Encounter with Orcas at Mathesons Bay, Leigh (New Zealand).
The free diver was on his way back to the shore when he must have seen the Orcas and quickly scrambled out onto the rocks. It seemed like there was at least 4 Orcas around him of which one was a mother with her calf.
The one Orca came very close to shore where the Labrador was busy retrieving sticks from the water. He saw the whale and quickly turned around and swam back to shore with the Orca following as far as he could go.
I like how once the dog reaches safety in shallower waters, the dog turns around and lets the orca know what he thinks of him.
😆💖🐾
The Orca prob was just curious, and never wanted to harm the dog... because even from where the dog was standing he wouldn't have been "safe" nor would have have been able to outswim the Orca.
Except the dog wasn't remotely safe. Orcas can beach themselves to catch prey and then wiggle their way back into the water. It's really cool.
Reach safety? When orca wants it grabs the dog from dry earth
Sure.🙄
Not only the top of the food chain but one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. The Orca is fully capable of making a decision based on needs and circumstance. Had the dog been a seal or penguin then certainly a different story.
Had it been hungry it would've been a different story.
@@ellesnyder942 Yes like all apex preditor's they are oportunistic
@@horse-lover68actually they say killer whales are quite picky of what they eat

Why allow your dog to be in that position. He could easily have been lunch for those orcas.
Orca - “that seal has legs!”
😂 😂
@arrganilaiyg badulaiyg 😂 😂 probably exactly...wtf
Appearently; some orca won't eat seal or any mammals?.
🤣👌
By far the funniest comment
Orca was like "Ohh, he's with the bipedals, better leave him alone"
Not every day an orca sees a dog,it was curious.
CatNadian O yes,but dog LOOK like a sea LIONS ,can be good BREAKFAST for orca 🤔
Well said!
If these are resident Orca's belonging to a pod in the area up north its likely the dog is safe. Resident Orca's tend to eat only fish and other prey items that isn't seals. Transient orca's like those near California pacific coast and heading down towards south America prey on Seal's and other large fauna.
Oooo is that a tasty treat ?
But I laughed when the dog starts swimming for his life and looking back like “wtf is this, damn!”
The orca was clearly just checking the dog out. If it had really wanted to grab the dog, it could easily have done so.
***** have you seen how orca hunt seals on the beach? If they want, they can do the same to the dog.
***** What an idiotic reply. If you think that's an orca's acceleration then maybe you should watch more videos. They're ridiculously fast. If he wanted to get the dog he could have easily. Even if it meant going on the shore a bit, an Orca can easily get itself back off shore regardless of depth. Even look at Sea world for proof of that.
No shit? Fucking idiot. Fuck that dog owner.
Orcas are highly intelligent. They know that the dog is a dog and not a seal. As well as the man. It also is aware that humans are intelligent. And knows as well that the dog belongs to our pod, yes, it knows the dog is mans best friend. Lol.
kzhead.info/sun/mdynccaMa3h4oZ8/bejne.html ojala les guste. Namate.
The dog is so cool! At first it looks like he wants to play with the orca, but finds out it's a tiny weeny bit too big for his comfort, and scrambles to shore. Again he turns to see what the heck that was, sniffing his tail.
@iatealready you ate already
@iatealready that's not very nice ,you unpleasant person.
Why are you narrating?

I know plenty about Orcas but I’d still not let my dog swim with them under any circumstance. They are amazing and powerful enough to do as they please with whatever they feel like. Thankfully some of the wild ones only have a problem with boats
The dog swims to shore full blast like "oh f%$#". Once feet touch ground it turns around and starts barking at it. Ha ha. Too funny
Lol
My lab would do the same
Typical dog behavior, you se it at some humans to hahaha

Majestic and social creatures of the ocean, orcas are incredibly intelligent mammals.
That orca wasnt going to hurt either one. It was just chasing the dog, having fun. I loved how fast that dog was swimming out of there.
Yeah, because terrorized creatures are just the funniest!
Oh if that orca wanted to hurt that dog, it would have taken a second to do. The orca was next to the dog the whole time, even when the dog was in deeper water. It was just curious of the dog. No harm no foul. The man didnt need to freak out either.
@@bholiday6741 the man is a moron he think Orca wont hurt the dog, the Orcas are probing, next time it wont be so lucky for the dog. They hunt Seal larger than dogs.
That's not necessarily true. Orcas just like any other animals unpredictable but without a doubt there are the kings of the sea
It's a creature with the word, "Killer", in its name. It got that name for good reasons cause its a pure killing machine. Yeah, it was probably not hurting the dog or diver at that moment but I truly believe it wasn't playing with it either. It was probing an animal it does not know but after a while and realing that the animal is not a real danger to it then I am sure it will become a meal.
Thats curiosity from the Orca. Being a highly intelligent creature and an apex predator if they want to hunt and make a kill its a different story. They are the largest of the dolphin family and hence this social nature towards others.
It was an infant orca checking out the puppy very lucky dog
I totally agree👍🏼 even the younger Orca’s learn from their parent…wonder if the other Orca was an adult?
@@julieedinger2462 Don't think there's enough meat on a dog for an orca to bother with it.. maybe if it was starving, but when have you seen a starving Orca? Just curious I suppose..
@@planegaper what I have observed from quiet a few videos an listening to expects,,, Orca’s are not aggressive with humans an dogs.. Fish or seals are what they eat….

