Preparing Honey Bees for a Canadian Winter - 2019 Fall Video Compilation
a Canadian Beekeeper's Blog
"2019 Fall Rewind" is a video edit of all my videos from when I pulled off the last of my honey boxes at the end of August to when I sorted the last of my honey bee hives into the winter shed in Mid November. The fall of 2019 was one of the most challenging years for our farm, here I provide a glimpse from the honey farm. A hot dry summer lead into 6 inches of rain throughout September which followed by over a foot of wet snow at the beginning of October. This weather not only shortened our opportunity to properly feed the bee hives up for winter but it also caused us terrible grief as we battled the mud and then frost as we tried to pick the hives up to move them in for winter. It was a fall that we never forget!

Fantastic my friend! Had some minor surgery need to keep still for a few days my wife said why don’t you watch that Canadian keeping guy from the start to the end. I said I’m all caught up and 💥 BAM💥 perfect timing thank you for the awesome information again! Heading to the bee convention hint my question will be about nucs and Ezyloader’s. Missed my annual deer hunt in Canada and now my favorite bee guy!!! DAMN COVID
Wow amazing
Hellow sir, I,m instresting in honey bee farming.would you train me? Shah Khalid from pakistan k.p.k.

@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Hello, I wonder what's the bucket on the bucket easy to come
LOOOOOVE this.. thanks for TAKING THE TIME 🤩🗓️📆📅
Each time I watch/listen to this, I chuckle every time when you find out Michael is 14, not 15 🤣. Michael is a very respectful, responsible young man. I caught it when he answered “no sir” to you asking him a question in the truck. I sure wish my husband and 13 year old son had that kind of relationship. You and Sandy should be very proud, as I’m sure you are.
I was in Miami in 2015. I worked as a waiter. I returned to Serbia and got a job in the municipality. I started working with bees and fell in love. It's been 4 years and I can't wait for spring to continue :) I wish you all the best in your work :) Greetings from Serbia
I pray you do NOT feed sugar syrups. Let real Beekeepers leave enough honey to Bees who graciously SHARE with humans.! THEY share with us. We are NOT to rape their hives and greedily take ALL their food for winter!
This could bee a documentary, nice job filming all of that work. Dang! You've got a load of bees! Good luck this coming winter!
Love the way you care for your beeees
Greetings to all Asalrichis from Uzbekistan. Video zur .👍👍🐝
that crane truck is the back saver 9000. amazing operation
That ez-loader is amazing. Sounds a lot better then my loader.. URRRGGGAAAHHH 'Lifts box with legs/back'.
Great video!! Well worth the long watch 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Good luck in your work
Can't speak highly enough of your videos, so entertaining and informative thanks :)
Love it! Who needs TV now that you're making feature-length KZhead videos!

I think I can call you friend ... I wish you good health and your family !! and in 2021 to be full of joys and everything that is understood. is what my eyes see !!! Well done ..... I do not know English !!!!! See you .. GREECE ...
Very much appreciate all the time and editing you put into these
Oh, as you can see, these don’t hold much production value
Don't sell yourself short... The wealth of knowledge you freely give has helped me begin my beehive journey. I have reserved my first 6 hives for spring and will be attending the conference in Jan in Tenn. I know you will be virtual but look forward to it.
Be sure to toss me a few hard questions!
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog I already have a notepad full of questions. Working on more...

Commercial beekeeping is a LOT of work. Not a 9 to 5 job for sure. I see more clearly why you implemented your work saving equipment. Have a good Christmas Ian.

I found this all quite fascinating, didn't realize there was so much involved in maintaining large bee colony's.

I still think you should do a video on the six frame nucs. From splits to 10 frame.
I appreciate sir you are so creative lots of love from Nepal 🇳🇵.

Ive just discovered your channel, im trying to learn as much as i can right now and im currently catching up on your videos. Im curious if you have a lot of drift or a lot of lost bees when you move your hives like when it was flooded or other maneuvers?
Brasil 🇧🇷
СПАСИБО Thanks Ian
Hello Canadian beekeeper, question for you. When heading into winter, and during winter, is the bottom entrance the only entrance you should have open? Also, during winter, when the bees and queen are balled up feeding on frames of honey, will or can they more side to side to the next frames? Thank you so much.
It's an interesting 👍
Good morning Ian, halfway through the new video. Nice way for a suburban carpenter to start his day. One question, do you ever have bear issues ? There must be bears where you are ! Thanks again ! Stay well !
Yes and no. I’m in the middle of prairie. We have ravines that wander across the land which leads bears down once abd a while
Hello there. I am very curious what is in the bucket?😊
Love your content, curious of the reason why you use 3 nucs for honey production.
thật là tuyệt vời khi thấy những đàn ong rất đông và rất nhiều mật
With your pliable lid covers for the winter, do you have a bottom opening for them to fly out? Or do you still leave a gap under the lid for them to flyout?

