my opinion the best colour combination. The only one that sounds better is the S65 for the Eventuri carbon box that is a perfect copy of the factory box. The sound is only topped by the F1 with the Carbon box. All 3 are BMW M engines with the latter being the same architecture/DNA with different oiling systems and internal component materials.

  • As someone who owns an S54, I don’t believe for one second that they actually fixed the rod bearing issue. If you own one of these, you gotta do it every 80k miles, and get oil analyses. You just can’t have an undersquare motor that revs to 8 grand, and not have rod bearings issues. Take care of your VANOS too. Beisan and dr. VANOS have you covered. They’re such great goddamn engines. Love mine to death.

I live in a very congested city so my si is ideally suited as I have driven both cars. The M is very twitchy and suits the more advanced drivers who can extract the power and control it. This is my personal experience driving both cars, M is the fastest no question.

  • There is something to be said about the Bangle era BMW’s, besides their butts that are surprisingly aging quite well. They really are the last analog ultimate driving machines. I own an F80 M3, mostly due to lack of better options, needing four doors (baby) and wanting a stick, and I think that’s more of an indictment of all modern cars than BMW. Cars have gotten blistering fast, and to keep us from killing ourselves with power we don’t need, have gotten numb. I’m in product development in a different industry, but full well know the conundrum of giving features you know aren’t used through design studies, but also know that people won’t buy the product if those features are omitted. However, I will say my M3 has grown on me. The more I get to know it, the more I appreciate what it is, although I miss the intangible buzz you get from older BMW’s, like this fine example.

  • Speaking of not rewarding hamfisted driving, i totaled mine on a back road in MI. Like a real dirt bag. Incredibly enjoyable car, more fun to drive than E46M3 imo. Interior quality, i felt, was quite a bit worse than my E46 however. Felt flimsy, developed quite a few squeaks and rattles for a low mileage car. I did enjoy this more as an occasional car, M3 was still a better daily. Nothing too shocking, and definitely not a deal breaker if youre considering one, but its a tight cabin(good and bad). Agree on the comments about finding a clean one these days. I paid 29 for a 21kmi Interlagos/Black in 2014. I would have to pay close to 43k for a comparable one today. I still search occasionally, but the value just isnt there anymore imo as the maint costs continue to climb up and up and up. Will be one of the more collectible BMWs in the future imo, the hatch brought this design to another level. Solid machine, incredibly underrated. Great vid as always, appreciated

    • No subframe issues. Mind you that I’m not very mechanical so all the service was done by the dealer. The valve adjustment every 30k miles was around 800 USD. Simple oil change was 300. Replaced power steering pump 1200 USD. 900 USD to change the ignition coils at 40 k because 2 of them just died. Then at about 60k miles it didn’t start when you turned the key. Nothing happened. Battery was changed, battery cables then the starter. Basically 2000 USD later still same issue. Every other time when you started I had to turn the key 10 times to start. Sold it back to the dealer. Actually got a decent price for it. It sat on the lot for 3 days and then sold. The sales guy told me somebody bought on the internet it they shipped it to them unseen and as is. Curious to find out what the new buyer did with getting the car started. Now I drive an M235i. Trouble free for 5 years. No where near as fun though.

  • Possibly the finest quality enthusiast review of the MCoupe, last BMW to have a real ignition key, too. Yep, the stock exhaust did sound too sterile when revving out. Removed the resonator and square tubed shaped x-section, replaced with a 2.5" round tube X-Pipe, and rounded out the square connecting sections with a tube expander. Turns out the factory mufflers flow great, its only that resonator section choking both power and the lower octave begging to come out. The car you tested may have already softened up on its stock suspension. You're welcome to review mine, in an SCCA Street-stock legal configuration, with more appropriate Bilstein struts and dual adjustable Viking rear shocks, and larger front swaybar, with appropriate RE-71R tires instead of the wiggly heat cycled Michelins on your test car. With a freshened up suspension, that unhappy suspension behavior you described in your test car goes right away.

Now, I'd had two clown shoe M Coupes (99 in Black and 01 in Red) and fell in complete love with the 2007 in White over Black. My best bud bought a Cayman S in black at the same time, BTW. I liked his car, but loved mine. Bottom line, the Cayman was the better sports car, but the M Coupe was the wild fling you have over a summer that flamed white hot.
