The BJP candidate has been declared a winner in Surat, Gujarat, after the Congress candidate's documents were rejected - his proposers themselves raised questions- and all other candidates withdrew. The Development has led to a major political controversy with the Congress likening it to the Chandigarh mayor elections

Is it the first time that a candidate has bern elected unopposed. Also why should NOTA apply when there is no opposite leader. Obviously people will not select NOTA when there is only 1 candidate and people will not come out to vote NOTA ! Some much time is wasted on such nonsense
No it’s not the first time. North East has always had a couple of candidates who won unopposed. Most likely, Congress in Surat was sleeping and forgot to confirm their candidate.
This Surat incident again proves that Congress is not only unfit to be ruling party but also unfit to be a capable opposition party.

I watched the whole program on the Surat election. First off all I appreciate you in moderating this discussion without allowing shouting matches between the panel members. I have one basic question. When an election particularly a lokshabha election isn’t it the responsibility of the political parties to make sure that they field their candidate and device backup plans to execute that. All political parties play different games whether it is dirty or fair to achieve results. Is Congress party so naive that they are not capable of fielding a candidate at any cost ? As Yeswanth said it is not at all the correct way an election should be fought but it is the responsibility of all political parties involved to make sure that the people are able to cast thier votes and choose the candidate.
Is this not appeasement of 'minorities' as per Nayay Patra 'We will restore the Maulana Azad Scholarships for study abroad and increase the number of scholarships.' Why only for minorities ? Why study abroad ?
When congress has some plan in manifesto mr.rahul elaborates it in his speec 31:29 h xray economic survey distributing it to weaker communities on their number strength(more population) has been retaliatedby bjp leader.

Barkha Dutt spoke about context for anything which happens. In the case of the Congress, Left & Muslim appeasement has been going on for years, long before the Jana Sangh or the BJP became an electoral force... From * Codifying ONLY Hindu Personal Law * Controlling & administering only Hindu Temples/lands & revenue. * To prostrating before Muslims in the Shah Bano Case. * To creating a Muslim/Dalit coalition & Sonia meeting the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid before the election * Mollycoddling, terrorists & separatists in Kashmir and never hitting back. Just a few points to show an abnormal tilt which also showed their confidence that the majority Hindus were divided by caste, region , language etc. The BJP galvanising the Hindus into a votebank WAS A COUNTER TO THIS and the continuing public groundswell against the Congress, is clear proof that the public wants to ensure that there is no going back to the old wickedness. That's the background... Anyone who reads the Congress Manifesto knows it is a Manifesto of desperation with the signature of the Islamo Left written all over it. Any sensible citizen will know that the Manifesto is plainly hinting at: * Dividing Hindus on Caste Lines. * Outright unimplementable bribery [Rs 1 lakh to women] * And the references to redistribution in so many words, shorthand for concessions/subsidies whatever to Minorities.
