Battle Stations: Spitfire Squadron (War History Documentary)
The inside story of the role of revolutionary fighter plane the Spitfire, with archive film, colour re-enactments and a first-hand account from Battle of Britain pilot Bob Doe
I've had the privilege of siting in a Spitfire and it is just the most beautiful plane I've ever seen.
Rest in peace Fighters. You did your job well. A sincere thank you from Loganville Georgia.U.S.A
Imagine being so sick with cancer and yet knowing you had a fighter plane design you knew your nation needed. Mitchell is a true hero for bringing the Spitfire to life.
i lived through WW2 and I really get tired of some folks who argue about this aircraft and that aircraft being better, these were great and the pilots fantastic. We who survived with never forget them
talboters44 if you lived through ww2 you would be 90 something years old how do you know about youtube
21:42, bullshit! No British man would knock over a cup of tea like that :(
great episode of a great series thank you so much from a lover of history
It was Mutt Summers not Quill who made the first flight, with the famous words “don’t touch anything”, the Spit was perfect
Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster where the best and best Looking British Planes!
And the Mosquito
And Beaufighter, Halifax and Tempest.
For sure. Geoffery DeHavilland was a genius in my book and many others.
wonderful documentary. I've never been in a war and don't ever want to be in one. these brave and skilled pilots prevented the Nazis from invading great britain. i don't care what anyone says the english WON the battle of britain.
not to be salty but... many historians (even some pilots that fought at the battle of Britain) said that the battle of Britain wasnt won by anyone it just stopped
Thats fair point of view, i think both sides had ran out of steam by that point.
:D
And the Scots; Welsh; Irish; Poles; Czechs; French; Belgianand even an Israeli pilot I once read.
there could be no Israeli pilot as Israel was not a nation till 1948.
The ket phrase I've heard from interview after interview of fighter pilots (that lived, obviously) is "You become part of the plane."
Firstly, this is a doc about the Spitfire not Hurricane although its contribution to the Battle of Britain should not be ignored. Secondly, if anyone bothers to read the RAFs own stats they will see that the Spitfires kill ratio was much higher than the Hurricane. Wherever possible it was the Spitfire that gave top cover against enemy fighters, there was a reason for this. Nobody that I know of who has an interest in WW2 ignores the Hurricane but it was all but obsolete by '42 though given extended life as a ground attack. Over Malta the Hurricane fared well against the Italians but struggled against the new Bf109F. Sure! All hail to the Hurricane but, as with every story, there is usually more to it.
5:20 Mitchell didn't create the wing shape at all. That was a Canadian named Beverley Shenstone, who obtained the early design research from Germany of all places. Mitchell was the lead designer, but he didn't design much himself.
Do we have an expert who can explain in detail the "universal wing" with cannon mountings and when it was introduced?
The poor Hurricane, if the Spitfire and hurricane were guys at a party the Spitfire would flex its elliptical wings, majestically flaunt its bubble canopy and pick up a crowd of girls, leaving the Hurricane to do all the tidying up and hoovering whilst grumbling about its hunchback. In fairness the Hurricane was far easier to repair, cheaper to make and a far better gunnery platform and did the lions share of the work.
It was a guy by the name of Smith who was responsible for the wings due to Mitchell’s ill health
The Spitfire is still the most beautiful prop fighter but it was complex and expensive to make, the guys that flew them loved them, the Hurricane was not quite as good but it was half the price and could be built in half the time. That's why there were 3 or 4 times as many Hurricanes than Spits, thank God as if Britain had relied only on Spits they would have lost the Battle of Britain, they could not build the Spits fast enough. I must give credit to the P51 Mustang also a beautiful plane plus out-performed the Spit & it had the long range capabilities to go all the way to Germany and back, It was the Cadillac of fighters
+SuperStig23 - Correction- there were roughly 2 Hurricanes to every Spitfire in the Battle of Britain, not 3 or 4 to one.
Reading some of the comments below shows how stupid some people are. This is about the Spitfire so why should they mention the Hurricane or USA. Should a documentary about the Fw 190 mention the Bf 109 or the Italians?
