  • This is how chess is truly meant to be played. Black took White completely out of boring theory and forced White to think on the fly. The chess world needs much more of this. Bobby Fischer hated chess in his later years because he correctly noted that it had become nothing more than brute memorization, rather than over-the-board thinking. This is an awesome game and should be a wake up call to stodgy theorists.

    • Cheating (at least in this case) would be using a bot to pick your moves, or some form of hacking (that would result in a legitimate appearing game save), or some sort of player collusion. At least those are the only ones I can think of.

  • I can see the logic of trading a rook for a bishop very early in the game. The rook is more an end game piece, particularly the Queen side rook if you plan to castle King side. Danya's Queen side rook moved just 3 times in the game and never left the back rank; not exactly an over active piece and one I'm sure he wouldn't have minded swapping out for that early bishop he traded.

    • Danya is very skilled at 960 and I'd expect him to learn traps from the early games even with a short time control. Maybe a 70ish game match wasn't enough learning or tilt/fatigue was enough to offset learning.

Life in the 1920s was more akin to the late 1800s than the 1990s the year 2080 isn’t too far away. It might be a dystopian wasteland it might be a futuristic dreamscape who knows. Chess is 1500 years old it might be the one thing that remains the same throughout the ages people in the year 2104 are still going to be blundering their queens don’t you worry.

I'm only 2200 so I'm not GM-level or anything, but it was pretty obvious to me he wasn't going to give up his bishop there. It was a trap. White wanted to give up the rook to get one of the bishops off the board, but black didn't take the bait, and rightfully so. Black would have lost their biggest advantage if they took the rook with the bishop there. They had no reason to accept that trade.

  • Taking a rook with a bishop is dubious if files are not open, as is the case in the early opening. It requires a grind into an endgame to demonstrate the win, which is hard to do consistently in speed chess, even at this level between 2 fairly evenly matched players. Given that the score was 60/40, the only reason to ban the guy was to protect Danya's reputation.

    • The old fashioned way is to plug the moves into an online engine as you are playing. The new way is to run scripts. Its basically a program that plays for you. Difficult to catch these people because they can turn it on and off.

  • There is NO evidence that he is cheating. Is he probably cheating? yes, but if you have the slightest understanding of statistics, you understand that, as he is repeating the same unorthodox opening, the statistics are unfairly inflated in his disfavour. I have no qualms about him being banned because of statistics, but he should be banned because he is **probably** cheating , and not banned and accused of cheating which is a world of difference.

    • @@epicchess2021 Yeah I just walked through it and the opposing queen is basically checkmated with only one position openly available (g6) then it gets sided by the other queen eventually taking it out but the black bishop takes queen and mates the white knight too. This is honestly the best defense if bait is took as bishops are better than rooks and just creates a long game attrition any attempt to sacrifice your bishops should be avoided at the start of a game

    • No, but you can do that on yourself and then use an engine to win with less material... Im not saying that he cheated... but for many players use the engine in one or two moves is enough to win...

  • The guy is clearly cheating. If you look at the other games, he was doing well until the end game where he messes everything up. The guy is often up many pawns in the end game but he blunders a lot for some reason. The only reason Daniel won is because the other guy is often losing on time and blunders in the end which is very sus.

  • Trying to encourage chess in NZ, as per usual, would you like to participate in an interview on Zoom or the like? I would pay you for your time etc. I can also forward the monies if so desired to a Junior of NZ, or established club on your behalf, where you get the receipt. Just a thought, thank you.

    • I am sure you are right. After all, he's not even in the top 100 players in the world, and is short of being a super GM by 50 points. I don't even know why such a patzer bothers to ever play chess again. Should be ashamed. I could beat him in chess...with a slight handicap where he removes a few pieces. By a few, I mean all of them except his king.

So what positive have YOU done for the chess community? Looking at your cringeworthy comments all I see is a salty pretentious kid.
