My point is that Ron Atkinson had a cushy, well paid job as a football pundit, yet in 2004 he used language that was unacceptable in 1984. He may have been set up (ie they gave him enough metaphorical rope), but he must have thought it was fine to talk like that in the studio and the commentary box when off air, so it was indefensible really.

  • As to Nigel's comment that Ron played the first match with 3 black players, in fact it was West Ham United: "The three players in question were Clyde Best, Ade Coker and Clive Charles (younger brother of John Charles, the first black player to pull on an England shirt). The game was played at Upton Park on 1st April 1972, almost exactly six years before West Brom's more celebrated trio stepped onto the Portman Road turf."

Yes i remember Clive best playing for West Ham did you hear the amount of dogs abuse he got from the West Ham fans for being a black player playing for there club?? Well my grandfather was there and he couldn’t believe what he was hearing that day. Times change over time 🕰️ i suppose. Times were different then i suppose .     • His career is over because of his racist attitudes in the past. I dislike PC like I dislike bigots in any sport. That aside I do like Ron as he is a character. He was the best English manager Manchester United had and he was a scouser born in Liverpool. SAF AND BUSBY AND DOCHERTY were all jocks.
