Sonny Liston never looked pissed off. He always looked bothered or just like he was doing business. I can't even imagine what it would have been like for an opponent across a boxing ring if he actually lost his shit and really got pissed off. He was such an awesome boxer and what a wrecking machine when he connected.

0:25 man that was the most intimidating stare i've ever seen
Arms like tree trunks, stocky build and a stare that says "I'm only going one way, right through you." Definitely more intimidating than any other fighter. He broke down Williams who was possibly the most physically perfect boxer, musculature wise and that death glare he gave Henry Clark would have KOed me before the fight even started.
Shadowsnake 89 I think Sonny would have out intimidated Tyson. as you say that stare was quite frankly terrifying. not quite sure how Ali managed to keep it together
Ultraviolet Films Ali said he was scared too lol
Liston would be a absolute nightmare for Tyson and deffo would’ve out intimidated him same goes for Foreman against Tyson aswell
@@UltravioletFilms Tyson was afraid of everything
Liston while solid was, despite the weigh in - was the smaller guy. Ali was taller, and able to tie him up. After that it was hit him with hard shots and tie him up. Was he afraid of Liston, he would be an idiot if he wasn't. The better question is was Liston afraid of Ali..... he should have been. Second fight Liston wanted nothing to do with it.
That handshake with Floyd, he just holds his hand and stares him down😐
Sonny Liston is so underrated. He was a force of nature in the heavyweight division. He was also a genetic freak, 6'0 tall with a 7 foot wingspan and 16 inch fists (largest in boxing history).

Highest ape index ever
A magnificent fighter. Sonny Liston had everything- strong build, wingspan of a 7 footer, the greatest jab in history, knockout power in both hands and a natural killer instinct.
You could tell how afraid Floyd Patterson was from press to bell. Never looked Liston in the eye.
His knees were shaking as he walked to the ring. Could barely walk up the ring steps. But when reporters were making fun of Floyd for being afraid on the flight back to Philadelphia, Sonny shut them up and said “everybody is afraid, he had the courage to get in the ring despite that fear, he’s no coward!”
Sure Liston himself was intimidating and all, but I think was was really scariest about fighting Liston, was that his reach was 213cm, and he was only 185cm tall. That means his reach was longer than Deontay Wilder's, who is 201cm tall. Liston's reach was longer than a man's who was 16cm taller than him!
Plus he had those 15 1/2 inch fists at the end of those long arms.

Patterson was never scared of him. If he was he wouldn't have fought him twice. Everyone advised him not to fight liston but he went ahead anyways
That left jab is definitly the best in heavyweight history. Sonny was almost forgotten after the ali fights, but he is a all time great. No doubt about that
Liston was a great boxer with natural brute strength, size, incredible reach, and excellent left jab - probably the most powerful jab in history. These alone made him intimidating but even more so he was an expert in using leverage and momentum to put his entire body into his punches - even his jab. Watch how he twists his hips and pushes off his back foot with his jab to rearrange facial structure, internal organs, and crush bones. The scariest thing about Liston was his calm demeanor and black "shark" eyes that silently screamed "I'm not here to just win. I'm here to literally kill you." It's true fighters feel some degree of fear before fighting anyone but Liston may be the sole exception. There isn't any fear in his eyes - in fact it's even more frightening that his icy stare almost has a "sense" of sorrow for his opponent - just a sense though - because mercy was something he showed no one. There will never be another Liston.
@Shim Bro Very sad.
Smh... Floyd Patterson couldn't even look him in his eyes he was so terrifying!! True legend!!
Yes, and as a huge Sonny fan, I actually feel sorry for Floyd. He knew he was destined to get a severe beating from Sonny and lose. But it was JFK and the media that pressured him to fight. Floyd wanted none of Sonny.
@@khoshaba-cr3oiFloyd didn't wanted to fight him obviously, but it's what he had to do as a champ and he faced Sonny, fear or not in the way. That's why he's a legend. Even his trainer Cus tried to convince him not to fight him.

Sonny Is the true legend.
The most terrifying man ever
The forgotten G.O.A.T
From the video it's clear to see where George Foreman gets his punching technique from. Tremendous rotation and leverage in nearly every strike. Their technique acted as a type of "force multiplier" for the natural strength and raw power that these two fighters were born with. The boxers that attempted to stand and slug it out with Listen and Foreman paid a price for it.
Look at 1.51. Liston shakes hands with the Heavy Weight Champion and makes it look like an elder shaking hands with a young boy. His hands were huge.
0:20 Ali looks scared........ya would be though wouldnt ya?! I love the use of intimidation in combat sports.

