STOP installing batteries in lofts..... The PAS 63100:2024 for both installers and consumers brings some clear instruction and intent. But what does it mean?
Electrical installations protection against fire of battery energy storage systems for use in dwellings specification!
A PAS is a publicly available specification.
Sadly much of the debate around this was disrupted through comparison to electric vehicles, scooters and bikes. Which use very different battery chemistry, BMS, use, connection and loads of other things. However the core issue around stored energy remains.
I see lots of this as common sense but does make things more challenging for lots of housing stock which will be a challenge for both consumers and installers.
I have had the below clarification on the specific point of ICE vehicles in proximity to battery storage systems and it makes sense to me. However as installers we will be treating them in the same way as other stored fuels within our business.
“ I can't provide an official interpretation, but:
(a) Vehicles (with or without fuel tanks) are not mentioned in 6.5.5 h) of PAS 63100.
(b) Table 5 of PAS 63100 further implies that batteries may be installed adjacent to indoor or outdoor parking spaces, but that mechanical protection is required (for the battery enclosure, not the vehicle).
I would still advise checking whether the insurer has specific requirements, though, in this regard, because of their recommendations for EV charging”

I hope this is of some use to installers and consumers.
