HOW WE SEE PORTUGAL (2 Years After Moving Here From UK)

We're Ricky & Victoria - we're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead.
2 years ago we sold our house, left the UK & moved to Portugal with the dream of enjoying a life in the sun. After 2 years of living here, we reflect on our experiences (the good & the bad) & ask ourselves, "if we could do it all again, would we still move to Portugal?".
Please LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoy it & SUBSCRIBE if you want to follow our journey as we bring this farm back to life! Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊

  • Dear Rick and Vicky, thank you for your video and kindness. As a Portuguese, I am humbled by your honest view of my country. God knows we are far from perfect, and many things in Portugal 🇵🇹 need to improve, however, which country is perfect?! We are trying, and will never give up trying for this country needs to continue alive. Still we know we need to change in many ways, and hopefully, the arrival of new residents such as yourselves, will help us make this little/big country better for all. Hence, why it is so important you learn Portuguese. Not just to improve your daily comings and goings, but to teach many other things, such as instill in some the fact that animals should not be chained all day! 🙈😩 . To be honest, some do it to protect other lives as maybe the animal is aggressive or anti social, but so are many humans, yet we not chain them, do we? 😱 As for the insanely hot weather in Summer, yeah, I hate it too, but the key is to enjoy the many local fluvial rivers and take a break in the afternoon. To take it easy here means exactly that, so stay away from the sun from 1pm to 3pm, have a leisure lunch, get a snooze and it will get better. As for shopping, well... it has gotten expensive and variety here is limited but for a 10 million big (give or take) nation, there can only be so much diversity in products, or businesses just go under with unsold inventory. For celiac issues, I would attempt buying appropriate products online, or by shopping at a larger nearby town once a month, and also buying in bulk. Thank you for having chosen 🇵🇹. We hope we never let you down. 🙏🤗❤️🇵🇹

It’s true that we have many issues to face and change, but it really is a beautiful and fantastic country. It’s lovely to see people like you coming here and wanting to help us fix some real problems and enjoy our country. We are a proudfull people, very welcoming in general, but especially to those wanting to integrate in our culture and participate in bettering our country. And good for you for choosing a rural area, they really need more young people to be able to go and stay there. I hope that, at the time of your viewing this comment, you are still enjoying living here. I will be checking some more of your videos.

    • How refreshing to read the friendly and accepting comments and replies of the Portuguese readers, even to observations or comments that could be deemed critical of Portugal, or the Portuguese people. What a difference to the situation in Spain. Unfortunately it is not just the Spanish government that is terrible, the Spanish people are "generally" extremely racist, arrogant and rude. In the event that you choose to live in Spain, be prepared to be treat as a second class citizen. Even for those foreigners who are intelligent, affluent and have taken the time to be fluent in the Spanish language, and made the effort to fully integrate into their adopted country. Any criticism of Spain or the Spanish people, no matter how justified, will generally be met by a reply of "if you don't like it, go back to your own country". If the before mentioned is not negative enough; with regard to animal cruelty, Spain is one of the worst countries in the world. Many Spanish people have a sedistic love of inflicting pain, suffering and even torturing animals. It is unfortunately part of their culture and character. As I am soon moving to Portugal after 23 years living in Spain, I am hoping that the situation in Portugal, especially regarding treatment of animals, is better than in Spain, and where there are unfortunate cases, it is more a case of neglect due to ignorance, rather than outright and deliberate cruelty. I am also hoping that the situation in Portugal regarding animal welfare will improve with the influx and influence of foreigners, rather than be told to mind our own business, and that this is their country, and they can do whatever they want, as is the case in Spain.

At Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool, the number of children attending A&E for dog bites tripled during the first Covid lockdown. More alarmingly, this year will be the worst for dog-related deaths!So the last thing we want in Portugal is to take your advise about how to take care of dogs or other animals!I absolutely agreed with what you said in this vlog but on the other hand I'm not saying that we are perfect here Portugal far from it, your love for animals well been in UK is death wish!Very sad to comprehend how many more baby's and humans need to die for your government to put a End to this madness!Just any observation from a Portuguese who absolutely loves UK!