I really find it hilarious how so many ill-informed people think the orca is actually trying to harm the dog. It's obviously a juvenile and what it's doing is textbook investigative behaviour. If a predator as intelligent and and agile as an orca wanted that dog then the dog wouldn't have got anywhere near the shore. It's a highly intelligent and sociable mammal just investigating something which it isn't used to seeing.
One JUVIE leg tug could do a world of damage. One grab and playfully hold under water could DO a world of damage. ( wildlife rescue/ rehabber )
So you watch Nat Geo I see 😂
I wonder if this many years on, you're still curious. If so, then I offer something you might have missed. It's an Adult and two younger Orcas approaching a swimmer via a shot from a drone camera above. It's exciting for sure...especially when the big Orca plays with the swimmers toes.
kzhead.info/sun/mrqmmcmpoYdmeHA/bejne.html
I don't think it was trying to harm the dog, but I wouldn't take any chances.
Brave dog! My 200 lb mastiff mix saw a seal dive into the water from a rock. With a shriek, he performed a backwards levitation-like leap from ankle deep water to land. 😂
Magnificent, intelligent mammals! 🥰
Yes way more intelligent than some people here!!!😂😂😂
I've done dives and had interaction with orca. First and foremost Orca eat "only" what's in their diet and they don't kill for fun. Orca are born with a "blank state" of what is food? They're taught how and who to hunt through their kinship, dogs nor people are on their menu. These Orca are members of New Zealand's "Resident" population and their diet consist strictly of fish, rays, halibut, herring etc Their sonar is sensitive/advanced enough to identify specific kinds of fish. i.e; Resident Orca love salmon primarily chinook, if chinook were swimming in a shoal with other salmon like coho and sockeye the Orca can differentiate the three. When "wild" Orca interact with beings that are unfamiliar to them like dogs or people they're inquisitive not in a hunting fashion but more from an educational fashion.
absolutely. They have trained palates and acquired tastes like humans. Different orca pods from around the world have different taste preferences. They also have different "accents", meaning their vocalizations sound different depending where in the world they're from. So, basically this is proof of very complex social behaviors that are basically the basis of "culture"
Thx Clear.
Orcas have been known to eat deer that were swimming in open water. I wouldn't be shocked if an Orca learned to eat dogs.
@@Bluenose352 Wow, thanks for the very interesting info!
@@ahumm8280 You're welcome. Forgive me for my response to that person. Sometimes, it bothers me about the misinformation floating around about Orcas. I understand when people want to learn. But, when someone calls other people idiots, and pass wrong info, it sets me off.
Whether Orca eats dogs or NOT, my dog "Stewie" has explained to me in NO uncertain terms that he would be none to pleased should he be swimming away from Orca whilst all I do is video the event!

