In 2018 great white shark attacked a seal 50 feet from the alcatraz tour docks. Entire attack was caught on camera from a a docked tour boat.I wonder how many swam that year.

Those waters aren’t ACTUALLY infested with sharks. It was as just a myth told to prisoners to prevent them from escaping. I love the idea of this, and definitely would wanna do it!

You're right the waters aren't "infested with sharks", but there're sharks in the bay, including Great Whites at times.

This looks unreal! I used to love swimming but my obsession with lifting weights kind of killed that. I’ve slimmed down now and honestly might try to make this a bucket list!!!!
That water’s cold and they can only swim during slack tide. During an ebb tide they’d all be taken out to sea. I wonder if the escapees knew the tide schedule? Plus, they had a raft.

It's crazy to think that Nick Diaz did this 5 times by himself, the Diaz brother might be annoying and over the top at times but they're a force to be reckoned with.

The danger of sharks is real, but they have people in boats patrolling to greatly deter them.
There has never been a documented white shark attack in San Francisco Bay. There are white sharks that periodically enter and exit The Bay but most shark activity is out in the Pacific Ocean.

@That one guy Yeah if you don’t put yourself in that situation. Because if that’s true, explain the attack on those marines back in 1912 or 1916 when they were all eaten by sharks because their ship was blown up and they had to sit in the sea and wait for help.

This is a big reason why I think The Anglin’s (I think that’s how you spell it) and Morris made it after the escape from Alcatraz
Those swimmers did it during the day. The prisoners did it at night. The sharks are more active at night.

I waded in the Pacific Ocean and it's very cold in the Summer too! the currents are very strong and undertows would be something to fear swimming in the bay.

I swim there, im only a kid (12) so its pretty easy with practice but first time is really hard, also nobody has been killed by a shark on that swim

From what I've heard about the bay area and former alcatraz swimmers, most sharks prefer the salt water and it's a mix of salt and fresh water in the bay. You will most likely only see tiger sharks who are scavengers and won't bother people. Any other shark would stay deep in the salt water.

@@markmontana90 I watched a recent interview with someone who did the swim this past year. I believe it was through myswimpro's KZhead channel. This is what they stated in the video... they're mostly scavengers.
@@AJ-bu4yv tigers are known to attack humans and one of the more aggressive shark species. I wouldn’t take my chances anyway not sure if you would.

It's more safe in a big group like this with boats around. But if someone would have tried to escape back in the day he would be alone swimming and the sharks would have noticed him !