Your hives are damp, that's why your bees need this strange treatment. The walls of your hives are just too thin, you need to insulate them. Keep them dry and you'll notice the difference. Greetings!
No, they are damp because of the amount of rain we received that fall. They dried out nicely and wintered very well inside
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog I understand but when you keep them dry and warmer you'll have a chance to stop using chemicals ' cause the natural varroa killers will come to your beehives. And it also means less food for the winter time. Chemicals kill both - the bad and the good, so the balance is lost. Try it with your few hives as a test. Watch this video about book scorpions, it's really great: kzhead.info/sun/rJWzlMWmmoqId58/bejne.html
good work . What is a drink in a gallon
what a goodlooking kid, must take after his mother
Do you have a video on how you manage swarming?
I believe feedings is coddling and makes the hives weaker . Your sacrificing strength for capitalization! Feeding uses up your profits as well.
Any thoughts on oxalic acid treatments now in well insulated hives? Minnesota, high today 40 fahrenheit (R-15,-20, waded burlap quilt boxes). Wondering how the clusters might react. Fantastic summation! Thank you.
Ideal on a warm day
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Yes. Realizing the cluster will not be penetrated. Was curious about the thermal ball regrouping and center heat mass recovery. Just BTU bee pondering with coffee :)
As long as the cluster is loose enough to allow disturbance
Hello. Truly inspirational. We will start beekeeping this spring. What's the configuration of your hives, I mean the frame sizes from the bottom leve to the top ones? It's the same size at all hives? Thank you?
I use standard deep equipment
Muito diferente da forma do manejo aqui no Brasil. Pretendo começar esse ano trabalhar com apicultura. Sou de Manaus AM. 👏
On summer yes you can have more honey right.... I m confused on winter and what you gonna do with all the box and where you gonna moving all the box of bee ....
Why the he'll are you keeping bee hives in Lake Michigan, I'm kidding, but at a glance that came to mind.
You mentioned culling problem hives and replacing with nucs. What do you do with the bees from the culled hives? What is your procedure with moving the nucs in? (Do you move them into 10 frame supers?)
I’m the fall all the culls are shaken out into the grass. I’m the spring those culled hives are taken to a queen mating yard for rejuvenation
Thanks, what about the nucs you move in?
I am from Syria and very impressed in your job, but my question is the dear of his breeds that I see because I see it is very suitable for early activity in low temperatures and thanks
Where did those suger buckets come from and what kind of lid is on them?
What do you use against varroas and nosema cerana, apis
Good
ماشاء الله
Ian, I live in Minnesota two of my hives are in rough shape and one froze out. I noticed in the dead hive there is plenty of honey capped and uncapped, very little pollen. I treat for mites in the fall with formic acid. I also noticed in the final inspection late fall that there was very little pollen in most of my hives. I am small only 12 hives now. Is the lack of pollen something I should have been worried about earlier. Is this a management problem on my part. Would putting a pollen patty in the rest of the hives help? I will then reseal them with tape and rap them until spring.
All signs point to mites

Actually curious for the feeding pails, what they 'work' like. Is there a specific name for these type of 'buckets'? Did buy them or make them yourselve? Greetings and thanks for the very informative video!
Everything in beekeeping is home made lol
LOL :D That's right, I'd plan to make some myself but was wondering what kind of 'construction' is inside.
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlogJust found out on your feeding video, everything I needed to know around 13:00.
Hello Ian, I am a new beekeeper. I am wondering on how you reduce the beehive (4 boxes of bees into one). In this video (min 6), do you just remove all three boxes (everything that is above queen excluder), feed them right away and that is it? Or there is some slow process to reduce it? I am afraid that they might swarm if I remove boxes while there is still warm outside? Thank you.
Could somebody tell me the mesh size on the screen? For the feeders.
Where do you get your feed buckets from? And feeding 2:1?
Hey Ian, could you show us what is the construction of those bins where you have syrup, it's clear for me that you have some wholes at the buttom but i don't understand how it works, so i'd be appreciate if you send some link or tell briefly about it, thanks
Check out my feeding playlist
Don't you have water coming into the hive through the top feeding hole? Thank you.
Yes if it’s not sealed
I have hives in north central mn. We have to run electric wire around our yard. When we put out syrup the bears tear the fence down and eat the syrup and hives. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hard for you, your strategy is successful and few people follow it, but I have an important observation that the insulation for the hive cover is not tight or thick, allowing moisture to condense on the bees, and this is harmful to the bees, and it is possible for heat to come out from the bottom of the hive, and the water does not condense on the frames inside the hive, and it is required that the hive be open from The bottom is wire, not or without as long as the shop is dark in distraction

Hello, what is the recipe for this syrup? How is it made?

I don't understand, you're in Florida, or do you ship your bee's to Canada during winter? Is there a Miami in Canada? Maybe it'll be explained
Ever thought abt a snow fence?
