  • Confirmed! Thanks for the tips! I used the bubble float technique but after noticing the mullet feeding on the bottom close in, i snipped of the bubble float and put 3x ssg split shot instead and nailed one 2nd cast. 53cm beast 💪 cheers 🍻

  • They are frustrating buggers, well done John. The old saying if you can see them you won't catch them 🤣🤣🤣

  • Sent this to my boy. He once came on a big shoal of Greys out spinning a tidal stream near Newborough beach on Anglesey. He broke a Mepps up and rammed a piece of Tracker Bar between the two bare hooks and free-lined it, after an hour or so he took one about 5-6lb. I cleaned it and BBQed it after removing about a pound of sea lettuce from the gut...We used to be able to take Bass back then but my son still rates his Grey Mullet over charcoal as the tastiest of all, far less bony than the Red Mullet, too. Thanks again for this John.

    • - I've only eaten mullet once and it tasted a little muddy for me. A 6lb fish must have given him some serious fight!! Well done that man.

  • Well done John. I fished a few times myself for mullet and managed to hook one but never landed it as it broke me off when it swam round a steel beam. Their not the easiest of fish to catch." So well done to you. Also keep up with those great video's. Even though iam a very experienced angler myself." Iam still picking up tips here and there even after 46 years of fishing. 👍

    • Matt Webster - That’s brilliant Matt, I’m glad the vid was useful for you. I keep telling folks “Every day is a school day”! I love learning new things. I mention in the vid about using a stronger hooklength as I have lost a few fish from them running under boat hulls or pontoons and breaking me off. They are a frustrating fish to target. A big trick I have found is feeding them until they are confident. 👍🏻🎣

  • In Florida we sometimes use a sabiki rig with a swivel at the top small weight at the bottom for casting and chumming with chicken feed mixed with rolled oats.

  • Very similar to a trout . in some respects quality catch indeedy . Jimmy Arnott a person whom was friends with my Grandad . He was a fisherman he said to once "If your able to see the fish they are able to see you" And when your approaching water to fish , walk lightly .. because the vibration travels through the water and the fish are able to sense it . At the time you don't wether to believe it or not when your 14 . As time passed I learned to believe it when looking in the burn the trout would see you and just scarper to a hole in the wall .

    • colintraveller - Mullet are an oddity. They can be anything from brazen to down right skittish. Some days they are on it. Others they won’t touch a bait.

  • Another top effort and a cracking reward in the end. They come about a mile up my local river in summer and in good numbers but I've not fished for them before (for the reasons you mention!). Maybe I'll give them a go this year, great work. Shame about the Howells.

    @dukeonthewater@dukeonthewater6 жыл бұрын
    • dukeofmodena - They are a definite “effort vs reward” fish. I feel it’s a better catch if you really had to work for it. They’re great fun on light gear when you can hook them. And the Howells are a lovely pair. They just didn’t have much sympathy for a man shin deep in harbour mud trying to land a mullet.haha.

  • In 30 years of fishing I've only ever landed one in France 🇫🇷 St malo marina and I had 10 misses and the one I hooked was when my mother called me and said it was Time to start boarding the boat as it was a Time killer at the end of a family holiday and I used a set up like the wagler rig similar to the one you've got and I had 3 tiny lead shot under a tiny float and 3 ft of 6 lb line, I knew the frustration that day as I must have missed atleast 10 takes cuz they are so nervous and fussy but I did finally hook and landed a 3 n half pounder it was great after years payed off

    • Robert Mortimore - The John Wilson was an 11-13ft originally. But as it suffered an accident it’s more like 10ft 6” 😳 The other is more like 9ft I think.

  • Hi John. Really enjoying your vids. My son in law has a rib berthed at Mylor and there’s some big mullet around the pontoons there. Just one question, why are you using 12lb hooklength with 6lb mainline ? Why not use 6lb straight through if the fish are finicky. Also if you have a break the 6lb will go first leaving the fish with your 12lb rig attached ! ....not a Criticism, just curious.

    @grahamlaverack1078@grahamlaverack10785 жыл бұрын
    • Graham Laverack - the thought behind the higher breaking strain hooklength is more for the abrasion resistance incase the fish dives past a boat hull or pontoon. The majority of snap offs I’ve had are in the first 2ft. I used 12 because it was what I had at home 10lb would have done just as well. 👍🏻🎣

      @TheFishLocker@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
    • - until this last year I have had my boat at mylor. And have enjoyed some cracking mullet fishing up there. There are some real pigs hiding around up there under the pontoons. 😉
