"Ten minutes after I jumped into the Pacific Ocean, I inhaled several cups of sea water and was kicked in the face. It was going pretty well for my first competitive swim. I hadn’t died of hypothermia or lost my legs to a shark attack. So that was a win."

  • In 2018 great white shark attacked a seal 50 feet from the alcatraz tour docks. Entire attack was caught on camera from a a docked tour boat.I wonder how many swam that year.

  • Those waters aren’t ACTUALLY infested with sharks. It was as just a myth told to prisoners to prevent them from escaping. I love the idea of this, and definitely would wanna do it!

  • That water’s cold and they can only swim during slack tide. During an ebb tide they’d all be taken out to sea. I wonder if the escapees knew the tide schedule? Plus, they had a raft.

    • There has never been a documented white shark attack in San Francisco Bay. There are white sharks that periodically enter and exit The Bay but most shark activity is out in the Pacific Ocean.

  • From what I've heard about the bay area and former alcatraz swimmers, most sharks prefer the salt water and it's a mix of salt and fresh water in the bay. You will most likely only see tiger sharks who are scavengers and won't bother people. Any other shark would stay deep in the salt water.