    • Hi H D. I'm Imani from Atlanta and my husband and I are considering coming to Portugal in June to explore and decide if it's someplace we can settle. My husband and I both retired. I've always wanted to have a 5th wheel or RV. How do you feel not knowing the area, language or roads manuvering, getting around in new country in an RV?

    • G. Imani Leonard, To be honest it is also the financial independence we have now. It is definitly also a reason we like it here. Prices of the houses in the Netherlands where rising skyhigh. On the best moment we sold our house there and bought a much cheaper house here. We still have to be carefull with money. You never know what can happen. But as it looks now we (59 yrs) can easely live here without working. But when you are younger it's another story I guess. To find work without speaking the language is not easy. You have to have a commercial mindsetting in advance to start your own business. A lot of people simply don't have that commercial instinct (and don't have money on the bank) and find out that they can hardly survive. In our area it's like a lot of foreighners try to earn money with yoga, massage, healing etc. But when everyone is trying to jump into the same business in a small group of potential customers...Some people don't mind to have luxery but at least you have to eat and pay all the basic needs.

  • I was delighted to see your video! You guys are honest and forthcoming! I was born in Portugal in 1959 and immigrated in 1974! I was so delighted that you enjoy Portuguese people and their warmth! I try to reflect that in the country I live in, Canada! Although it's not like my home I adapted, but I miss my homeland huge! I can't wait to go back and visit! I know the country from North to South that I traveled in 1979! I know it's different now but I also know the people didn't change because I keep abreast of the news! Anyway guys, I hope you find success, hope and happiness in "our" Portugal! All the best! And you just got yourselves a subscriber! Felicidades e sucesso!

  • Também sou inglês e tou a viver em Portugal ha quase 6 anos. Tou a viver no norte, no distrito do Porto.

    • Great job on your Portuguese! I know quite a few foreigners who have lived in Portugal for longer than that before they could say a full sentence (let alone write one). You've also (nearly) mastered one of the most difficult aspects of Portuguese, the difference between the verbs "ser" and "estar" (by the way, although we pronounce "'tou bem" and "'tás a ver?", it's written "estou bem" and "estás a ver?"). Now, back to Portuguese. Vi o teu video de apresentação e, como aprendeste português no Brasil, tens naturalmente o sotaque e pronúncia de lá. Que dificuldades tiveste na compreensão do português de Portugal? Eu sei que esse é também um desafio para muitos brasileiros quando cá chegam.

      @jpsilva1971@jpsilva1971 Жыл бұрын
    • @@jpsilva1971 Obrigado João. Obviamente, foi muito mais fácil para mim, adaptar-me ao português de Portugal, do que seria o caso com a maioria dos britânicos enquanto ja tinha aprendido a falar Português anos atras quando estava no brasil. Então, adaptar-me aos diferenças do vocabulário foi fácil - fiambre, e não presunto, autoclismo e não descarga, autocarro e não ônibus, e assim por diante... nada dificil. Também acostumou-me facilmente a dizer, por exemplo "estou a andar" e não "estou andando". O maior desafio era, e continua a ser, perceber o que estou a ouvir. Os Portugueses falam rápido, de fato falam tão rápido como se estivessem com tanta pressa que nem tivessem tempo para pronunciar as vogais. As vezes eu pede aos pessoas "repetir mais de vagar, por favor". E, imediatamente, eles percebem que não sou Português e ja começam a falar comigo em inglês, assim a conversa continua em inglês, e eu não aprendo nada.

We are and always were a litle and poor country witlh, since the late centuary an alarming decrease of population (see the results of 2021 Census), with a gentle and old population and very very bad politicians.The interior of our country is empty and the same hapens in Spain. "Nuestros hermanos" call their interior landscape "la España vazia" and they are right. That's why I thank you so very much from all my heart for choosing our country to live.God bless you.
