What musical tropes make sci-fi music recognizable?
Anyone who’s seen a science fiction movie knows the importance of sound for creating a believable environment. Sci-fi's power is in taking you to another world, and thus its music must reflect that. If done right, the mix of typically larger-than-life movie sonics is combined with unique textures and tones of explorative sound design, creating an aurally stunning experience. It's quite broad in terms of tropes, but sticking to terms that are associated with the style we can recall theremin, synthesizer, Sliding Synth sound, echo. Sounds found on an atmospheric soundtrack may use instruments that are soothing, emotive, minimalist, epic, and unobtrusive.
Electronic music in film arguably began with the use of the theremin, as exemplified in the classic extraterrestrial visitation film The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). In Bernard Herrmann’s score, the instrument is set atop a largely orchestral score typical of the era, with a wide vibrato that, at times, makes the sound difficult to distinguish from an open-vowel vocal from a soprano opera singer.
One of the more obtuse but interesting uses of technology in sci-fi film is how quickly we adopted synthesized sounds into our vision of the future since they represent the obvious sound of the future. Still, the use of the instrument begat our fascination with representing the otherworldly (i.e., aliens, UFOs, and other extraterrestrial concepts) with markedly otherworldly sounds.
One of the ways sci-fi scores have kept pace with film scoring at large is in the increasing use of ethnic percussion and instrumentation over the past decade.
Today, of course, synths pervade much of film’s sonic landscape, though frequently still in tandem with classical, romantic orchestral writing.
For this volume of the concentration Sci-Fi Chillstep playlist, we have made a selection of music steeped in the dark atmosphere of the future. It is primarily designed for productive and enjoyable coding. Captivating space music in this mix will be helpful during the programming session, as well as any other kind of work. Tune in, let our cyber mix help you through a difficult day, and enjoy the music.

    • Most intelligent folks find it harder to sleep at night, so the time awake is used on projects or work in the late hours. The brains that think too much stay up the longest. Nighttime is also a time more isolated than daylight, and it may be the darkness that lets down the walls in our imagination and bring dreams to the fore.

  • We are the hackers, builders, tinkerers, creators, and the ones who imagine the things that could be... in a global society that tries to keep up with the brightest minds in the world. We are the ones who allow for societies to thrive during daylight and allow for sleeping heads to rest assured that tomorrow will unlock even more possibilities. Without us, human life becomes dormant and ceases to exist. Don't stop being you and doing the great things you do because the rest of us need you to keep this world spinning for the generations to come. Pass on your skills, your job trades, and your life lessons to those in need because we won't be here for long. The coming generations should be smarter and better equipped than us right now. Give them the tools to thrive but never stop being you!

    • @Rakan Khalid Truth is a simple concept of binary, 1 or 0. Everything else is not "a truth", especially religious writings are mostly meant as guidance for society. And i beg do differ ... we are creators, but not Gods. Thats a question of morality, a skill we created with the build of society to overcome our instincts. Creatures don't have such a concept, they only have instincts.

    • I already beat you on that note; I suffered from an apparent seizure or two back in 2018 just after Turkey Day, and then when my [literally NEW] supervisor came over to my condo looking for me, she and the maintenance guy found me asleep, yet unable to wake me up. (I think I was on the kitchen floor?) Then when I did wake up the following Tuesday, I got ready for work...drove out to Carswell AFB...and I will be damned that I actually got through the security gate [I highlight that fact because I was literally the ONLY person on base who kept my CAC in the middle console of my car vs my wallet like literally EVERYONE ELSE] and then I drove all the way across base to the 301st FW. And apparently I drove around in the parking lot for umpteen minutes because someone from inside eventually recognized my car going back and forth out there, so that person called my supervisor. She came out and got me over to the PA office, and then she started asking me about the day beforehand. Obviously that did not go so well, and she could tell something was not right with my condition. She got ahold of my parents, and they came out there to pick me up, and they took me to Harris Hospital, which they were to busy to even take me in. By midnight, my parents took me to their place, and the next morning they took me to Baylor Hospital instead, and that was where they determined I was suffering from a seizure. (And then for kicks, after being ruled I could no longer live on my own, my parents took me into their place, and needless to say, because of the UTTER and SHEER STRESS I get from being around my mom, I suffered from three more seizures in a span of five days. Ever since then, I have been stuck over in a retirement facility...the youngest person here by 35±40 years.)

Something I'm trying right now that is awesome is , I am playing a slow lead with this as a backing track . It's so much fun - specifically a lead line improvised on my Harmony 1966 Sovereign 6 string acoustic guitar . Thank you !!!
