  • Hey Luwig, I hope you see this comment. My parents were dog breeders and I have lived with and trained dogs my whole life. When a dog goes from being okay with people to progressively getting worse there is usually a cause. I first noticed he puts his ears back when your talking to him and ran away when you moved your hand toward him. It seems like he was afraid to get "bopped" or something similar. I am fearful someone in your house may be interacting with swift in a way that stresses him out and makes him uncomfortable, leading to this worsening behavior.

    @Iceman5920@Iceman59202 жыл бұрын
    • Maybe but they should try and use positive reinforcement to get him used to things like knocking and being around people. I hope maybe he’s just stressed/anxious for some other reason cause I’d hate for that to be the reason.

      @rudrambudholia499@rudrambudholia4992 жыл бұрын
    • Just hopping on here with a similar background -- my mother is a dog trainer who mostly works with fearful dogs and I've also been involved with dogs and dog behavior pretty much my whole life. Something I think is important to note here (in addition to what Iceman said) is that while a dog's world overlaps with people's, they don't process things the same way we do. Meaning that if Swift is reacting to someone's behavior in the house, it likely isn't intended to be harmful. For example, people usually like being hugged, so they hug their dogs. But very few dogs enjoy that. Or being pet certain places, or startled in an area they usually feel comfortable, etc. There's a lot that can set a dog off and if you don't know what you did wrong, that can kind of hurt. People love their dogs and want the best for them but sometimes there's a communication breakdown, where it takes a dog growling or even biting someone before that person even realizes there was a problem. Most of the time the best thing a dog owner can do is just pay attention. What's making a dog uncomfortable? Why? And what can you do to change that? Just from the little I've seen of him and my experience with other dogs with maybe similar problems, approaching Swift more slowly, avoiding eye contact until you can tell he has relaxed, and getting down to his level are all options that might set up a pattern where he feels more comfortable around everybody.

    • I think it depends on the dog and circumstances, and isnt as black and white as everyone flocks to make it. I think for a new pup positive training could be could for a time, but there should be boundaries made, even if something as minor as a squirt bottle. The bigger issue is when owners aren't consistent with their +/- reinforcements, or their expectations, as that does confuse the dog as to the proper reactions. I think the streamer house adds to the inconsistency in environment and interactions(everyone in the house should be holding the same expectations). I'm posting a longer explanation below to explain my viewpoint and perspective, as a rescue owner who, up until last year, might have agreed with your statement. I understand the frustration/hate with dog collars (many are shit and not helping/used properly), but can't help but advocate for them due to the immense success we've had turning our dog's behaviors around. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Me and my partner got a rescue last year that we didn't realize the extent of his issues, which were many. Caused my partner to cry and bit us multiple times for inocuous reasons when we first got him (still a scar on my wrist from his bite). So we took him to courses, expensive ones, tried "Positive" training for 2 months (I think was good for general trust issues), but he still persisted to have issues, and we had no incentive to tell him it was a bad idea and that there were consequences. Took him to another trainer, very stern but works with rehabilitating rescues on a daily bases and put the onus on us as the owners to not let him get away with aggressive/bad behavoir that could, if unchecked, lead him to be put down for biting another dog or person. We started with a squirt bottle and coins/shakers, but that only helped adjust minor issues, and there were situations where his state of mind was disassociated from reality/listening and fixated on reactionary defensive aggression. Eventually our trainer advised us to get a dog e-collar, we were hesitant but our options for correcting his behavior was limited. It has 126 levels, not like 1-12 like most, so there's more we can do to dial it in to a necessary output for any given situation. We tested it on ourselves at 8, which is like a poke to us, but dogs have much thicker skins, and depending on their mindset they could literally not even notice it. Anyways I'm rambling, long story short, we've been training his response to our voices and being consistent in commands and our expectations, and he's a full 180 degree difference from the dog we initially got (still cuddles and loves us very much, but knows how to think and act for himself). We've learned that people like to project human aspects to dogs in physiology or psychology, and often this can foster bad behavior/responses, but through consistency in positive and negative reinforcement can help save their lives, and sometimes others.

    • Positive reinforcement is great. But positive only will not help you address behavioral issues. You need a balanced approach to really clarify to a dog what is acceptable and what isnt. Your dog is looking to you for strong leadership. Not just positive affirmation.

  • I’ve watched a dog trainer on here for a long while, and the one thing she says is a negative punishment with a negative action does not work for training. She recommends a clicker and dog treats (a small bit of their food also works if they believe it’s a treat). So if the dog stops for a second the (unwanted) action you click it to make a sound and give the dog a treat immediately. I recommend googling this more. It’s overall better for your dogs mental health as well. ❤️

  • The top Amazon Review for that orange collar is titled "Amazing (SAFE) Collar", and is a 5-star review. In it, despite the title saying it's safe, they state that they've never shocked their dog with it and only used vibration mode. They tried the lowest shock on themself and determined no one should ever use the shock setting on it. "(SAFE)" "5 Stars", just ignore an entire mode of the product you spent $30 on. Also chatters saying "the fear is important" or "the dog will stop barking", either use emotes to denote sarcasm, or never get a pet because you're too cold for that. Sure, the goal can be achieved, but changing a pet's behavior with fear isn't POGGERS, it's pretty DansGame honestly. You don't want your own pet to be afraid of you just so you can get it to shut up, that's some monkaS pet ownership.

It goes away if you use the 3 prong charger, but if you only have a 2 prong one, try flipping the way you plug the charger in, one way will give you much less shock.

  • I hate to admit this, but we had a pitbull boxer mix that was a handful to say the least, she was basically a fully grown BIG dog that still thought she was a puppy and acted as such. So in the early days after we adopted her my parents decided that they would give a shock collar a try to see if we could get her destructive behavior under control. The collar had a weak and strong vibrate function and then it had an adjustable shock function. So for the bulk of the time we had her wearing it (about 3 weeks) we only used the vibrate function. One day I can't remember what she did but I'm sure it had to do with her eating something she shouldn't have as per usual, my parents couldn't get her to stop using the vibrate so they went nuclear and activated the shock function. The scream and whimpering she let out was enough to make my big, tough, stoic father take the shock collar off of her and never put it on her again.