It doesn't matter which was the best plane or the fastest, put a new pilot in the best plane and the chances are he would be shot down. The aircraft only does what the pilot tells it to do. It was the pilots who made the difference and it doesn't matter if they british, american or whatever. There is a lot of anger here between the English and the Americans and that anger is generated by people who were not even born in 1940. America didn't win the second world war, neither did the britsh. It was a team effort from many nations that defeated the Nazi's. People from many nations died to protect the world from Hitler, honour their sacrifice and stop this pathetic bickering
uhh well working in a current air force we still bicker over what's better your point is perfectly valid but I think its a brotherly bicker we know its a team effort but still like trying to win the pissing contest
A woodern-plane / biplane / a fixed leg fighter, with a veteran doesn't work. The spitfire was much better than any other "dog-fighter" at the time.
I am in complete agreement with you.
the spit was actualy the worst dogfighter. at the start of the battle of britian the RAF had 11 squadrons. 2 were spits 2 were a mix of gladitors, defients and fury's. the rest hurricanes. But RAF losses were 80% spitfires. At the start spits were used against the ME 109 the rest went after the bombers. But after a few days the spits got put on bomber chasing and the hurricanes went for the ME 109 cause the spit just could not dogfight at all. The engine cut out if it tried to turn to much. The blame was put on the carberetor but thats not true cause the hurricane used the same engineand carbs but that never had probs turning.
What's Your favorite WW2 Fighter Plane?
The spitfire is a fighter
It is not ME 109 it is BF 109
Yiannis Mantheakis both work it’s official designation was meschersmitt me 109 but bf109 was it’s other name
The Mosquito fighter/bomber is not mentioned even once, however aside from these fighter squadrons, no other British airplane in WWII had more impact on b ring the fight to the Nazis.
+pepe cohetes What about The Hurricane??? The Mosquito was an excellent multi-role aircraft, but the Hurricane was the one that held off the Luftwaffe. The Mosquito was not even available in any numbers until 1941.
maaan the hurricane gets no love and did more than the spitfire
Babbz, just recall this; The Hurricane downed 11000+ enemy aircraft. It owns the most kills, ever, period,
yea i know it did, thats why i said its under appreciated and needs love. its an awesome and important air frame. the tank buster version was important in the desert
the mark of the fact that it burned the faces of countless pilots due to the fuel tank position in the aircraft is a major reason the hurricane isn't praised as much as the spitfire, the majority of pilots saw the hurricane like marmite they either love it or hate it, however in terms of the spitfire the majority of pilots just loved it hands down no questions asked. The Glory as a fighter pilot is in shooting down enemy fighters the job of the Spitfire, the Hurricanes job was to shoot down the bombers.
Alex Aylward gf
ERIC BRAMMER It was my understanding that the Hurricanes attacked the bombers & the Spitfire dedicated to take on the fighters. The Hurricane was not as fast as the Spitfire and not as well made and less able to take on the fighters & this makes sense.
It is Asimov
33:27 To me it sounds like the British only won the Battle of Britain because of the Blitz.
To me it looks like the Blitz happened because the Luftwaffe lost the Battle of Britain
Spitfire was slow, underpowered, and under armoured. Only superior pilots made the difference.
+Mabel Knott - Sure.... One of the best planes in the war. It was a fantastic aircraft. What do you consider to be better, pray tell?
Neville Chamberlain, Britain's PM 1937-40 was quite the Hitler supporter too.
he wasn't a hitler supporter he was just a pussy without the balls to make the decisions that needed to be made
He wanted to avoid war
yes i know but the war was inevitable you don't resign your post as prime minster in the time of war if you felt you were a competent leader
He did put the army on standby natter the first agreement with hitler
yes but he needed to do a lot more than that ahaa
theysrole the design from junkers, gotha and arado, german planes were given to the brits after ww1 they were single wing, under carriage sleek,
+Kita Barbie rubbish Rubbish I hate these folks who personnally knew nothing of WW2 I lived thru it. I saw what went on and also better German pilots afterwards.
+talboters44 those Nazis airmen praised the Brit pilots
If so, well done
Excellent video but did you notice not once did they ever mention the Americans and without the supplies they were receiving from their Allies England would have lost the war. Churchill begged Roosevelt to enter the war but Roosevelt what was going on in Europe was European problem
The video is about the Spitfire's role in the battle of Britain.
hilarious propaganda
fookdatchit how it stated that it was the me109 scared the shit out of Britain and forced them to make the spitfire also are documentary’s are going to be biased
hilarious propaganda
