This is a REVIEW of the Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR S Lens. This is literally the only choice you have right now for a longer Zoom Nikon Z lens. This lens is ideal for outdoor photos of Birds, Sports, Landscapes, and more. Keep in mind it's a little short when it comes to getting wildlife photos and a 100-500 one day might be a better option.

    • Yeah when I compared the price with a new x-t4 and the Fuji 100-400 I went with that combo for now. 100-400 on full frame is a bit short for my needs, especially at that price. 200-600 will probably be a different story. The Fuji is great but low light performance has nothing on my Z6.

  • If I was on the Nikon Z system, I would snag this lens. I have the Sony 100-400 and it is one of my most used lenses. I weighed the differences with the 200-600, and it is just a bit too specialized - the sheer size of the thing makes it both less portable and more obvious to use when discretion is necessary, and its much longer minimum focus distance means it's really only good for outdoor work. By contrast, the 100-400 can be discretely carried in a small backpack or shoulder bag, and even at full reach it's not obtrusive if you leave the hood off. Friends of mine who have both zooms have said that the 200-600 just doesn't get pulled out as often - when you do need it, it is a great lens, but very often that 100-400 is just a more practical tool.

    • @@steven871 The Sony 200-600 is a fantastic lens for outdoor work if you have a good working distance to your subject. It has a 9ft (3m) minimum focus distance, though, and you need to be at a distance to justify the 200mm framing (my friend who has both has said that often he's just too close to the action with what he shoots, and pulls the 100-400 more often). Its autofocus is superb though. The 100-400GM is a very flexible focal range, and its autofocus was developed specifically for use with the A9 - it will absolutely keep up with high frame rate shooting. What I especially like about it is that it has only a 3ft (1m) minimum focus distance, so even with lots of action you don't have to worry about people getting too close for tracking. The lens is one of Sony's best. Really it will depend on what you're shooting though, and at what distance, to settle which would be more practical for you.

  • Wow! I’m gonna steal that. I think that is the most simplest way to explain lens aperture as it relates to field of view and depth of field. It gets smaller and smaller for the "in focus" subject the smaller you get with the F-stop. But of course it will (simply) blur the background more the lower you can go. 👍

As expected i got the results ,Im using it on my z611. Now the 180 - 600 is here , do i go for a trade in with the 100-400, or get a TC 1.4 for that lense to keep the weight down from the sigma with the ftc mount, or go for the 180-600, around the same weight against the sigma to get the reach with hopefully ,sharper images . I do a lot of aircraft & Bird photogaraphy as a hobbie .What are your thoughts , thanks Steve.

  • I have had the opportunity to test the 100-400mm with the Z6ii for a few weeks now, shooting mostly 'stationery' birds and wildlife (which includes stationery insects and those in motion, such as bumblebees), with and without the TCs (both TC1.4 and TC2). Prior to this, I used the Z6ii with the 200-500mm (with TC1.4 and FTZ) for wildlife photography, which is rather heavy and longer than the 100-400+Z6ii combi. I think the 100-400mm (with or without TCs) is superb for insects, where it allows you to zoom in real close (not as close as macrophotography) without having to be too close where you will disturb them and they simply fly away (ie this will make a superb lens for butterfly and bee lovers). For birds, the overall image quality really depends on how near they are (the sharpness is there but the image starts to look more flat as the subject is further away) and using with or w/o the TCs, but generally the images has been good IMO (though the bokeh by the 200-500mm still looks better, understandly, when the bird is at a distance, as compared to the 100-400 with TC2). Without the TCs, birds are a little difficult, but with primates and larger animals, this lens is perfect! At the end of the day, I guess that, as long as you know the limits of the 100-400 with or without the TCs, you will enjoy it (even though the Z100-400 costs about twice the price of the 200-500mm in Singapore). Thanks for the wonderful video on the 100-400 though!

  • 17:31 Speaking of reach, while not asking for a higher price tag bc of f2.8-4 apertures -- this is where Nikon could step away again in their lens manufacturing & give us a more versatile lens (as they did with the 24-120/4 & the newest 28-75): They could take a note from Tamron/Sigma & instead of the Z 200-600, give us a 150-600/5-6.3 & that'd be game-changing for them. That extra reach on BOTH ends, despite the 6.3, is the main reason I got the Tamron 150-600 G2 over the native Nikkor 200-500/5.6 for my F-mount.

That while there's a big chance Sony will update their design soon... Still love my Nikon gear, but i would love a faster pace from the company.

    • I'm using the F-mount 200-500 F5.6 for all my outdoor sports photography (mostly baseball) and it's been rock solid. On the Z6 with the FTZ adapter it's pretty heavy so I'm using a monopod frequently but it's managable hand-held for short periods. I would LOVE to see a Z-mount equivalent as the 400mm of the 100-400 just doesn't seem like it has enough reach for me. The rest of the time I use the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 Sport lens with the FTZ adapter and I've been very happy with it as well - I got it for $1100 on sale at BH Photo a year of so ago, as I just couldn't bring myself to drop $2600 to buy the Z mount 70-200.

    • @@Chrsly the 200-500mm had been my favorite for bird photography, albeit even on the D500 it was slow to focus; on the Z9, it has really been the limiting factor as it hunts a lot and for BIF, hunting means losing. So, I just got my 100-400mm today, we will see what it can do on the Z9 for BIF; all the reviews say it should perform well.

  • I think it's too expensive, but had I not already bought the 70-200 f2.8, I'd think about it. What about adding the 2X TC for Z mount to my lens, how would that compare? It'd give me f5.6 from 140-400mm, so it would be close in range, but I would expect the image quality to suffer, but not worth getting the 2X TC versus the full on 100-400 Z lens. What do you think, Jared? Adding a Z 2X TC would probably fit your (and mine) budget better, right? Quality of image is the issue, though. Again, what's your thoughts about that? Thanks, -Mike.

    • Long story short. If you use/need the long end often. Its always better to get a dedicate lens for it. If you only use it once awhile. Then the tele-coverter will do it. Yes image degration. I must say personally, I am ready to buy the 100 - 400 Z now, but am having some 2nd thoughts about buying the Z 70 - 200 S 2.8, adding a 1.4 TC. I am thinking in the shooting that I do, city, people (not studio), walk around, landscape, the 70 - 200, esp in lower light would be a good option. Maybe get the 200 - 600 later.

I won't tell anybody. :) Great video, Jared. I like that you looked at the competition from Canon and Sony. I think the Sony is the best lens for birding where you need all the focal length you can get. The Canon is the best all-around and the Nikon might be the best for sports just judging focal length and aperture differences here. With my 100-500, I can photograph college softball from a front-row seat and still get wide enough to photograph the batter. 200-600, not so much. Still, I'd rather have that extra reach for birding where, to me, the 400mm Nikon is just not enough. Nikon has a 200-600 on their roadmap, maybe it will be out by 2035. LOL Have a great week.

    • If someone needs to wait 2h in a photo hide tripod mounting becomes super important unless you want a serious workout while you wait 😬. Secondly that foot provides some form of protection to the lens when you take it low to the floor. Taking of the foot also leaves behind a hole that could collect grim and dust from extensive outdoor usage given the fact most people try to go low to the ground to get eye level with the subject. It would be nice to find an after market seal to protect that opening if the foot was taken off.
