What’s a Stylist & How to Become One | Hello Fashion | Kate Young
On this week’s episode, I talk about what a stylist is and does, and speak to several stylists about how they got their start, what they’re looking for in assistants, and what their current job is. To start, I run through my own background, which began in magazines (Vogue, Interview), and call Samira Nasr, now the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, who early in her career worked alongside me as an assistant at Vogue. I also discuss my process of collaborating with fashion brands and how I pull and choose the best looks for my clients.
In addition, I speak with Derek Blasberg, head of fashion and beauty partnerships at KZhead, who also used to work with me at Vogue; Jareg Eng, the founder of Just Jared, who intimately understands the importance of red carpet photos; and the celebrity stylist Jason Rembert, who shares his circuitous path to success.

You have such beautiful and effortless style. I know you love talking about your clients and your choices for them but I would love to hear more about how you choose pieces for yourself, from the clothes to the accessories. Agree with the other reply, it's more about hearing about the process of fabrics and brands you love that are maybe not so well known, maybe fabrics you know work better for certain types, classics you love, etc. Just learning from someone who looks at clothing and accessories all the time for different people as well as for yourself.
As an VIP stylist assistant, I love the way you describe the job. It simplifies it in the best way. Sometimes it feels so intense & overwhelming - but it doesn’t have to be! thank you for making a video like this. I’m a 21 year old college student in LA that is currently studying costume designing. My career goal is to be a celebrity stylist like yourself, I’ve felt discouraged in the past trying to figure out how to get to where I want to be in the fashion industry & this gave me an idea of how things work. Love this channel so much, thank you for the valuable insights and for bringing in so many of your peers! I'm always trying to figure out ways to blend fashion and motorcycling. I see overlap in high fashion shoots but not so much in the day to day, and I think they're two fascinating worlds. Sometimes I feel like I have to sacrifice style for safety when it comes to riding, but there are constant innovations that make the gear better and more interesting to look at each year.

Thank you so much for this, it was fabulously informative and incredibly calming to listen to your perspective gained over the years. I felt like I was taking a bath listening to it! I have not often let myself indulge in the idea that being a stylist is something I could approach or pursue as one career or a part of a branch of career paths but you have inspired me to reconsider! Clothes are material but they're also sensual and intellectual and I think you represent that eloquently.
