5 STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR ART! | How to Develop Your Art Style | Beginner Art Tips

2024 ж. 5 Мам.

My art style developed slowly and naturally over the course of 10 years to what it is today. Looking back, I can sort of piece together what I did without thinking at the time into steps you can follow and hopefully speed up that process.
As always: I am not an expert nor do I claim to be. You guys asked for my opinion on this subject and I'm sharing. If this video says anything, I hope it tells you that you should not look to one artists or person for all the answers. Look around you: explore! And take what you see and apply it to your life in a way only you can. Have fun!

    • 10 yrs to develop a style? bruh who in the world takes 10 yrs for a art style, it takes about 1 year to learn ur own art style, ik a guy that he said he had been drawing for 1 year and 5 months and his drawings are good, well he draws on his phone using his fingers and he's pretty good at it and i mean it he is taking 10 yrs is just to much well of course it depends on what age u start drawing so the progress goes slow but if ur like 15 or 16 1 year should be enough for u to find ur own art style as u practice day by day or whenever ur not lazy to practice u can advance as long as u set ur mind to it, well i should be the last one to talk considering how lazy i am lmao i wonder if i should stick to practice on female than male...but then again in the future i plan on making my own manga, "nothing is impossible" trust me i also know another guy that his drawings are....not to good i'd say more like very average yet he published his own manga its not popular but he did his best y'know

  • I’m grateful for everything you said at step 3. As a kid I loved drawing and doodling and just the feeling of putting pen to paper, but I always struggled with drawing and never had ‘the gift’ of drawing from memory or from my imagination and told myself I just don’t have what it takes and gave up. I learned about 3 years ago that I have a condition called Afantasia. I literally don’t have a ‘mind’s eye’. And I always believed that if you use a reference you’re not an artist you’re just a copycat so don’t even bother. I’ve been very hard on myself over it. But discovering why my brain needs a reference to work from and now teaching myself that there’s no shame in that has helped a lot. I’m still drawing at a child’s skill level but now at least I’m willing to try. 🥰🥰🥰

    @briearlley@briearlley2 жыл бұрын
    • Art in any form is simply finding a way to express your creativity, Wether music, painting, drawing. I think the biggest obstacle we face is old expression like your either born with it or not, you can't copy, and archaic teaching methods. I'm 44 and only started drawing a year ago and noticed almost all major artists use reference material, and all have used reference material to grow. Even people who draw nature use the nature as a reference, fantasy characters are still based off human or animal muscle structures and so on. So reference away!

      @marnierose7816@marnierose78162 жыл бұрын
    • And the aphantasia will make your approach your art really differently than other people, you’d have the advantage of not being influenced by your minds eye! (although you might not believe this at the moment)

      @Thunderpaws111@Thunderpaws111 Жыл бұрын
    • @Brianna E. Your comments helped me to realize that I share that trait and have no "mind's eye". I do have an imagination and creativity however, I just start from a different inspiration. I can look at something and imagine it in 20 different small ways and hellaa embellish it in my mind - my creative process. But sit me down with a blank page and pencil and I'm like 'duuuh, what do you want me to draw?' So yes, I greedily use references to begin and then MY creativity kicks in. Thank you for helping me to understand that better now... 🙏

      @creative2716@creative2716 Жыл бұрын
    • @@creative2716 that’s a beautiful process. 🥰🤗 I think like most things in life, creativity is a spectrum, and once you embrace where you are on that spectrum you can thrive. Creatively divergent. There’s no ‘right’ way to create. Took me a long time to realize it. 😅👌

Doing this exercise I think my first picture is actually the cutest, by step three they're looking a bit more realistic, and step four looks wow! But when I get to the redraw and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself, the drawing of me looks like old Cathy cartoons. Then I tried to draw my corgi and made the ugliest loaf of bread I ever seen. I should practice corgis another day after my brain recharges. Thank you❣️

    • You are like me! I only learned within the last 5 years I have, aphantasia. Which is the inability to conjure mental images. I thought everyone lived life like this. I felt so much guilt when artist or people would make comments about people referencing or copying art..because that's all I can do, because I can't "make things" up in my mind or imagine them ahead of time. Finding out this is just how my brain works, and hearing waffles and this video, really made me at ease with my drawing. I enjoy it ..so I am back to it ! I'm going to do it for me now .and just try to improve small steps of drawing