Liston kills louis to big louis was slow amd very flat footed
@@vlLEGTxSQUADX Your right. Louis would have never seen such a boxer in his life like Liston. The Reach alone would have caused problems. Then the power behind the jab as well. Then the strength of Liston would also cause problems; and he could bo and wave and slip punches as well in his prime.
Sonny is still, even with something of a revival, one of the most underrated boxers of all time. He was ancient by the time he fought Ali, not to mention the fights may have been fixed. One of the most talked about and admired Ali performances was against Cleveland Williams. But Williams prior to this had been shot and a portion of his insides removed - go look it up. He was nowhere near the Cleveland Williams he was prior to this incident - Liston beat him in his prime, when Williams was a monster - knocked him out, twice. Even at that time, Liston was probably a bit over the hill.
💯 would say that was prime Liston though, that was his best performance.
1:45---Poor Floyd...he looked scared to death. The same look Mike Spinks had during the referees instruction in the Tyson fight.
Agreed
And look how Sonny glare right in the camera.
@@MidoseitoAkage what's even scarier is that he's not losing for the camera. That's just a look of hate and disregard. That's just his mindset, he happened to look at the camera. Most fighters pose and act tough for the fight. Liston doesn't care to pose, he doesn't even seem to care about the fighter he's fighting. He just wants to let the hate in him out into whoever is in front of him. His anger is also tinged with lots of sadness. Makes it even scarier to me. On the other hand, Patterson just seems like a pretty boy fighting for the crowd

Liston was the ultimate best
before george foreman and mike tyson there was sonny liston the god of intimidation
You don't just have an intimidating look from nothing. Sonny's harsh upbringing prepared him emotionally for the worst. He might have been in some ways desensitised to violence and his record is an indicator for that before he became a boxer. Secondly, because he overpowered men in prison and later beat in the ring his physical prowess and self-confidence gave him that totally unimpressed, calm yet predatory-like persistent, piercing and focus look. When people see that look they know they aren't in control anymore and it is unsettling.

What a strange and sad ending for what I definitely consider an all time great. He was Tyson and Foreman all in one dude with a glare that would cut a hole in you.I'l never forget reading where when Ali leading up to the first fight had been taunting Liston endlessly but often from a save distance and on one occasion got close enough for Liston to grab him and pull him close and whisper menacing in Ali's ear that he would kill him right there if he did not cut it out and Ali desperately trying to escape his grasp while yelling let me go ,man.and looking around for help. Finally Liston let him go all the while grinning like a cheshire cat knowing he spooked the challenger good.I can't vouch for the accuracy of this story but it speaks to Liston's ability to scare the hell out of you.

When Foreman started his PRO career after 1968, Liston became a sparring partner for him. Foreman said " The only fighter who I could not back up in my entire career was Sonny Liston".
Didn't Liston train Foreman. Liston had a sparring match with Foreman, and Foreman got knocked out in the first when Liston was like 49 and Foreman was 20.
My favorite fighter of all time, Mr. Sonny Liston. It is most unfortunate to see so many negative comments regarding Floyd Patterson. The two fights that he had against Sonny, are the very reason Floyd was truly deserving of the HOF. He knew he would lose, and yes, he admitted to being afraid. A coward though, he was not. Floyd went against everyone's advice, including JFK himself, and was seemingly the only person who publically treated Sonny with dignity, and respect. The only one who saw Sonny as a human being. After both fights, there were more than a few people that found out very quickly that if you wanted to piss Sonny Liston off, all you had to do was denigrate Floyd Patterson in front of him. Anyone stupid enough to do so, knew immediately that Sonny was not going to brook any japes made at Floyd's expense. Great video, thank for putting it together!
So true, Patterson deserves credit for stepping between the ropes twice, knowing very well he will lose. And yes he treated him with respect, which a lot of pathetic journalists from the time, should have done themselves. RIP to both men.

Liston is one of the only boxers who I would literally be too scared the fight. Alot of fighters I would want to fight just to expierience it, like muhammed ali, tyson fury, joe frazier, floyd mayweather, manny paquio etc. But I feel like Sonny Liston came into the ring with the intention to truly *hurt* his opponents. Not to KO, not to even win by decision, but to *truly* want to hurt them
Liston was a good man. A good man doesn’t like or want to hurt someone. Liston was a business man in the harshest world. A fighter that like to hurt his opponent is more Jon Jones aka a sociopath
Floyd Patterson knew he was gonna get ktfo
So did his manager .
The most underrated boxer....just imagine rocky Marciano never had to face this man or Joe Louis never had to face him....only Ali could have outclassed Liston and nobody
In terms of dishing it out, he might be a top 3-5 heavyweight. The fights to Ali hurt and not so much because he lost but how he lost.