I guess you would have jumped in 🙄.
maybe dude was an orca expert and knew that his dog was safe? I doubt it
Orca's are incredibly intelligent animals. If you ever watched videos of them storming a beach and taking a seal from land it's fascinating to watch. This orca knew it was not a seal or that dog would of been munched. Orca's have been videoed interacting with swimmers and also protecting them from sharks. I've seen one in person and they are absolutely beautiful creatures.
lol orcas never "protected" a single human from sharks...gtfoh
orcas are known to eat many mammals even things like elk and other non marine mammals. thing is i don't think there's much they target that isn't a pre planned decision which is why i think they don't attack humans.
When you swim with orcas, not one single shark will coming, whales also take off when orcas are around, because Orcas kill whales and sharks, also big white sharks. Whales safe you. There is a lot of drone footage where you can see big sharks fleeing from orcas. In one you see how an orca cuts off the shark's way and another orca rams the shark from the other side. Without this trick, the shark would have escaped. The best footage coming from the yt channel Dr Ingrid N. Vissler. She has been studying orcas for 30 years. She also rescues them when orcas strand. Her video material about orcas is breathtaking.
Had the orca wanted to snack on em, he would of. The Orca was curious.
@@OmarTheAtheistAziz they dont protect humans directly but where there is an orca u can be sure there are no sharks near
I'm surprised they let the dog free. But I'm not really surprised coz I know how smart they are. Awww I love them all the more! ❤
Orca was not hunting the dog, they love mammals like them
they are extremely intelligent and know the difference between whats food and what isnt. they understand what a dog is and that they dont eat them.
@@fabrizioriva1281 What about dolphins that get killed by orca?
@@kelvyndidaskalos547 Yes, indeed their love for mammals is limited to terrestrial mammals. With marine mammals (like seals) their have no compassion at all.
@@fabrizioriva1281 like seals? They really love them 😂
Orcas are awesome. The guy that climbed onto the reef would have been toast if the Orca wanted him. The same for the guy with the phone by the dog. If they can grab a walrus fifteen feet from the water they could take a man standing right at the edge. Incredibly, there may have been a shark in the waters and they were protecting the people, AND the guys dog.
There's never been any recorded attacks on humans in the wild. Only in captivity.
Its not grabbing a man on land lol, it rarely gets an immobile seal
Wow you can really tell the Orca was really tying to figure out what the Dog was 😳
Great footage…..I would have been so scared for my dog!
I like how the dog starts barking after it's in shallow water. Like get off my yard! 😆
This would have been a whole different story had it been a seal or penguin. Orcas are even smarter than most humans and are picky eaters very capable of choosing what they want for food. If the orca wanted the dog he very well could have got it since orcas are one of the fastest marine animals capable of reaching top swimming speeds of 50mph while the dog was swimming at 3mph it looks like. Bottom line is that the ocean is the orcas yard since they are apex predators and have almost no enemies besides the sperm whale.
If the Orca wanted to kill either the dog or man it could have easily. They're ridiculously fast swimmers and the dog was swimming so slow, and the man was on a rock that was easily accessible. They were just curious. There isn't a single thing in the entire ocean that could kill an Orca, (apart from humans) it's the ultimate predator, if it wanted to kill either of them, they'd be dead, simple as that.
bingo
Sleek Fx hmm... well as as far as humans go, so long as you're wearing a scuba suit, or anything covering your skin, the jellyfish is essentially harmless. I wonder if it's venom would be effective against an Orca though..
The United Stand {Alex} Pretty sure sperm whales can kill orcas. At the very least, orcas give them a wide berth.
The United Stand {Alex} True that.. Orcas can accelerate up to 30 miles an hour in a second..
They had probably full tummies. They had just eaten.
glad the dog is OK , when I saw him turn his head and that Finn was right behind him I thought it was going to get ugly, but thank God he got out !!
Naaaa.
I have a lab and every time I see this I tear up🥹
Dog: "Ooh SH%t!" Orca: "What's that smell?"
Orcas don't have a sense of smell
Orca: "Damn, here I thought it was a seal." "Welp, have a good day, sir."
Sorry orcas are lot smarter than that. You are talking from the human perspectives. 😁
If you're not a seal, sting ray, shark, you're not on the menu and will probably be okay. Unless, of course, they're in captivity and aggressive and then you're on your own.

Swimming dog: “Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.” On land dog: “Do you want some?!”
The orca at Sea World that killed a trainer, broke her pelvis by ramming her, as she tried swimming away. That's incredible acceleration and speed in the confines of a pool, or tank. There's no dog or man in existence, that if in the water with an orca, gets away if that orca doesn't let them go. None.

It’s eery when an Orca swims Up and Looks You in the Eyes. My Buddy Swam with them in Costa Rica and He said you can clearly tell They’re thinking and Talking to each other, and they had individual personalities. He said Most were Not Friendly or cared to interact with People also
It's amazing how smart Orcas really are. They either are not seal hunters or they can distinguish the difference between a dog and a seal.
I think they knew it wasn’t a seal. The Orca was definitely close enough to grab the dog or the diver for that matter. He may have felt save on that rock, but I’ve seen them grab seals right off the beach. You’re right they are extremely intelligent and equally curious.
they totally can tell de different, with their echolocalization they can even spot and distinguish the precise species of salmon they like, from miles and miles away
It wasn't chase, it was curiosity and play. Orca is much more faster than man and dog in water są easily could kill them
Indeed. It would be like Usain Bolt wanting to catch a turtle stuck in glue that is trying to get away. That's the kind of mismatch we are talking about here.