Look at real life photos(redraw it in the style you used in the beginning photos)(if you don’t see improvement keep practicing)(What waffle recommends is make different shapes from the body or trace the outside) 4. Steal like an artist(Study someone else’s art and see what you like that you can add to make you character look better and try to add it to your character without looking at the photos) 5.redraw the character to see your progress For more detail watch the video obviously

    • What most effectively helps me improve at figure drawing and anatomy is collecting a tonne of photos and accurate drawings of the body, in a folder called "good anatomy pics" and spend time (during or outside of drawing sessions) really analysing and staring at the pics, looking out for "key anatomy features" that appear regularly (EG, my observations: with thighs straightened, theres usually a crease that appear under the ass cheeks, or when sitting or kneeling, the thighs squash outwards; when leaning sideways or back, a crease usually appears in the same place on everybody). When I spot features that afe missing from my pics, O k ow exactly what I need to learn next!

What she should have said is "If you can draw accurately without a reference that's great, but if you don't it's perfectly okay to use one it doesn't make you less of in artist". Instead she basically shamed people, by basically saying "If you didn't use a reference, you're nothing special".

Me personally I have jumped in the past years from realistic, to animated, to cultural, to abstract, to graffiti. I have enjoyed all of the, and they have made me a better artist. • Random but : I was drawing in my sketchbook ([trying] to draw a realistic Freddie Mercury) at the dining table with my older sister. She was drawing too, and then she put down her pencil and said, “You know how there are stylistic types of drawing the human face, and how there can be different levels going from cartoony to realistic?” Of course I said yes. And she continues with, “Well, what if instead of what we look like as the most realistic, there was another level of realism. Like a human more realistic than we are. And we just don’t know because we are the slightly stylized version of drawing for them.” And I’ve never been the same since.

  • Wow, I don't think I've ever seen such a comprehensive tutorial before. My art improves very slowly, because whenever I try to learn from tutorials they always seem to assume a certain level of skill (natural enough for a talented artist I think), but that tends to leave me frustrated because I feel like I'm missing a step. I'm in no way a beginner, but the fact that you start at the beginning and go through the various levels of honing a skill, both visually and verbally, makes it super easy to figure out what to do to improve from the point where each individual person is in their process. All that to say: this is fantastic and super useful, thank you!

  • Hi Rin, I am so grateful I found your channel! I have been drawing for a while now and lately have been focusing on drawing a chibi character impersonating my daily life or philosophy and I love doing it! The thing is I get real disappointed when I post my drawings on Insta and get a handful of likes from my contacts, which I know is very shallow but it does bum me out.. so now I am using step 3 from this video, ie using reference to work on human anatomy and poses. Bought some magazines to test it out and can see some improvement already! Thanks a lot for sharing and making it look accessible and doable from any level, it means a lot! ❤

  • My father was a great artist and when he started to teach me how to draw when I was child was through muscle memory of my hand. He made me trace everything in his art portfolio and let me tell you, after doing that for months, your hand really remembers. By the time I was in 6th grade, I was able to draw the old Cola bear you saw on school folders. It was so good that my teacher send it in for a art competition and I won first place. During those times, the Cola bear was not line work but a lot of shading..let’s say I was proud and till this day, I can create anything by simply shading without lines.

  • I think my struggle lies within the fact that I am inspired by a variety of different styles and I want mine to reflect every aspect of them in my own art. This is difficult though because they are all so different. I love realism almost as much as I love animated cartoon styles. I find whenever I drift one way I feel I'm missing out on the other... I get consumed in things that essentially ruin the joy of art like I think I should just stick to a style more like realism because I produce better looking art in the eyes of others because I've been doing it for so long... or I worry about what style people love more so I can get more likes on social media... my mind can morph the finding a style into a task rather than a discovery... I know it sounds strange that I'm aware of it yet I still struggle with random pressure no one is putting on me but myself... because I've always loved art and have always been considered good at it my mind tells me I should produce it into the world, I don't know if this is because I need to prove to myself that I'm good at it or what, but putting it out there is always in the back of my mind when making art and I hate it. It never used to be that way... I hope that I'll be able to train my mind to value art for what it originally was for me which was a spiritual escape and an act of creative expression not something to potentially profit off of. (Please be kind I just wanted to share my experiences to admit to myself that this is something I need to work on but also potentially let others know they aren't alone if they also feel this way ❤)