@@epic103 Yes if they are agitated but typically we see that more from captive stressed orcas. Orcas are very intelligent and selective predators. In the wild they are much more relaxed and they stick to their preferred prey and that doesn't include dogs nor humans.

Orcas can pass speeds of 35 miles an hour. That be said, the dog was swimming awfully slow. And they easily could've reached the diver on the rocks. They were simply curious, and wanted to check them out. I agree with the divers instinct though. Just because they seem nice doesn't mean they'll always be that way. That being said, well done, for getting the hell out of there. Lol

The dog knew there weren’t trying to hurt him. Both animals sensed each other. What a beautiful moment.
Our family was here when this unfolded in front of us. Majestic spectacle, so much happening in just a couple of minutes. An old man went into the ocean to go for a swim, he was not worried about the orca’s swimming in the bay. The dog owner threw a stick in the water, it appeared that he wanted his dog to go back into the water so he could film the orca’s and his dog again! Unbelievable
I was looking at him laughing and filming and thinking what a tosser he looked like. I’m very aware that orcas don’t hurt people, but I would not be confident my black Labrador wouldn’t get mistaken for a seal. I mean mine thinks she is a seal! I definitely wouldnt have been laughing and would have wanted to get her out of the water. Obviously the orca was curious and decided it wasn’t food, but personally wouldn’t want to take that risk with my dog. And I am someone who’s dream it is to swim with orcas. But my dog can skip that Thankyou 🫣

The dog was not at risk. Orca's are highly intelligent and picky hunters. Example: some killer whales will ONLY dine on blue whale tongue. There's also been no known case of a human being attacked or hunted by a wild orca. That includes dogs.
OMG, I have so much to say on this! First and foremost, the Orcas were merely curious as to the free diver. With that being said, the free diver was very lucky he was NOT a snack once he was on the rocks. I say as much because although the orcas is one of the most intelligent animals in the sea, they are also predatory. Now they do NOT look at humans as a food source. With that being said, they do NOT look at us and think, "Oh another human, let's play" They are intensely curious of the diver and underwater it is clear he is not a food source. However when he was on the rocks sitting like that, he looks almost identical to the Orca as a Sea Lion. I do NOT know for certain but I believe that an Orca's eye sight outside of water is not as clear as within the water. Accordingly, we have all seen archival footage of killer whales powering themselves out of the water and almost beach themselves to snatch a Seal / Sea lion. With regard to the dog, lucky dog and if the animal wanted the dog it would have. The animal was merely curious. It is almost comical to see the dog scared SH*TLESS, but once out of the water almost like, come on bring it!! (LOL) Finally , it is heart warming to see what the dog did at the very end. When the child enters the picture, the dog went into instant protective mode and got between the Orca and the child. Orcas are on the absolute top of the food chain in the wild, but it "appears" that this animal has the ability to feel compassion equal to its predatory nature. I am ashamed of what we as a species have done to this majestic animal. I hope to see in my lifetime that we return those in captivity to the sea from which they came. However, I fear that the vast majority of captive Orcas were actually born into captivity. Yes there are some that were born in the wild. Yet I believe they could be reintroduced through an exhaustive reintegration effort utilizing sea pens. It must cost millions to train these animals but I am skeptical as to how an Orca would be able to sign a waiver and a contract without a booking agent. Accordingly, we should spend the money to reintegrate these animals and hopefully see the past (Sea World) as barbaric. Disclaimer*** I am not an Orca expert nor am I a scientist. Additionally the waiver and booking agent are of course merely in jest'
oh it's just curious, but they were lucky not to be eaten. no it's a large predator and people are made of meat. don't fucking play with them.
oh and whales have been known to eat animals swimming by such as moose deer and wolves anything really.
Lol, orcas do not eat and kill wolves, moose or deer. Those are all land mammals. The orcas would have to beach themselves in order to reach those animals. Fact: the only orcas that beach themselves to hunt prey is in Argentina where they hunt sea lions and seals. Fact: no human has been killed by an orca in the wild. Fact: orcas plan and orchestrate their hunting techniques. If the orcas wanted to kill that dog they would have.

They are so intelligent and seem intrigued by humans and dogs , they're no creditable threat towards humans in the wild only in captivity
Now the important question: who let the dog out?
0:56 dog's reaction to being chased.poor pup was so terrified.
Near where I live a seal attacked and killed a Dog, there is no way I would let a dog swim with Orcas, you “can never be sure”.
How does an Orca distinguish food (seal, fish, or whale) from other things? Is' it the fat in seals and the fish smell?
That dog is more lucky than it realises . It looks similar to a seal and Orcas devour them with gusto .
